San Andreas, IV and V. All three terrible games that focused too much on trying to marry gravitas and the satirical bent of the previous games and all failed. Niko Bellic's tragic story deserved better than the terrible attempts at humor in IV and going bowling with his stupid cousin every couple of minutes.

I pray to not see such dystopian fantasies turn into a reality, cyberpunk was different, I honestly believe the anime kinda saved the game from going extinct while the devs fixed the bug, and it was something too ambitious and different from everything cdpr did before, GTA 6? c'mon they've done it once in 2001 then did it back to back 3 more times in between each time doing something revolutionary and ground breaking and then finally they did it once in 2013,
    2013-2001=12=2025-2013

The hype around the game is already bigger than whatever cp2077 or silk song had, this is the greatest franchise in video games (apart from Nintendo IPs) this has to work, Rockstar games have currently ruined their reputation by suing modders and the defecative editions, this is the only thing that'll save em so if they mess up, they'll reputation will go poof, but I'm hopeful they'll change things, I myself have been trying to save up for a PS5 so I can play the game on launch day

I agree with this move.  Consider that if you own an Apple computer you need to have an Apple phone or tablet to recover your password.  They act like a monopoly over those who buy into their ecosystem at all.   Then they use their influence to monopolize key applications in various areas.

For example.  For the longest time there was an app called forflight which pilots would use and it ONLY ran on iPad.  WHY?   Then there is the way Apple more or less ran every other company that tried to forward a new and in some ways better OS out of business.   If it wasn't for Samsung would Android still have decent hardware OR would it basically be a feature phone OS?

Can't agree more Choom.  We know what happens when the corpos decide they want the game out too early.   A great futuristic game that probably should have three expansions, flying motorbikes and cars, and some kind of online play ... gets shafted.  (Imagine PVP net running, heist against various companies, or death match modes with all that cyberware).     Meanwhile a game, set in the current year, that should not have flying cars and motorbikes lives online so long that it gets them.

I think we are in a sort of gaming doldrums because that game didn't pan out, as well as other games that have been disappointing.

The game industry needs a big flagship like GTA 6 to be on time and to run well on the hardware it releases on.  GTA sells gaming hardware that the next software will run on.  Companies in the industry would be smart to do what Nvidia eventually did with CDPR.  Work closely with the game DEV to be certain your flagship game works well on the available hardware.  If GTA6 is another Cyberpunk 2077 in terms of bugs on release then gaming as we know it is over for 10 years.

Imagine gaming where all the games are just mobile games, or ports of mobile games.  GTA6 fails and that may be where we end up.

Or, think of it from another perspective. Having alternative app stores doesn't affect you in any way. You aren't forced to use it. You can still use you Apple branded stuff. Same with peripherals, I don't think there has been active call to make those work with other devices. Playstation brand peripherals don't work with Xbox either, and I don't see much crying over that. So I think you are confusing it there to lessen proprietary charging solutions. As in Apple being forced to make their products USB-C compatible. Which they already could do before that ruling, but decided not to. Their defense was cost effectiveness, to them as business and to customers who already have their chargers. But that defense kinda falls flat when they stop supplying chargers with devices and ask VERY high price for those chargers bought separately. So someone already in the ecosystem might benefit, but those coming in would have high entry in terms of fees.

So Apple being asked to be more consumer friendly does not lessen your experience, but might enrich others. Which means, this kind of ideology is indeed "walled garden", but not in the way you see it. But as "we don't want those who aren't elite" way. Such gatekeeping is stupid imo. It wasn't the ideology Apple was founded by Steve's, its ideology of new generation of Apple bosses.

If you think through things that Linus for example asks of Apple:
Include chargers. If you insist of having proprietary connectors, this is must. If you agree of using USB-C, then you can skip. Have USB-C. Goes with above. They already can do it, but choose not to in order to generate more profits. There's no other valid reason. Touchscreen on Macbooks. This is ancient style of thinking used devices. And also, Apple wants more profits. They want to their users to have one of each. Phone, tablet and PC. Not giving all features that they could to those, forcing consumer to get the next or previous step to do something basic. Whereas they could take some professions by storm. Like adding convertible Macbook with touchscreen to semi-professional or freelancers working with photo/video field. Repairability. Apple is actively blocking 3rd party repairs. Their reasoning has been privacy and making sure products are within spec. This works as long as device has warranty. But after that, Apple can deny repairs as in their eyes, devices is EOL. Whereas 3rd party repair shops can keep them running for years on years. This essentially would lessen the profits for Apple. As the people who otherwise would need to buy new devices can go for repairs instead. Here I have real-life story. A person I know had to buy new iPhone after previous broke. I don't know what happened to it or whether it was under warranty or not. Repairs would have costed more than getting new device, when the repairs were done by licensed shop. Easier/cheaper upgrades. So this is addition to above, but mainly when it comes to Macbooks and Mac Pro's. The first config is already on high side in terms of pricing of some products. For example, storage and RAM are priced WAY beyond free markets and even competition (consoles and Dell/HP/Lenovo). Again, why is that? Some of that high price can be attributed to quality control. Apple wants to make sure these parts will work. But at some point, that just isn't going to be OK as reason. The high pricing has two other reasons. One, because they can. And two, because you have to do it in shop, you can't do it yourself. So they control things and you as consumer are at their mercy.  Cooling. This is mostly about Mac Pro which is constantly noted to be really bad with cooling. Sinister side of me thinks its to bring in more repair and spares money to Apple. Since you can't improve things on your own, and having things run hot will shorten their lifespan. The luxury effect. This comes from cleaning cloths, unremovable cables etc. Which even Jonathan Horst, a Mac guy inside LMG, has given Apple note about. But its luxury decision. You want to show you have money? You buy expensive stuff just because its expensive, not because it would be better for something. I would bet that cleaning cloth I get with my Boss glasses for free works as well as something you have to BUY SEPARATELY from Apple. Those are just things I remember from LTT videos. Additionally, my gripe is that Apple wants to be included with the world, but doesn't want to do anything about it. So when the rest of the world is going for open-source in files and handling connectivity, Apple does their own thing. Meaning that when Apple user needs to interact with rest of the world, they expect others to bend to please their quirks. As in HEIC image format, non-compatible document formats, even PDF files that doesn't display correctly on Windows machines vs Apple.

Uttamattamakin reacted to Not_A_Spider in Microsoft is removing the ability for Windows 11 to run Android apps
    Summary
On March 5th, 2025, the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) will be depreciated. The feature allowed for installation and running of Android apps from the Amazon app store, which itself was downloadable from the Microsoft store. Some users did figure out how to install the Google Play Store into the WSA system, it's unknown if this will still function, but it was already a clunky workaround to begin with. Supposedly it's being removed because not enough people use it. Those who have apps downloaded will be able to continue to use them past March 5th, but without developer or Microsoft support.

I'm almost positive this feature was only added as a response to Apple silicon being able to run iOS apps natively on macOS, but apparently nobody really cares. Makes me wonder how many people use that feature on Mac.
Ars Technica notes that most of the Android apps 'worth downloading' are just mobile versions of web UIs, ala Netflix etc, and I'm inclined to agree. The only thing I can see anyone use this for is mobile only games.

SUCCESS SUCCESS.  I would call this what a Successful test at this stage looks like.  It got to space and most of the way back.  What Artemis needs is for Starship to do TWO things.  They need to demonstrate FULLY SUCCESSFUL REENTRY and landing for both a tanker version AND a human rated version.  Starship HLS is not meant to ever come back to Earth but landing on Earth will not be harder to land on that the moon since Starship needs a flat place to land.  On Earth we can make that happen.

What I am hoping starship HLS will turn out to be is not a Starship as we've seen it but an item made for space... made to go up and stay up and transfer people to and from the Moons surface  I doubt we'll be seeing a Flash Gordon pulp sci fi looking rocket on the Moon.  The streamlined shape and casing just aren't required in space.

Even Thunderf00t had to give it to him.

The pez door didn't seem to properly close [I'm wondering if that's the reason they decided to skip the engine relight...or maybe they decided against it after what happened to the booster].

Nice to see the boostback for the booster work correctly (I think you could see the starship in a few of the booster camera views as things happened).  It's unfortunate they didn't have a softer water landing, I'm wondering if there was some type of issue with their software design for the return (after all they never really would have been able to properly test it).  The reason I'm guessing this is that you have the one gimble engine light, but you had 2 other non gimble engines light [right around the time they experienced the instability].  So I'm wondering if either they had initial issues lighting and what we witnessed was the software trying to compensate by firing 2 other engines or if maybe the return burn had instructed the wrong engines to light.

Booster seems like they might be able to fix it though, if it was an issue about too little fuel remaining they could change up the flight a bit.  I'm thinking that maybe they were intending to do the relight a bit earlier in the decent because the grid fins I don't think were meant to handle keeping it stable at those speeds in full atmosphere.

One thing, iirc this boosters grid fins actually went back to close to the original design [not that it would make any difference]

That plasma was so cool to watch.  With how the camera began overheating or whatever it was was interesting to see as well (with the feed going on).  I'm wondering if they didn't have quite as much control as they hoped for with the flaps (it seemed to not be keeping the ship in correct orientation).

Although if the Pez doors didn't close, I wonder if that would have caused the issue.  From my understanding they have to form a partial seal in order to partially repressurize the cargo bay to maintain structural stability.  If it failed to close it might have met it's fait by folding itself during re-entry. [All speculations at this time].

Lots of what looked like foam as well when it started entry, so I'm wondering what sections those came from.

Overall a good flight, if the propellant transfer was successful they actually will have passed the NASA milestone (which means it's worth $53 million).

So here are my official guesses from watching it once, booster failed to preserve enough fuel for engine relights/didn't plan for the forces that quickly where they will do a second decent burn in the future to reduce the forces [or some way to reduce the velocity before hitting cloud height]...I think they might have underestimated the speed it would return.

Upper stage, I think the door not closing correctly might end up being one potential cause since it could snap during re-entry; but I'm on the fence I think they had maneuverability issues which might have caused the issue.

So I'm a little bit behind the live stream but Phase 1 went literally perfectly. Launch was seemingly flawless. Hot staging went perfect. Max Q had no visible issues (The Pez Bay door didn't crumple in half).

The Booster made the boost back burn, everything looked good for the first part. The second burn did seem to have some issues right before Ocean splash down. I'm not sure what exactly what supposed to happen, but according to the data from the stream, it hit the ocean at something like 1100 km/h, and the relight didn't seem to happen properly. This might have been a telemetry issue or it might have been an actual issue. Either way, this is still a huge success, and none of these issues will affect Artemis.

The Starship itself made orbit, and I'm waiting to see how the re-entry goes. Skipping ahead in the live stream - they're waiting for signal with the Starship. There might be some issue with the re-light of the raptors, as it seems like they skipped a burn in orbit. But now the Starship is maneuvering for de-orbit.

Damn - the camera feed of the de-orbit is insane. You can see the plasma form in HD. The maneuver doesn't look like it's going properly but I'm going to wait until there's a debrief before I comment on what I'm seeing. It's crazy how the signal is holding strong throughout the re-entry. Looks like they've stabilized. So far so good. Video keeps cutting out but that's expected.

Starship was officially lost during re-entry but that was also expected.

IFT-3 is likely to be Thursday if the FAA grants the license on time; the explosives are already installed and full WDR has been completed (they greatly decreased the propellant load times)

    https://www.spacex.com/launches/mission/?missionId=starship-flight-3
The sub-orbital trajectory has changed in order to accommodate the tests they wish to conduct in space.  It seems like this time they have a large confidence that they will achieve sub-orbital numbers; as the amount that they have put into the Starship upper stage is quite a bit more than has been seen in the past [along with the change in trajectory]

The biggest thing with the trajectory change is likely due to relighting an engine in space.  While it's not mentioned, the trajectory gives a larger window in case things go wrong on the relight [like if it fails it will come down over the ocean still].  One speculation as well is that the fuel transfer they do could also show that an engine can be relight from the transferred fuel...but maybe not.

One thing to note, the payload doors are not welded shut this time, which could be a potential for excitement on lift-off/stage separation/max-q.  The reason being that it's speculated the doors were welded shut on IFT-2 because they were working out the structural supports needed to not crush the starship.  So if there is to be a failure pre-engine cut off I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up being a cause....so yea my guess it would be t+52 seconds where the payload doors will show if they have been sufficiently supported.

It should be noted though, there is a high confidence of it reaching sub-orbital velocity...but there is a really good chance at it breaking apart during re-entry [assuming everything goes right up to that point].  The reason being that the heat-shield tiles iirc are on an earlier mounting mechanism on this version still...but if it survives it (or even if it doesn't) SpaceX will hopefully be able to start gathering data on how hot the stainless steel on the belly gets to [and at what point it fails with how many tiles missing].

It's expected, but as far as I can tell not confirmed that they will just do a bellyflop into the ocean [as opposed to attempting a soft-landing followed by having to blow it up to sink it].  It's most likely though as they don't mention trying to relight the engines for landing.

Space X's Starship had a launch today which did clear the launch pad. The pad did better this time by a lot.  The first stage did explode "Rapid unplanned disassembly" according to Space x.  Second stage was clear and away when it did and seemed to be rocketing along ... until it too appears to have had a rapid unplanned disassembly.  On the bright side parts of it may have reached orbit.

    According to Space X

    My thoughts
This is much better than before but still far from good enough.  If NASA had SLS blow up twice they'd be done for.    Both of those systems have taken a toll on their launch structures.  Super heavy appears to have not even knocked over the cameras and the water deluge appears to have been enough without the flame trench.  Closer examination could change that but at least it wasn't the mass destruction that occurred before.  A real improvement.

All engines stayed lit on superheavy.

Superheavy blew up after hot staging of Starship.    Star ship was clear and away, it appeared to be clear and away by a lot when super heavy did explode.

The above images show the explosion of Starship itself.  In real time Tim Dodd was not smiling like that when it blew up he was looking concerned and confused by the Space X people cheering.  He is due to ride on one of these around the Moon in one of the first missions, a private mission called "Dear Moon".

Congratulations to Space X for doing a little better.  Bear in mind, for comparison.  No Saturn V ever blew up during testing.   No Space shuttle did during testing, sadly two did fail while manned.   In modern times SLS has not blown up once.   Falcon Heavy has not blown up once.  The numbers are small but for this number of launches this number of failures is not good.

To prove it, we swapped our writers' sick gaming rigs full of modern hardware like the latest CPUs and raytracing graphics cards, for something a tad more...quaint. I just read from the slides others gave me. They aren't really learning anything.  AT THE SAME TIME  class is going too fast.  I'm teaching them too much that is not in the book. Along with aspects of the class I don't control (Homework system that does not sync with our LMS) and more senior faculty do.  I can go on...   I've had my own version of reading mean comments for a while.  I was viscerally angry about that and more to the point of wanting to cash my retirement fund out of the market while the cashing is good.
