Thanks for your response I appreciate you answering each of my questions. I did not know the read speed would get increased by raidz2 so that is good to know! I'll probably stick with 2.5 in the meantime, 320MB/s is still significantly better than the current transfer speed to my pi of 10MB/s lol.

RelentlessAF reacted to will0hlep in A Few Questions Regarding a Home NAS Setup
The read speed increases cause the data is striped accross the (non parity) drives. The first bit you want is on drive A, the next is on B, ect... So in the time it take 1 drive to find 1 bit, your 4 drives can find 4 bits. There is some overhead to factor in but that is the basics.

    1) yes
    2) Those HDD will do about 180MB/s (assuming the data is stored sequentually and not randomly), with 6 drives in RAIDZ2 you will get (in an ideal world) 4x the read speed (720MB/s), at which point, I'm not sure there is much need for a cache at all in your use case. I'd just setup the SSD as the boot drive and nothing more.
    3) I wouldn't. I'd just have a good backup policy.
    4) AIO is defo overkill, go air cooling, in fact I'd use a stock cooler if you have one.
    5) Remeber that networking speeds are in bits not bytes and therefore network is often a bottleneck. 10G networking means a transfer rate of 10Gb/s or 1.25GB/s, 2.5G networking only gets you about 320MB/s and 1G networking is only 128MB/s. I went with 2.5G for my NAS cause it's relitively cheap, but it is still easily the main bottleneck in my NAS, however 10G networking seems to be ultra expensive atm. This is also another reason cache dosn't matter.

    Other notes:
I'm a happy TrueNAS user, it's complicated but there are lots of good Youtube tutorials to do basically anything you want.
If you go 2.5G networking using a NIC, go Intel not realtek.

I use my dock the same way you (plugging in all my peripherals), but instead of plugging into my laptop, I have it plugged into my desktop for easier cable management. I've had it for over a year with no issues with it so far, but just based on the on-paper specs alone, I think you have a strong contender here as long as you don't mind it being not as "legit". I had it output to a display with no issues, and my computer recognizes everything I plug in. The only real advantage Anker has over UtechSmart is it's just a bit smaller if you care about how portable it is.

In short, it works as it should.

I'd get a used thinkpad x230. They're relatively light and portable. But if your mom don't care about portability too much, get a thinkpad t440p.

RelentlessAF got a reaction from Edwardk326 in Why does Sony not make monitors?
They don't because of financial issues, most of their ventures into things outside of the PlayStation system have, in recent years, been utter failures. Taking on another product line in a place where it's already over-saturated and dominated by ASUS and BenQ would be a terrible idea and lead to more financial failure for them. They have yet to escape the massive debt they currently inhabit now as it is.

Hey guys, I got my EVGA ACX 980ti a few days ago and went ahead and put it in my gaming PC. I was able to get a great overclock Core Clock is 1568Mhz and Memory Clock is 3808Mhz with a 105% Power limit and +10 on the core voltage. It runs at about 74C under full load for extended periods of time.

I was able to play Fallout 4 Maxed at 1080p with a min frames of about 47 fps when out in the world. Max obviously of 60 since I capped the framerate. In Crysis 3 maxed out I was averaging about 42fps overall. All in all I am very happy with my GPU purchase and won't need an upgrade for quite awhile. If anyone else has this GPU lemme know what overclocks you got and if you are happy with the performance

It died in 2 years cause of VRAM failure, despite the VRAM being manufactured by Samsung. Considering that and no overclocking capabilities, wasn't that awesome ^^

    I've also had a 2GB GTX 660, it crashed even if I OC'd it a tiny bit. Apparently 660's didn't like overclocking
