    1. Where did you get them from? There are lots of different retools, the early ones in 2018 were super smooth, the latter ones are a bit inconsistent, I have some 500 MX1A-11NW Retools from arrow and they're pretty smooth.

Mainly Reddit, read a lot about how buying Blacks nowadays is a gamble as like you said, different manufacture years can results in swayed results.

Your comment about the springs is a bit irrelevant, most people will spring swap (unless it's a gat yellow) Cherry and Zeal springs are very awful. Most people choose to use Sprit (scammer), TX, CWW, Punchy, Kmac or korean springs, which are much much better than stock zeal or cherry springs.

I wanted to use them as stock since that's the way they ship. While I find my particular set scratchy, I have been discussing with others about buying 68g TX springs for the Blacks as I find them far too heavy.

As for my Tealios, I have no intention to replace those springs as  they work fine for now.

I've been using kailh box navy switches for typing, but I've been thinking about building a board with linears as a dedicated gaming keyboard. I've been thinking about getting either the tealios switches or gateron inks. I know you said the inks are a close second to tealios, but what would you say are the differences between the two?

Hi, the main difference between the two is the sound signature. Ink Blacks are very low-pitched compared to the Tealios which have a more classic 'clack'. The deep thock of the Inks is amplified when lubed.

Based on some of your blog entries, I advised a friend of mine who just got some Reds last week to find some keyboard lube. He's come back to me wondering what to get lubewise. Do you have any preferences there?

I personally lube my Reds with Tribosys 3204 as it's relatively thin and won't interefere with travel time on the Reds. Anything thicker may be detrimental to the Reds actuation time.

Recent Gateron batches especially inks have had terrible loose leaves. Gateron leaves in general aren't great but now they're just getting worse.

Interesting. Had heard about Gateron Ink Black leaves being loose recently but didn't occur to me that they would affect Zeal's batches too. $80 of switches to get loose leaves still has my stomach turning.

How would you say it feels compared to a Gateron brown smoothness wise? (Ignoring the panda's obviously better tactility)

I would say Browns are slightly smoother, the material quality of the Purple Panda is atrociously rough. The Brown is the least tactile switch I know and frankly I see it as a Red with a bump, so it's more smooth in that sense.

Considering that they are almost exactly the same color and shade (in that lighting, at least) as St. Ives lotion, it makes a lot of sense that the self-lubing claims hold up! In all seriousness, though, it's nice to hear that a switch out there exists that doesn't have such a harsh bottom-out noise. My question is what kind of travel are you looking at with switches like this, where's the actuation point and how far do they go before you hit deck?

Indeed! Creams feel like typing into lotion. The actuation point is about half-way down just like most other linears, the actuation point isn't noticeably late or early. I don't quite get what you mean in your second question, but I usually like to bottom out so the Creams were light enough that I could comfortably bottom out without the Creams giving me much resistance.

I currently have Cherry MX reds in my keyboard (New one still hasn't arrived) and sometimes I end up holding down keys when my finger kinda relaxes. Do you think a switch with a tactile bump would help with that or, should I look into some heavier springs and swap the ones that will be in my NovelKeys creams?

I had the same issue when I temporarily used Cherry MX Reds in my keyboard, the Reds are just far too light that even just my finger falling asleep actuates them. You could look into heavier springs or even different switches altogether like Gateron Ink Blacks which in my opinion are heavier and smoother than Reds even at stock, but NovelKeys Creams are definitely my recommendation for a stock smooth switch.

  8. Rank 109, I'll take it! Top 110 was my goal all along, I swear. ;) That was super fun, even if the caveat of the competition for me was having to clean out my PC every two days.

It was particularly fun to look at the rankings, the point where @King Poet lost his #1 spot for a few days was a plot twist in itself! Felt like I was watching a series, "Find out if King Poet gets his #1 spot back in the next episode..."
