Kokomo reacted to tikker in Which Speakers or sound bar for Dolby atmos?
Well two speakers give you stereo, and Dolby Atmos needs some form of height channels, so withonly two speakers you're not going to get it. Never personally heard Atmos soundbars, but judging from the videos they may not be too bad, or otherwise Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization seems to be what you're looking for, if your receiver supports that.

On a budget? Because right now is not the right time to get good deals on any game really.

You can't go wrong with The Witcher III but don't buy it until it hits its usual sale price of $11.99 for the base game or $14.99 for the GOTY Edition.

The Witcher III (base game, hundreds of hours of gameplay). Last hit $11.99 in late July to August 1st.

The Witcher III GOTY Edition (includes both DLC expansions for if you plan to invest more hundreds of hours). Last hit $14.99 in late July to August 1st.

As shown above, it will clearly hit these exact prices again very soon. So far in 2019, it's hit these prices in every single month. You're gonna want to treat every single game like this unless you have a money tree in your backyard or a daddy warbucks.

I also highly recommend snagging Half Life 2 when it hits $0.99 really soon and until then grab Estranged Acts I & II on Steam. They're both completely free and imo a couple of the best games for PC gaming in 2019(I kid you not). Especially in 1440p at a locked 144 fps.

It's okay, should get the job done for the price... nothing spectacular, cooler feels a tad cheap and won't be the most silent nor coolest but certainly still better than blower... gotta ask yourself however if you're paying over a thousand dollars on a video card already should you really cheap up another 50 bucks or so?

Kokomo reacted to i_build_nanosuits in My opinions on VR in it's current state, should YOU buy into it?
My Rift S review after using it for about 6 hours tonight...

The screen is MUCH cleaner and sharper than rift CV1 or Vive...also better than samsung odyssey + in terms of clarity...LCD screen look noticeably sharper than pentile oled screens...The lenses are also much improved, no more god rays and much larger sweet spot.

Nice upgrade for racing sims and most games actually...BUT...the tracking doesnt work too well at times in FPS shooter games like onward and pavlov for example...in fact this is a big minus IMHO. A rift with 3 sensors tracked a lot better still. But in most other games it does just as well so long as you don't need to bring your hand next to your face to aim.

Nice build quality, more comfortable headset i tried...very balanced but the very soft foam facial interface they chose makes me sweat and i don't like it...i'll need to upgrade it to something better...it's too soft and swoochy.

80hz feels nice i don't feel any difference from the pervious 90HZ and it turns out it's easier to hold a steady 80FPS than 90FPS so you can still use supersampling and high details and make the images super sharp and detailed...at a higher resolution.

CV1 to Rift S i would say feel like going from a 1080p to a 1440p monitor in a way, but all around you the whole world look sharper and nicer...it's amazing.

it's worth EVERY penny though, especially if you don't already have your VR setup you'll have an absolute blast with this, it's awesome overall...I highly recommend.
If you have a lot more money to spend OR if you have a VIVE VR setup and you'd re-use the base stations you have and maybe the wand controlers for a little while...then i would wait for the Valve index instead BUT here in canada a full kit with stations and controlers will retail for 1300$CAD (999$USD) which is too much for me personally. Rift S is 549$ CAD (399$ US) and they chard 0$ tax and 0$ shipping from oculus store directly, 3 days it was here coming out from Louisville, KY, United States...comes with all you need in the box, long cable on the thing and all.

I recommend Ryzen 5 1600 or core i7-3770 CPU or better.
GTX 1060 6GB or RX 580 8GB or better for GPU
(ideally a 1080 or a 2060, but for simulations and more advanced VR even an overclocked 1080ti is nice to have)

Kokomo reacted to Paul Rudd in Is the Rift s worth it?
If money isn't an issue, just buy whatever VR headset you wish. Just don't expect VR to wow you for more than a few months, if that. The more time you spend in VR, the more time you can feel sick or queasy. Mine has been in brand new condition and stored in its original box since early 2017. At the time, just about every VR game outside of the high dollar games had some sort of issue with it whether it was an experimental game that devs got tired of developing or games that you want to play in VR just don't work in VR. Imo, VR is nothing but a parlor trick. Games are completely overpriced due to devs obviously not getting much money from them.

Quest is a VR console with a very limited set of curated games at the moment and oculus has said they are being very strict with the quality of games released for it.
I'm sure in a year or 2 there will be a decent library of polished games but right now their isn't a large selection.
It does have the benefit of being totally stand alone and wireless.

Rift S is probably the best bang for your buck PC wise, with easy setup like the WMR headsets. The extra cameras on the Rift S should compensate for the poor tracking around the head and behind the back that the Windows headsets are known for.

Unless you want a wireless PC experience, I'd avoid the Vive/Pro at this point.
Their build quality issues with sweat damage are well know and the pro is super overpriced for what it is.
Plus HTC customer support has been horrible since the Vive launched.

The Valve index would be a better bet when it goes on general sale this summer.
Same tracking solution as the Vive, better FOV, higher refresh rate, Same resolution as the Vive Pro, better controllers, but you do need to mount the lighthouses to the walls/poles/light stands so bringing it to another location is a lot more work then a Rift S setup.

Kinda... I got one of the new Rifts for Christmas from work and It was fun to play with and I liked watching movies on it but the games were a kinda meh and most of the free games were fairly similar.  The other issue I had with it is it took up quite a bit of space you almost need an entire room dedicated to playing also the more room you have the better the experience.  But if you buy it and try it for a few days and like it then keep it if no just return it.  There are plenty of free demos and software to try.

    https://www.richersounds.com/hi-fi/turntables/project-essential-3-blk.html
Out of all of these, i would go for the essential 3, its a no thrills turntable just focusing on the sound, the sony and audio technica could be easier to a newbie due to the built in phono preamp. I've listened to both pro-ject turntables and the audio technica one in my local richersounds (plymouth, the guys in there are lovely.) and the audio technica is more convenient, but the project's sound sweeter if you will. for speaker's i would have a look at q acoustics or Tibo.

An alternate title was Getting into the Groove.
This might end up being a long journey, so I will recommend you to get comfortable.
Comb your ironic beard, adjust your tattoo sleaves, put on your favorit playlist of bands no one has heard of, and grap your favorite drink from Starbucks.
    Let's do this shit!

Given the fact that people keep asking about vinyl records on a near weekly basis, I decided (as the least qualified person to frequent this board) to make a general introductory topic about vinyl records and record players.
I hope this will help at least a couple of people before it disappears into the ether in a couple of days, maybe it will create a huge discussion or maybe it will be ignored and forgotten forever. Either one is fine by me.
It also helps to boost my hipster cred, so I guess that's cool.

This topic will be split into four parts
An introduction to records and why you might want to use an almost 150 year old format. An overview of the record player and all the stuff that goes into a player producing sound.  A short guide on how to get the sound from your record player into your ears. Ripping your vinyl onto your computer 1. Records
    2. Turntables
    3. Getting the Sound Out
    4. Ripping Your Records
    5 The end

So, we have both reached the end. I hope this have been helpful. And if it haven't I hope you'll tell me, hopefully, by using all caps.
At least, I hope it has been entertaining.

Turn in next week when I will tell the world of the joys of the 8-track and the glorious world of VHS tape.

If you're gonna look for used gear online, then i can recommend looking up the models on Vinyl Engine. They're a great resource for finding technical information, as well as potential problems, with most turntables.

I will second the flea market/Craigslist/eBay idea. A lot of bargins can be had, especially if you're capable of repairing and replacing parts.

If you're adamant about getting something new, I can recommend the Rega Planar 1. That should fit your budget.
The Fluance RT81 should also fit your price bracket, and it's save you on a pre-amp as well.

well i fixed it for now i think anyway went into task manager and into performance and open resource monitor and looked at the network usage and disabled a couple of things that were using alot of bandwith ( mostly useless windows stuff) and its seemed to fix it.  not sure if it would work for you.

I certainly hope that it will help.

Also try using Cloudflare's DNS afterwards, if everything works properly, you could get down to ~10ms or below latency ( I am currently getting ~8-10ms).

I use OpenWrt on my Netgear DM200, so I checked via the same commands, just through SSH.
Additionally, I had completely replaced the equipment, going the length of using an ISP-branded (true, the provider of our ISP, but same thing when our ISP's provider is the only DSL provider permitted in the country).

I had checked from my laptop (Linux) via WiFi, my laptop via Ethernet, my mother's laptop (Windows 10) via WiFi, directly from the Netgear DM200 via SSH, all of the above, excluding SSH, with both the TP-Link TD-W9970 and the ISP-branded D-Link DSL-6740U.

Vectoring is enabled on our line, due to me explicitly requesting it to be on (the DM200 does not support vectoring by default, however I had installed a xDSL firmware that does support vectoring on it, and both the TD-W9970 and the ISP-branded DSL-6740U support vectoring out of the box (not to mention that there is no custom firmware for them), so that was not the cause.

And from my traceroute logs, I saw there were spikes in latency in multiple (generally 2-3) spots, all of them either on our ISP's servers, their provider's servers, or both.
We use 1.1.1.1, however I had also tested the default DNS server.

    Hey guys!
I found out what the problem is:
I thoroughly inspected the components and it turned out there was a microscopic person barbecueing on the motherboard. He was roasting some sausages as soon as i plugged in the power. I snapped his neck with my finger and threw him out the window.
I just booted the PC again now it works like a charm! Thanks guys

Kokomo reacted to PGRacer in PC smoked on first boot
Something is seriously wrong, I would advise you DO NOT power it up again until you thoroughly inspect it.

PSU should be more than enough to boot the machine perfectly fine, smoke would not be a side effect of a slightly underpowered PSU, and 650W should be perfectly fine for a single GPU system.

First of all, one of your components is probably dead, hopefully just one of them in any case.

Can youy identify where the smoke was coming from? Was it from the CPU itself, or under the CPU or just near it on the motherboard.

Next thing I would do would be to double check all the connectors are in the right place, check for thermal paste or similar on the CPU pins and surrounding motherboard. Check you used the correct risers for the motherboard so it cannot touch the metal case behind it. Check no screws or other 'debris' have caused a short somewhere.
Check no molex installed backwards (yes it can be done, I've seen it).
Basically check everything you have done yourself. If you are very lucky (or unlucky depends how you look at it) it was a faulty motherboard / CPU to begin with and you can RMA it.
