Fnige reacted to StDragon in Windows 11 24H2 goes from “unsupported” to “unbootable” on some older CPUs
Microsoft is actively rewriting portions of the OS code with Rust for security reasons. As i understand it, POPCNT allows for efficient code to be compiled. So, it stands to reason why MS would raise the baseline by making this a hard requirement. It's about time frankly.

Fnige reacted to LAwLz in Alternative app stores will arive on iOS - but there are substantial caveats
I still find it mind blowing that people on this forum will defend the world's richest and most powerful company when they are restricting choise for their consumers and abusing their partners and developers.
This is clearly not following the spirit of the law, and I wouldn't be surprised if the EU will force them do change their approach. On the bright side, they lowered the commissions.
What I really can't wrap my head around is how people can have been fooled into thinking that the chances the EU are proposing would result in chaos and a bad user experience. That's just a massive lie that Apple is trying to push because they don't want to lose potential revenue and lose control over their customers.
If you think everyone will go under then I'd like to direct your attention to MacOS. MacOS is essentially the same as what the EU want iOS to become. Does MacOS have a massive issue with malware, scam apps and such? No it doesn't. What does MacOS allow you to do that iOS doesn't allow you to do? Sideload apps, install third party stores, change your browser, use alternative payment methods in apps, and a bunch of other things.
Isn't it amazing that none of the things Apple are saying will happen on iOS haven't happened on MacOS? It's almost as if these hypothetical threats Apple is trying to convince people are real are unlikely to occur...

I love how it took until the second paragraph before apple's newsroom piece talked about malware

Fnige reacted to manikyath in These beer-drinking Colorado friends designed a controller to make pinball more inclusive
sometimes all it takes for inclusivity to actually happen is;
- someone needs to realise the problem exists
- that someone needs to be willing to spend an afternoon to think about a solution
the unfortunate thing is that
- people very often refuse to realise problems may exist for people other than themselves.
- people often dont get past stating "something should be done about this" before going on about their day.

Fnige reacted to Dracarris in Intel's slapped a 16GB dual-channel minimum entry requirement on Core Ultra laptops
I think anything below quad-channel 256GB memory is unacceptable and absolutely necessary and indispensible for everyone that buys such a machine. I will accept no other use cases. Because the only thing that helps and defines user experience is bigger number more better. Also, they must be regular full-sized DIMMs compatible down to DDR2, the CPU and GPU chip must be socketed, and the machine is not allowed to weigh less than 20kg, be thinner than 10cm and not look horrible. Otherwise, no certification for you.

Fnige reacted to Alex Atkin UK in Intel's slapped a 16GB dual-channel minimum entry requirement on Core Ultra laptops
I'd argue it should be 32GB, but overall its fair to say 16GB dual-channel is a bare minimum.

Fnige reacted to starsmine in Launch event for Core Ultra and 5th Gen Xeon CPUs. 'AI is everywhere' says Intel
My VPN is on by default. So EVERY time I google. I get asked about which squares contain a bike, and I, as a human, do not know if they want me to include the bit of tire that is 10 pixels into another square.
so every single time. I do like 4 in a row, and it goes, NOPE not proven human enough.
At this point I think the captchas are harder for me then a computer.
What counts as part of stairs? the cement under the steps?
Does the person obstructing the seat of a motorcycle count as a motorcycle?
Does the exaust pipe in the bottom right square count as part of the bus when none of the body is in the square?
Ill split tunnel apps that dont like VPNs and I dont care. But default on for everthing else is how I want it to be so I dont to have my ISP getting letters because I turned on my torrent client for 10 seconds once a week and forgot the VPN.

Last I remember, when you usually see this kind of stuff. Its because the performance uplift is more like 10fps -> 75fps. Which is still 750% sure but much less impressive.

Fnige reacted to Drazil100 in Elon Musk is removing blocking people from 𝕏
Summary
Elon Musk said today on 𝕏 that he is removing the ability to block people (aside from DMs) and that you will only be able to mute people.
Quotes
My thoughts
Part of me wonders if ANY good can come of this. On the one hand we are going to see a LOT more spam and harassment. I don't believe muting someone prevents other people from seeing their reactions to your content and there are going to be a LOT of people who were previously blocked from harassment who will suddenly be able to leave garbage quality posts. On the other hand though, maybe this prevents people from blocking out legitimate criticism to hide the fact that they are scummy?
Either way I don't like it. It's not broken so why is he messing with it?
