I'm not understanding this one at all. Liquids of any kind and electronics simply do not mix. Liquid = conductivity, conductivity = electronic component damage.

The idea being that you'd immerse it in distilled water under the assumption that it would get rid of at least some of any dissolved mineral residue left behind by the ordinary water used to hose them down. Like @Sauron said, you would then let the card completely dry before you connected it to any power source (I guess "people would know to let the card dry before connecting it" isn't something that can be taken as read).

  2. Google: You'll watch what we want you to watch and you'll fucking like it.

I actually never subscribe, never view youtube while logged in, use a VPN, have my browser set to clear cookies and site data every time I close it, and close the browser ever time I change websites. So I suppose I get as close to a "vanilla" youtube experience as possible. I've actually found the side bar recos not bad. I'd be curious to know how they choose which ads to push on users like me.

The regular rotary dials you have are pretty universal. Otherwise no , welcome to the world of unpopular proprietary smart home crap lol.

I used to live with friends who had a google smart home thermostat. I could not, for the life of me, figure that damn thing out. You'd think "make house 22 degrees" would be basic functionality, but nnnooooo, you had to set a temperature range, time of day shit. I will never have a smart thermostat. I just fear that, one day, there won't be any choice. Maybe I should start hoarding dumb thermostats for the coming smart-apocalypse?

The only smart thermostat that looks good is the one that's in the garbage bin where it belongs.

^ This. A thousand times. A million times. This!

  4. At that price point, you'd probably be better off using a phone (unless your phone camera is garbage). Smartphones have largely killed off the low-end camera market.

Also, the problem with the 2000D is that it's on the EF mount, which is on it's way out. This is good in that existing lenses will get cheaper (you can probably find some good deals on good bodies and glass) but it means limited growth and no new bodies or lenses.

  5. Took advantage of what seems to be the last vestige of summer before our 8 months of darkness sets in. 101km today in 4 hours 22 minutes. I had my first bear encounter! I've been cycling these here parts for over 20 years, cycled across Canada, cycled through the Yukon and the Northwest Territories, cycled through Banff and Jasper plenty of times, and yet today of all days was the first time I'd ever seen a bear while cycling. It was a small black bear about the size of an English sheepdog. I was enjoying a slight downhill and cruising around 30kmph when I looked to the right and saw the bear looking back at me. I looked behind me and saw it bound across the pathway. Keep in mind, this is within city limits, literally 5km away from my apartment building.

    Total this year: 2,519km

They could just invest in a compressor. Or if they already have one, dial it in properly. For stuff like podcasts you want to heavily compress voice audio and add a brick wall limiter so it evens out the differences. That's how radio has been doing it for decades and they do it for a reason.

It's funny you should mention radio. The morning show on the station I listen to has a very similar problem. The guy has a very low pitched voice, like Luke, which makes it hard to hear him over the ambient noise in the car whereas the girl has a much higher pitched voice, so I have no problem hearing her.

  7. I wasn't terribly sure where to post this, but I watch the WAN Show every week, but not live due to various reason. I'm in an environment where I can't wear headphones and there's some ambient noise. Linus' mic is usually alright because he has a higher pitched voice, so I can usually hear him (though still not 100%). However, because Luke has a much lower voice and I think he speaks at a lower volume, I often have trouble hearing Luke.

I know they monitor the audio, but there's a difference between how it sounds in headphones vs how it sounds on my TV speakers.

I don't want to bitch, but it is very frustrating because I either have Linus' volume fine but can't hear Luke, or crank it up to hear Luke and Linus is too loud. Keep in mind, there's not a lot of ambient noise, but even the slightest just makes it incredibly difficult to hear Luke.

Pfft, next you'll be asking me to believe there are such things as birds.

    You mean "government surveillance drones?"

TBH, I'm of the same mindset as Linus on this one. I don't really care. To me, the only truly disrespectful response would be him laughing about it.

Cycling 100 km daily does sound a bit more off than walking 10.000 steps a day, kinda well depending on how you look at it... but it's not extreme far from doable given car roads like posted and some form of exquisite bike made out of a full carbon frame, electric support, an individual in full shape & all that jazz. I see it happening harder under more regular conditions, though.

TBH, it's all about working your way up to it. I usually start off with 50-80km per-ride in the spring. You also need to know what your pace is. I generally strive for an average speed of around 20kmph. It's basically knowing how much power you can output at a sustained rate over a certain period of time.

  10. So no riding since I got home last Friday. I've got some bad saddle sores (You have failed me, "Spongy Wonder!!!") so I've been taking it easy. But, after doing around 400km and 4000m of vertical throughout Jasper, Banff, and Kootenay National Parks and doing seven mountain passes, I figured I'd earned it and decided to treat myself to a King of the Mountains jersey. My fiance said, "Ugh, that's ugly," when I showed her.

  11. TBH, I don't think there's any way to ask a girl out that's universal. For example, I met my fiance at a Transformers toy convention. I was wearing Norwegian curling pants, had hair down to my shoulders, a massive beard, and I was walking by her at the bar after the show closed for the day and heard her say something like, "I just want to be friends with him." So I just walked right up next to her, looked her square in the eye and said, "So what you're saying is, you're available." Then I disappeared to Iceland for a month and then New Zealand for another three months. We've been together now for 9 years. It could easily have gone very differently with me ending up pepper sprayed and with a black eye.

So I'd just be up front about it, ask away, and if she says "no" then you'll always have the rests of us forever-alone types here on the internet. Don't beat around the bush; be direct so there's no room for misunderstanding (made that mistake way too many times myself)

Hmm. That's something I never considered. I have a cheaper Canon (SL3) and the only aftermarket lens I have is way better than the crappy kit lenses. I have my eyes on a nice Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | S, but that's still more than I can afford right now. I've always liked the way my photos turn out when using Canon bodies (mostly landscape and some nature) but seeing this I think I'll switch to something else when I grow into a full size sensor.

I shot with Canon for 10 years. My first interchangeable lens camera was a Canon 10D. My whole family shot with Canon, though I'm the only one who seems interested in photography these days. It's not that Canon makes bad products; I loved my Canon lenses. But Canon has a history of holding features for ransom, particularly video features (this was the case for a very long time). But I eventually got sick of Canon's bullshit and, for the first time ever, I don't feel limited by my gear and have no need nor desire to upgrade. I have four lenses and only one is first-party. I wouldn't have gone to Sony had it not been for the third-party lenses. I think Canon's going the Apple "walled garden" approach, which I hate to see becoming more commonplace among tech.

  13. Think twice before you buy a Canon RF camera. It looks like Canon is locking out third-parties from making lenses for the RF mount on the grounds of patent infringement.

My thoughts: It's this kind of anti-consumer bullshit that made me jump ship from Canon to Sony back in 2017. I have a range of third-party glass for my A7rIII and I love the options and affordability, which is one of the reasons I recommend Sony (at least for full frame, Fuji is my go-to for APS-C). Now, yes, Canon does have the legal right to do this if they want, but that doesn't make it any less slimy and distasteful. But, much like Apple, they're giving a big "fuck you" to the buying public in the process. So, if you're looking at a Canon RF camera, think about what lenses you want/need before you pull the trigger.
