  1. Budget/Location: US, however much the school board is willing to fund it I guess. Aim: Our school/class wants to buy like 8 Oculus quests, and we also want to build a "server" that lets us stream PC VR games to the quests using Virtual Desktop or whatever. It'll be an idea similar to 7 gamers 1 CPU, except each VM will be able to stream VR games to a designated headset (8 headsets -> 8 VMs, each with their own GPUs, 4 CPU cores, and around 16GB of RAM). I've put together this parts list so far, we'd need 2 of these to be able to stream to 8 headsets at once: PCPartPicker Part List CPU: AMD Threadripper 3960X 3.8 GHz 24-Core Processor ($1399.00 @ Amazon) Motherboard: Gigabyte TRX40 DESIGNARE XL ATX sTRX4 Motherboard ($629.99 @ Amazon) Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 64 GB (8 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($274.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Patriot VPN100 256 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($54.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Samsung 860 QVO 2 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($199.99 @ Amazon) Video Card: ASRock Radeon RX 580 8 GB Phantom Gaming X Video Card ($166.98 @ Newegg) Case: Corsair 750D ATX Full Tower Case ($159.99 @ Newegg) Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 1000 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($179.99 @ B&H) Case Fan: Noctua NF-F12 PWM 54.97 CFM 120 mm Fan ($19.95 @ Amazon) Case Fan: Noctua NF-F12 PWM 54.97 CFM 120 mm Fan ($19.95 @ Amazon) Case Fan: Noctua NF-F12 PWM 54.97 CFM 120 mm Fan ($19.95 @ Amazon) Radiator: Alphacool NexXxoS ST30 Full Copper 240mm Radiator ($55.50 @ ModMyMods) Custom: EKWB EK-XRES 140 SPC PWM Classic RGB (Includes Pump) ($99.99 @ Amazon) Custom: Optimal Shop M.2 NGFF SSD to PCI-e Express 4X Converter Adapter Card - Ethereum Mining ETH Miner Cable rig ($5.99 @ Amazon) Custom: Asus Strix 580 8GB ($169.99) Custom: Sapphire Pulse 580 ($189.99) Custom: XFX 580 ($159.99) Custom: ZOTAC GT710 ($42.99) Custom: USB 3.0 PCIE card ($18.29) Custom: USB 3.0 PCIE card ($18.29) Custom: USB 3.0 PCIE card ($18.29) Custom: USB 3.0 PCIE card ($18.29) Custom: PCIE 1x - 4x multiplier ($29.95) Custom: PCIE 1x riser ($21.95) Custom: EK Velocity CPU Block ($109.99) Custom: UnRAID basic license ($59.00) Total: $4144.26 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-01-29 14:21 EST-0500] Any suggestions on this build? also just gonna ping @LinusTech and @GabenJr because you guys have really relevant experience so I could use your input. Edit: a bit more info about the list I forgot to add. The 1x riser cable is so I can plug the 4x multiplier in (I don't think it would fit under a GPU). The 4 rx580s are each for the VMs and will be plugged into the x16 slots. The m.2 to PCIe adapter is for the GT710 (for the host to have display). The 4x PCIe 1x multiplier is for the USB 3 cards, each VM gets one.
  2. I see the H100i Pro only has a lit up CPU block, and that can be just set to be solid white or off. You could also possibly find an AIO without fans and then just put some non RGB fans on it.
  3. Update so idk how but I fried the mobo (it was a pretty beat up one any way), so it'll be maybe a few weeks until I can afford a new mATX or ITX B75 mobo, I'll probably find one off ebay or something
  4. Alright update, I spent a couple hours putting all the standoffs in and mounting the PSU and motherboard, then I cut a larger hole for rear IO (it isn't pretty lol I used a jigsaw). I installed the components and it boots and can run Minecraft! I don't have a riser cable yet so that'll be what's coming next, I think I've found a spot for it right next to the CPU cooler. I've also gotta find a nice place to put a power button, because shorting the mobo pins every time isn't really a long term solution
  5. I wanted to include a screen, but it's already gonna be a real tight squeeze to get the GPU in so I think I won't.
  6. So today I brought it to school to work on it, I found out where I'm mounting the power supply (and had to pull it out of its case because it was too big) and figured out how to mount this cooler
  7. This thing was insanely easy to pull apart, just 6 screws and the whole thing came out in one piece. There's also already the start of a hole I can use for rear IO
  8. Eh, I'm not opposed to pulling apart one of my old monitors to use for this, and put it in like a laptop screen. Then again, this could also be a bit easier if I don't try to make it like a laptop and instead just a portable pc
  9. What's up, The backstory of this build is my sister impulse bought a phonograph from a Barnes and Noble, and it was really shitty and apparently the brand has a reputation for breaking records. She's gotten a new player and doesn't need this any more, so she gave it to me to mess around with. I've just upgraded pretty much my whole desktop from a i7 3770 to a R5 1600 (AF), and despite the record player sucking, the box looks pretty cool so I want to see if I can build a PC into it, maybe include a monitor in the top too.
  10. Are you certain you have everything plugged in correctly? Does anything at all happen when you press the power button (fans spinning, motherboard lights, the power supply turning on, etc)? If it was a broken CPU, the mobo would power on when pressing the power button, but the system wouldn't post. Same with RAM or in some cases your video card.
  11. and the 3700X is ~$300 compared to ~$400
  12. Looks good! If you want to save a bit you really don't need that CPU cooler because the one that comes with the 3600 is quite decent.
  13. The parts should be fine, they're still inside their safe temperature ranges.
  14. Yes, LGA 1200 edit: for some reason i didnt get notifications that other people had replied with this same thing
  15. It's a decent processor, but you could get a ryzen 7 3700x for less and you'll need to buy a new motherboard and RAM either way.
  16. You will probably have to find the RGB software for the fans to change the color, and plug the RGB connectors into your motherboard/an RGB controller.
  17. dammit my 1600AF is gonna be arriving today but I have work today and tomorrow so I won't be able to put it in my system right away ?

  18. I think an easier way to go about it would to just get a 1U rack shelf (like this) and place your computer in the rack with everything else.
  19. My guess is that not enough mainstream people used it, so companies decided it wasn't worth keeping around. I love mine too, and the fact there aren't any on newer phones makes me hesitant to upgrade from my LG G3. Though there are some IR blasters that plug in the USB-C port.
  20. From what I've heard, grey market keys like that are usually okay, microsoft isn't out there scouring people's PCs to make sure the licenses are right.
  21. the clip at 7:11 in

is actually from Netlinked December 18, 2015 not December 19.

    literally unwatchable/s

  22. I haven't even read all the way through or watched the video but wanna say thanks for making a guide on how to set up your own personal VPN. I've tried tons of times with openVPN but have just never managed to get it to work, so I'm excited to see if this'll work for me.
  23. i wanna stream something in VR tonight but twitter isn't really helping me decide so do i play Boneworks, Half Life 1, or Half Life 2?

  24. Why not upgrade to a 3600? you probably won't have to get a new mobo too.
  25. You already decided but I feel it's worth adding that have an even weaker CPU (I7 3770) and it runs VR nicely too, at least at 90hz.
