My recommendation at this point is to reinstall the games, and wait a few days to see if it happens again. If it does, feel free to send me a message, and we can troubleshoot farther at that point 👍

To be honest, there is no point speculating and getting your mind set on buying one thing. Wait until there are reviews for products before you make up your mind, as always.

Interesting. Have you had anything else go missing from this hard drive? Take a look around at other non-steam programs and files, see if they all open correctly and make sure that personal files are still there. I find it very unlikely that 6 Steam games would be the only thing affected if this was a HDD issue, so I'm leaning towards Steam issue, as @Mel0nMan suggested.

Have you tried downloading the drivers for it yet? You can find the Intel Wifi driver here. If you don't have ethernet available to you, you can download the drivers on another computer and transfer them using a USB drive

Thanks, that's what I needed to know.  "Big investment" is ok - I have the good fortune of this being my workstation, so it is tax deductible, giving me a nice little excuse to spend more than I probably need to in order to accomplish stuff like this 😂

I would first check the drive's SMART status, as this can reveal many errors. This article explains how to do it with CrystalDiskInfo, which is typically how I check SMART data.

Put in a drive with 1000 bad sectors and

it still said OK. So this method isn't really reliable - checking SMART is much better.

I'd say run CHKDSK as well.

I recommend Vistaprint, not necessarily the cheapest but very reasonably priced and very good quality in my experience.

TheStyne got a reaction from Brandon Shinobu in One (Hopefully) Last Problem
I'm not an expert, but in my experience when you have a faulty GPU, CPU, RAM, etc then the problem presents itself through a blue screen or freeze, as windows tries to pick up the pieces of the missing hardware. In this case, since the whole computer shuts off I really suspect a power delivery problem, either in the 24 pin or the entire power supply. I suppose it could also be some kind of problem with the wiring in your home, so you could also try another outlet and make sure it isn't connected to a power strip or extension cord. I doubt it, though, considering it happens randomly as opposed to when under load.

It certainly could be, but no way to be 100% sure without checking. Could also be the Strimer, no idea what the quality of that thing is like. Best bet would honestly be to hook all power supply cables directly into the components and give it a try, just to rule out any variables. I know it's a hassle, but that would be my personal next step 🙂

I wouldn't worry about those temps. They're kinda high, but they're definitely nothing to worry about. Especially since it's not while gaming, it's not realistically going to affect the longevity or performance of your CPU.

I would take a look at your motherboard's BIOS, and just try different fan curves. Ideally you want it very low when the CPU is cool, and then you want them to ramp up once it's underload. The only way you can really test this is to set it in the BIOS, then run some benchmarks and see where the noise level and temps are at. You've got a lot of fans, so it's not surprising that they would be pretty noisy. As for the GPU, same kind of idea but with whatever software controls their fan curve(I believe MSI Afterburner will do it?).

What's your specific motherboard model? As far as I can tell from MSI's website, all of their X470 boards have M.2, I could definitely be missing something though.

The only benefits of a Xeon over a consumer Core processor is going to exactly what's outlined on the specs page. They will(usually) have more PCIE lanes, support for certain workstation and server features, increased cache(sometimes), and will often have higher peak core numbers at the top of the line. But with two apples to apples CPUs(equal cores, clock speed, etc), there's no inherent advantage in a Xeon.

TheStyne got a reaction from genexis_x in HP Laptop Reliability
I would say that chart is very biased. If you think about it, what brands of laptops are the most common? I would go with HP and Dell, especially in a business setting. So, RescueCom will get HP and Dell computers most often, because more people use them. Therefore, they will represent a higher share of the computers. That chart doesn't speak to reliability at all, it really just speaks to which brand has the most computers out in the world.

Personally, I find all consumer grade laptops from Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, etc to be very similar at any given price point. They all use very similar components and therefore have very similar reliability. More business grade laptops, like a ThinkPad or a Latitude, I find have better build quality and longevity generally, but cost more and look more business-y. They also aren't the really high performance models. That's just my take from my experience, though.

I assume your ethernet cable is hooked up to the main Orbi unit, not one of the satellites? If you're hooked up to a satellite, then that would probably be the root of your problem.
