Rauten got a reaction from Mark Kaine in Austrian privacy regulator: Google Analytics violates GDPR & Dutch Data Protection Authority warns of possible ban on Google Analytics
On one hand, I really like this and hope it has EU-wide consequences.
On the other hand, I wonder if this could push Google to outright refuse to provide certain services in Europe, and what the effect of such an action could be?

Or it might just turn into one of those "Oh it's forbidden but the economic penalties aren't so big that they're going to bother changing anything", A.K.A., a Google "tax".

The Hubble Space telescope launched back 32 years ago, gave the world a glimpse of what's beyond our Solar System, and now it's getting extra years of life as NASA and SpaceX plans,
Polaris will being its first space walk mission in March 2023 and if it's successful, then they're planning to perform another one, this time on the Hubble, to perform some service work, like replacing them gyroscopes that controls Hubble's telescope, where only 3 out of 6 remains in working order. For the boost, SpaceX's Dragon will dock with Hubble and bring it from its current orbit of 535km up to 600km, the original orbit altitude launch back in 1990. Without the idea of boosting Hubble, NASA would have to send a module and bring it safely back to Earth, but with the boosting idea, Hubble may see an extra 15 to even 20 years of orbital life.

I've got Prime95 benchmark results from elsewhere for 7950X, and am comparing it to my 11700k and 7920X. This is interesting as, depending on FFT size, it could indicate efficiency of AVX implementation as well as cache/memory performance.

    1K FFT
n cores n workers (1 task per core, scales well)

    0.86/core - 13.7M 16 cores 7950X
    0.74/core - 5.9M 8 cores 11700k - peak power observed 195W
    0.47/core - 5.6M 12 cores 7920X - this defaults to power 140W limit. I can't observe actual power

Higher is better. This is not clock normalised so it is NOT IPC. I'd expect Zen 4 to be similar or better to Rocket Lake, and that seems to be the case here. The Skylake-X result is much lower than expected. I don't have an explanation for this, but my guess is that at a 1k FFT size, it isn't big enough to load the extra execution resource. I have requested tests at bigger FFT sizes that should load it better without being memory limited.

    8064k
n cores 1 worker - 1 task using all cores. The expectation here is that the large FFT size pushes this mostly to memory limiting, but maybe not! More on that later.

    318 7950X - dual channel 4400
    258 7920X - quad channel 3000 (2R per channel)
    95 11700k - dual channel 2166 (4R per channel)

Higher is better. If this was pure memory bandwidth limiting, it should scale with ram. We're not seeing that, with the 7950X punching a good amount above the 7920X. Let's ignore the poor dual channel 11700k system.

So what could be happening here? The thing is, 7950X has 64MB in total of L3 cache, which appears enough to hold the workload's effective 63MB of data. In my own testing on Zen 2, and with assistance of others, testing on Zen 3, the split CCX nature gets in the way so scaling is less than ideal. However it might not be nothing, so that might give it the edge in this scenario. We need a workload that pushes it harder and... I have that data. I'll either edit it in later or post a new reply once I've compiled that data. 3D cache version would be really sweet for this use case.

    Edit:

    8064k n cores n workers (1 task per core)

    180 7950X
    250 7920X
    94 11700k

Ok, now we're definitely pushing it hard into ram bandwidth limiting, and the 7950X drops below the 7920X as expected. Skylake-X has 39% more potential bandwidth, and scores 36% higher, so this seems about right. So regardless of Aida64 results, overall performance seems to be scaling within expectations.

The decode engine in the 40 series is the same, but they have updated their encoding engine to support AV1 encoding!
It seems like they have also decided to include two encoding engines, so we might see a doubling in encoding performance in addition to the new format support.

Edit: It's confirmed that the dual encoders can work on the same encoding task, thus doubling performance.
They are also working with multiple software vendors such as OBS, Discord and DaVinci to add support for hardware accelerated AV1 encoding. They are also making improvements to the older generation of GPUs in OBS, reducing encoding overhead by around 35%.

I feel like Windows 11, in many ways was Microsoft taking two steps backwards. Some of the changes in this update is them taking one step forward, but they are still nowhere where I want them to be.

There are also thing I just don't get in this update.
Global mute button? Sounds great! Except for some reason it only works in Teams. Apparently developers can opt in if they want, but not even Microsoft could be bothered to do it in more than Teams. I am not even sure it works in all Team versions. So if Microsoft can't be bothered, why should we expect other developers to bother?
Just make it actually mute the mic, regardless of if a program has opted in. There is no reason to make a "global mute" button that only mutes one program.

A lot of the bullet points in this update are just "this menu has been updated with the Windows 11 style". That should have been included in day 1. It shouldn't have taken them a year to make the UI in rather basic things like the language selection consistent. It's still nowhere consistent by the way, not even after this update.
During the first Windows 11 reveal Panos said that the team obsessed over every single pixel, because details matter. So far, I haven't seen any indication of this. They just did what they always do, introduce a new design guideline and then updated some stuff with it.
Didnt like the old inconsistent UI with 5 different styles in different places of the OS? Here is your new OS with 6 differen styles!

Overall I think this update is good. But Windows 11 as a whole is still, in my opinion, a step backwards from Windows 10. The big promise of an updated and consistent UI is still far from complete, the parts they did rewrite are not only much less performant (their new UI framework sucks when it comes to performance, it is god awful) but also missing a lot of basic features.
And Microsoft are still trying to make Windows something that serves them rather than their users. There is no reason why users should be expected to follow a 4 step guide on how to configure a local account rather than a Microsoft account. Users shouldn't have to press counter intuitive prompts that goes against their intentions just to get the result they want.
The OS should exist and be designed to serve its users. It should strive to have as little friction as possible and help the user achieve their intended goal as quickly and easily as possible.
It shouldn't exist to try and annoy the users into doing what the maker wants users to do.
Users shouldn't have to fight the OS at every turn just to get it to work the way they want and expect. People who are against this simple concept are servants of a corporation that don't care for their users. Only a masochist would encourage such hostile behavior.

Not it's not. With a PC, you might sell it with the power cord. With a cell phone, people trade them in or sell without the charger all the time. It's the year 2022, you don't need a new charger if the existing one is compatible and working fine.

IMHO what Apple should do is provide the total price of the phone and charger as a bundle, and then a reduced price sans the charger. Let the consumer decide.
