  1. My question is: why is Microsoft being so obstructive about making the ISO downloads available if (with some rooting around) they are still ok with you getting it from them?

  2. Well, changing to ACHI does seem to have fixed the problem (pending some stability testing).

There is one more odd issue though: during POST, there is the option to press F12 to bring up the boot menu. In order to install Windows from my USB drive I needed to do this, but I've found that if I press it before the AHCI SATA devices have started to load, the system hangs and restarts. If I wait until the AHCI SATA devices have started to load and then press F12, it will then give me the boot menu.

Does anyone know what might be causing that?

  3. I had a look at WPS office - and it is very close to MS Office but with a pricing model to match. Also the country of origin and the propensity to spam ads all over the place makes me wonder about security.

Softmaker FreeOffice does seem to have a slightly better filter function than LibreOffice (at least for my needs) and a pretty decent interface - but still no filter by colour! I can probably use a helper column to aid the colour sorting, but still it baffles me that only Excel and WPS have managed to include this function.

  4. OpenOffice and LibreOffice appear to have the same limitations regarding filtering. For example, you cannot do something as simple as filtering according to cell colour (unless, I assume, you want to do some coding of your own). Google sheets also does not appear to support this functionality. Googling around, it is dismaying to see people repeatedly asking for this functionality and being told in reply that they shouldn't want it.

  5. Having some issue with the GSATA ports on my Gigabyte X58A-UD3R - the white ones which I gather are on a separate controller: the machine is frequently crashing when loading Windows 10 Pro 64 and when in Windows whenever my boot SSD is plugged into one of those. I've tried changing to AHCI mode in the BIOS but the machine simply fails to boot from the SSD at all then. I'm running a 920 and 6x4GB RAM. The machine seems to run fine when the blue ordinary SATA ports are used.

Anyone have any ideas what's going on here?

  6. It will probably put more stress on your GPU (assuming your setup is generally hitting your current Vsync limit). So if your card is capable of 90FPS average but you have Vsync locked @ 60FPS on, your card will only be running 2/3 load. If you buy a Freesync monitor which can run up to (let's say) 90FPS, you will be running at much higher loads on your GPU - but you will see higher FPS above 60 as a result.

It all depends what FPS your setup can do and what refresh rate the monitor you buy can do.

  7. I'm not so sure. There is something on the mounting bracket that says 'Either DVI-D or HDMI 2', as shown here:

These are the two ports that will not play with each other. However, fair enough that you can't use them at the same time, but I find it odd that the driver has to be reinstalled before you can switch between them.

Anyone got a similar card and can comment about this?

  8. I've been testing out a GTX1080ti today, but found it doing something odd when changing video outputs. The card has 3x DisplayPort, 2x HDMI and 1x DVI, but one of the HDMI ports doesn't want to play with the DVI. If I install the driver with the cable plugged into the HDMI, when I swap to the DVI I get a black screen. If I restart with the cable still in the DVI, I get the video memory management internal error, and then the machine restarts with the driver suspended (low resolution). The machine will then reinstall the driver and outputs fine from the DVI, but now if I swap back to the HDMI, I get the black screen and the video memory management internal error on restart. So it seems like the driver sets itself up for either one port all the other. All the other ports (HDMI + 3x Displayport) seem happy to work with anything else.

I'm concerned with it being such an expensive card, that there is this random issue with two ports not being interchangeable without completely reinstalling the driver.

Does anyone know what might be going on here?

  9. I'm testing an FX9590 on an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 and an 850W Corsair PSU, but having problems with it crashing on Prime95. So far it's ok on AIDA64 but it seems to me it should be stable on Prime95 too. The motherboard is running the most recent BIOS. Temps appear fine (60s celcius at point of crashing). Can anyone suggest what the issue might be here?

  10. I bought a Dell laptop off Ebay, which seems fine, except that when I press F12 to show boot options, one of the UEFI options is 'kali'. I gather this is a type of Linux (something I can imagine the previous owner using), however there is no partition for anything other than Windows on the machine's hard drive. When I try to boot kali, it says 'boot device has failed' or something similar.

Can anyone suggest why this option might be showing, and how to get rid of it?

  11. Just been trying out a 4790K on a couple of different motherboards, but found that they seem to treat the turbo differently. On Prime95 with my Z87 based Gigabyte board, the CPU is running 4.2GHz all cores, which I gather is the maximum all core turbo. But on Prime with my Z97 based Gigabyte board, the CPU is running 4.4GHz all cores. Could this be a case of 'stock setting overclocking'? I've heard of that, but a bit surprised to find it within the same company on two similar boards. Both boards have BIOS reset to defaults (other than XMP).
