Getting all the details before publication is *NOT* the opposite of journalistic integrity.

Thanks for the concern everyone. We are still in recovery mode over here and working with YouTube to get everything restored. Will hopefully have a video (or at least an update on WAN Show) to share with you all ASAP, but we want to make sure we get the details right since smaller channels may rely on our experience to help harden their own security.

The LTT Forum is now 10 years old! What started out as an experiment hosted in Linus's garage has now become a thriving community of tech enthusiasts, with some pretty impressive numbers, thanks in no small part to all of you!

The forum has come a long way from the incredibly unstable VBulletin 5 beta that we started out with in 2013, and I hope you will agree that it looks far better today than it did back then:

The forum exists because of its awesome community. As a small way of giving back, we're going to give away some 1 year Gold Contributor memberships, which give you Floatplane access, based on recent activity on the forum. The giveaway criteria are:
5 will be randomly assigned to the authors of posts made in the past 3 months (so your chance of winning is proportional to the number of posts you have made in the past 3 months), to give something back to everyone that makes this community awesome. Posts removed by a moderator, and posts in Test Posts, do not qualify. 10 will be randomly assigned to members who joined the forum in or before 2015 and have made at least one post on the forum in the past 3 months, to thank our most loyal members. 5 will be given to the members with the most posts that were marked as the best answer in the past 3 months, to say thanks to the members that give the most back to the community. Posts where a member marked their own post as best answer are excluded. Winners will be drawn later this week, and notified via PM by me. The full list of winners will be published here once all winners have accepted their prize.

All winners have now been contacted and received their prize

    Ts&Cs:
Max one prize per user If a winner already has a Gold Contributor subscription, they will get 1 year free starting from their next billing period Current moderators and administrators, and employees of LMG or its subsidiaries, are not eligible The giveaways will be drawn in the order listed. If an ineligible user is drawn (per points 1 and 3 above), an additional winner will be drawn. Winners will have 7 days from being notified via PM to accept the prize (by replying to the PM), otherwise their prize will be redrawn under the same rules. No cash value, non-transferrable, run at our own discretion, etc. Please don't get mad if you don't win. "Past 3 months" means between 00:00 on 01 October 2022 and 23:59 on 31 December 2022 inclusive, all UTC (so it's too late to try and game the system now). "In or before 2015" means the "Joined" field on the account is before 00:00 UTC on 01 January 2016.

Easy to solve, Linus.  Do a copyright strike whenever those Tech Quickie guys steal your content.  3 strikes and you don't have to worry about them anymore.

This is an excellent explanation of how these things work.

I'd like to add that as long as the creator who gets the automated claim disputes it in a timely manner, there is no lost revenue during the period while it was "claimed".

I've been down at IBM Think for the last couple of days and this thread is the first I'm hearing of this issue.. Aaaand it's already resolved.

So, as far as I can tell, everything is working as it should...ish

We have noticed a significant uptick in copyright claims in the last couple of weeks, though, with some of them being in really really old content which suggests youtube has made some kind of change to ContentID and we've been trying to figure out how to address it.

We are generally pretty supportive of the creation of derivative works by our community and we want to make sure that they aren't being algorithmically claimed, but this change has caused other issues for us too. I woke up the other morning to a handful of claims made against Tech Quickie by LTT... Can't have that.

I'm sure this will be resolved, but it's probably going to take some time for youtube to get their crap in order, as usual.

Why would you do that, defender is basically just as good now. And get legit keys if your buying software.

Not really a risk as its not accessable outside of the network, and these gray market keys might be tied to hardware or a VL server is probalby why its needed. But really refund this order or just dont use the software.

Nerdom reacted to TempestCatto in Why doesn't LTT staff use Vivaldi for web browsing in the office?
They just use whatever works best for their workflow. If you make a person who is used to using ProTools use Ableton, they're not gonna be as good or quick at doing projects, and their overall quality will be reduced as a result. Sure they can learn over time, but it's just not worth it in the long run.

I know that was a big comparison there, but my point stands. They're used to using one thing, it works very well, there are no major flaws with it that would cause concern so why switch? It's fine.

Nerdom reacted to LinusTech in @LinusTech Twitter Account Hacked
On June 28, 2016 the Linus Media Group domain registrar account was compromised.

The exact methodology of the "hack" won't be disclosed for obvious reasons, but I can assure you that despite any claims to the contrary, the appropriate safeguards were in place on our side, and as I type this Yvonne is having a very heated phone discussion with the 3rd party responsible for the breach.

Anyway, the thing most of you are probably wondering about right now is what this means for your forum account or personal information, and the answer is very simple:

    NOTHING.

The "hacker" simply changed the DNS settings in the dashboard and did not at any time have access to the linustechtips.com server. Any claims of a database dump are categorically false.

The compromised accounts - including Twitter - have been restored.

I hope this clears things up.

In what way does it not work?

    - Does it not compile? In that case the compiler should tell you what the issue is. Ideally include the error message you're getting.
    - Does it not work in the sense that it doesn't do what you expected? In that case you should mention what exactly it is you're trying to do.

Nerdom reacted to Mateyyy in Does a 4 pin CPU connector work with an 8 pin Motherboard?
You can plug just a 4-pin in the 8-pin EPS connector on the motherboard.
But, the fact that your PSU doesn't have an 8-pin EPS connector to start with, and that it can only output 15A on the 12V rail (so 180W), is a little alarming, to say the least.

Basically, I'd recommend you buy a non-dumpster-fire power supply, instead of potentially creating more problems.
You don't need to break the bank to get something decent - there's units like the Corsair CX/CXM, Cooler Master MWE Bronze v2/White v2, be quiet! System Power 9/Pure Power 10 or 11 400W+ (not the 300/350W variants) or Seasonic S12III, which should power your components just fine at an acceptable price.

I'd hesitate to call it scamming but it's still an all around crap move. Perhaps if the email said 'gift' then it wouldn't have gone over so poorly though.

    Edit:
I missed the part that they had sent out an email stating no bonuses would be given a couple days prior. Yah, no sympathy for people not being suspect of an email like this then.
