So at work we were doing some maintenance, usually around this time of year when pantos are finishing up or have a few days off...
In theatre land we deal with lots of power, and use a decent amount of 3 phase. I love this stuff, it makes me feel happy in side. 
During the show run, one of our 400 amp cables got run over by a genie and decided it didn't want to work, this is a critical power line as it runs a load of dimmers, which in turn make the lights work. 
So we decided to replace a bunch of that circuit and others that looked like they needed some TLC. 
The thing about 3 phase is that crossing a phase isn't a good idea. Actually its an idea you don't want to try. 
As we're a bit short staffed, people who don't know much about wiring are roped in to lend a hand, and someone couldn't work out how to count to 5 and match some colours, and crossed phase 1 and 3 (Somehow) 
Anyway as its a 400 amp line I was testing the continuities of the phases, and realised they didn't line up as they should, marked the cable as "F**cked" over the pins and left it to one side. Lo and behold, I find this after lunch in the back of the dimmer distro, thank god the main power was still off otherwise it would have been an expensive mistake. 
Someone obs saw the tape, took it off to plug it in, but left the tape on the cable and put a ? mark on it. Like come on, don't plug it in if it says its fucked

He knows now. we now have a company policy (as im currently on a tour) that only certain people are allowed to do patching and be in the dimmer room of the venue. 
I did spend my lunch hour with him showing and doing 3 phase socket wiring, along with 15 amp. The more you know! 
he will probs never use that info, apart from don't jam a finger into a socket. 

Seen someone today in the dimmer room (Where we patch dimmed power lanterns (15 amp)) 
He's a new kid learning the ropes, I think he was on placement
We have 3 x 3 phase power (64 amps) that come into the room where we can plug the dimmers into. 
Someone asks him to plug dimmer rack 3 into no3 socket on the wall. (pretty normal request in a theatre) 
These bad bays are a bit of a tight fit and take a good push to get them in.
he doesn't know this, so has a look up the female side on the wall, then proceeds to try and get his finger into one of the holes (you can fit a pinkie in if you try) 
I walk in and literally kick his hip to push him away from this, and proceed to explain that in 3 phase power, every pin is a live pin. 
Is it not common sense that you don't stick a finger into a plug socket? 
He could have been dead on the floor if he had managed to get his finger in. 
 
Also each rack has 60 dimmers and they're 2400w each, and im pretty sure most of the channels were already live for so that when they came online the bar of lights we just rigged would come on. We deal with some real power

NGL my sister has some form of an iPad and pencil thing, I did enjoy working on it whilst she let me to quickly design a set for a play at I though of when we were on the train. 
Would I use it everyday? Probs not, but then again I do like using the surface laptops that we have at work. 
I would try both in a store, see which one you get on better with

If the systems have been made correctly and are like some of the add-ons to X-plane like the Zibo mod, then I would def try it out 

I was at work today and we have a network share for most of the files that we need to run shows (schedules, plans bla bla bla)
Someone was trying to find the script that has the notes for the lighting commands written onto it 
I.e the script that has the number of the effect or scene written against the line.
Only issue is he is trying to connect to the network drive, from the lighting desk. Now, it does have an ethernet cable in the back of it, but this is not internet. 
It doesn't even have a bloody file system that is available when the desk is running in the event file. 
He said he spent 20 mins trying to find the drop down that shows you all of the different drives, like in windows. 
He seemed to fail to realise the red file on the shelf with massive "SCRIPTS" written on the spine of it. 
I only have so much patience with people, I just gave him the folder and didn't say anything else. 
He's usually good with this kind of thing. 
 

I worked jobs that looking back I would rather shit in my hands and clap then do again. 
Just go up your local high street or whatever with a CV and find someone who will employ you for the summer months 

The gauge of wires is so thin it will make it super hard. 
Start with wiring lights or something easier to get the skills then move on to trying this project

Try going to the auto settings and seeing if there are any devices disabled.
Right click on the taskbar sound, sounds, playback and make sure the device you want is enabled

So lighting desks arnt the most intuitive bits of kit to use, but a co-worker who was sort of new was working on a job with me. His background had been rigging and hardware, not programming and operation.
I tell him to execute a simple command on the board, power up DMX channels 120-300 at 60% intensity. 
He looks at me like I've just told him the nuclear codes, he has no idea what to do. 
It's not hard, just tap in 120 - 300 % 60 on the keypad and click go. 
He went back to hardware after about a month or so...

We used to see how quickly we could make the computers shit themselves in solid works when I did design. 
It didn't take long, just open a large assembly of something you made at home. 
My priced procession was a whole transaxle, college computer couldn't even open that bad boy
