Never had any issues with Sharkoon or Hema cables.

I try to stay away from the no-name brands because they're really hit-and-miss.  I don't mind having a cheap cable that works perfectly, but I do mind the ones that short out after 2 weeks and destroy your motherboard or set your house on fire.

This would be an amazingly good device as a rugged tablet. Ironically enough, the issue with this device is that its too small. Make it a 10-12" screen, make the battery even larger (physically, to fill out the extra size. This would up the capacity a lot too), incorporate bumpers and rubberize it, and slap on Windows 10 on ARM (and a processor to keep up with said load)

You just got yourself a Toughbook Tablet competitor.

I wouldn't be surprised to see PS4 Slim for $149 this Black Friday considering PS5 will probably be announced Spring 2020 and launched Fall 2020. PS4 Slim has gone on all kinds of sales the last few years. I bought mine in December 2016 for $220 with Uncharted 4 and since then the holiday deals have kept getting better. Your next bet for a discounted PS4 is probably the Days of Play sale they usually do in May or June. It won't be a Black Friday level deal though.

To be honest with you... While I do see some appeal to a nice Macbook Pro for example (Final Cut is quite good IMO), I think in your case, you'd be completely playing yourself to buy an Apple machine based on your use case.. Like, outright scamming yourself.

It really depends what you're doing. But you could be very well-served with something like an Acer Swift 3 w/ i5-8250u and Nvidia MX150. For your uses, you'll see equivelent performance, and in fact better in some sense, because of the dedicated GPU on board, so at least you could do some light gaming if you so choose.

If you want similar specs to the above, but a more premium Mac-like feel, go for something like an Asus Zenbook with those same specs. Again, similar performance, still-premium feel, great display, superior compatbility for any kind of program you may want to run (Windows can't be beat here), and the ability to game, for under HALF the cost.

Also, it might be really fun to harass your classmates on getting scammed into buying a Mac, and you can flash your generally superior Windows machine with pride.

Okay, that last part is for me.

So, it turns out, that at a small scale, it's cheaper to go solar, because it requires less engineering.

On my favourite electronic component supply website I can get panels at £3/W, whereas the cheapest motors come in at around £5-£10, and have a built in gearbox which may help or hinder your project. And an AC motor, which produces a nicer waveform, costs at least £30.

And then, you need the actual turbine blades! While you could build a William Kamkwamba style turbine, it might not win favour with a HOA. You'll possibly end up 3D printing it. Oh, and a housing. These costs add up.

Meanwhile, on the solar project, we're already at the power conditioning stage. Once again, solar comes out on top, since we'll likely be using DC-DC conversion, with a relatively stable signal. Output 5v to charge a phone, or whatever.

On the wind side, we'd need much better power conditioning, as DC motors are noisy, and an AC motor won't produces a useful waveform either. You'd need to do either AC-DC conversion, or AC-AC conversion, both of which are more complicated than DC-DC regulation.

AC-DC conversion needs a bridge rectifier, and some smoothing circuitry to ensure a nice flat DC signal.

AC-AC conversion is even more difficult. This is because you have your input signal, which is within some range of frequencies, and then you need to convert it into a specific frequency. For a hobbyist, perhaps you'd choose a motor-generator set - tripling the cost of the motors (at least)!

TL:DR Solar is cheaper to build at small scales, if you have access to the internet.

Right of course, but I think an individual or company can be "anti-free speech" without us talking about government. More along the lines of, "Do they support the free exchange of ideas within their company? If not, they're anti-free speech."

I'm pretty conservative and I think government has stuck its nose in A LOT of places it never should have. But I really am starting to see the argument that Google, Facebook and Twitter should be regulated as utilities in order to prevent this stuff. I'm still not bananas about it, but if protecting/forwarding individual rights in the public square is a legitimate role of government, I see it as potentially legitimate here.

I think the biggest issue is this, and most would probably agree: The rules are not enforced uniformly, and in fact for some, depending on political leanings, there is essentially a set of "unwritten" rules that lead to bans on the fly, rather than because they violate official codes of conduct.

This isn't a major issue in and of itself, but the issue is that it may end up as too little too late. Suppose they could someone hit that $250 GTX 1080 (or greater) performance. But what will Nvidia have right on the horizon?

But this could also be a tactical movie for them. We could see a Playstation response to the One X with a Navi APU launched sooner than we think. I'm sure Sony isn't enthusiastic that their pro console gets stomped by the One X.

So perhaps we see a PS4 Pro v2 / PS5 at a great price point, competetive with One X with better performance. "Right now, we're only putting Navi in PS5. Wait just a bit longer, and you will be amazed at what our full Navi series will be able to do."

    I wonder..

X58, if you don't mind the jank, is still a great option. For something less sketchy, SB - Devil's Canyon i7s or their Xeon brethren (for dat ecc) are good options. Also if you can find a board (Craft Computing has done a few videos on surprisingly functional Chinese ones) X79 Xeons are fairly popular these days. For newer than that, it's hard to beat a Ryzen 5

just keep that system. i've got dual X5650's and 48GB of ram and it's an absolute beast of a machine. yours is even faster so... just keep it

i'd imagine that the newer chips are still in use in most datacenters because intel has been doing practically nothing the past 8 years for their mainstream and xeon lineup (other than slapping more core's on the chips), which is why X58 holds up so well. so because the newer chips are still used a lot they still cost a lot...

i can imagine X58 no longer being used in datacenters because of power consumption... so that's why they're cheap.

i'm just guessing here though.. i could be wrong.

While the chances are pretty slim of it not working, you might want to check to make sure the boards are compatible. I seem to remember that not all OEM boards will work with just any old CPU dropped into them.

As @LukeSavenije said, just drop a few dollars on a better cooler.

You're very welcome! I agree, and I'm extremely excited for Ryzen 3000 series. Some are even speculating that the "3700x" (or equivelent, whatever they call it) will essentially be a 1st gen Threadripper 1950x in core count, so 16/32. This might be an exaggeration. In fact, it probably is. But I'm really glad I waited 'till now.

I said I was going to upgrade 1st gen and waited, saying the same thing for Ryzen 2000. But knowing what's coming with 7nm and possibly doubling core count, or at least considerably better performance overall with a huge shrink like that, this was definitely worth the wait. Besides, I really need to upgrade my FX-8350. It's still "fine", but really showing its age.

God-tier budget for a system like this would something X5650 or similar. Running a dual X5675 system and it rips through video rendering. So it's basically a Ryzen 7 1700 in performance, for a whole system that costs a similar amount.

If you're looking at a single CPU system and willing to go with one of these older systems, go with a Xeon W3670, since it has an unlocked multiplier and you'll be able to overclock it with XTU even on most cheap workstation boards. Not your worst option for gaming, either. So if you don't necessarily need epic single-threaded performance, power consumption is VERY tame here.

    Just a suggestion.

All that being said, if you just need speed and don't care about max price/performance, I think maybe something like an overclocked Ryzen 7 1700 will be a great choice, since it goes for a lower premium and might as well be an 1800x anyway. I would seriously wait for Ryzen 3000 though, to wait for any price drops on older CPU's, or to see what new performance you'll get at a similar price.

cache speeds aside,   Focus on single core performance revolves around the fact that it is an 'intense' rendering test.   far more taxing than any real game would expect your computer to process for a fluid immersion.    And most games are optimized for single core thread performance,     Any thing beyond a quad core, hyper-threaded (or amd smt i think)  id not necessary if gaming is your most taxing event (even for hours)  unless you are gaming at 1440p, or 4k,  (60 or 120/144 hz)  with multiple things also happening at the same time.

I don't know that answer technically but also not sure what you are using. But for my example let's use my cpu which is a i7-8700k(model 2017) 6 cores and 12 threads just like the x5675(model 2011). X5675 uses ddr3 I believe and 8700k uses ddr4. Faster. The Cache on the 8700k is more than the x5675 and also higher clock speeds. Newer tech and also new instructions in bedded in the 8700k which benchmarking the 2 against each other the 8700k is going to be 100% faster.

    Pulled from google:
Cache memory is important because it provides data to a CPU faster than main memory, which increases the processor's speed. The alternative is to get the data from RAM, or random access memory, which is much slower.
