bmichaels556 got a reaction from Itnozetr3 in Is it still worth buying an 1060 6GB ?
To be honest, in my experience, the 1060 6GB was a downgrade to my RX 480 8GB. It just so happened I got a 1060 6GB for SUPER cheap and made a little money on selling off my other card.

The number of games you can comfortably play on either is shrinking, and fast. I really wouldn't be looking at ANYTHING under the sort of 2060 Super / RX 6600 non-XT level, like at all. A lot of times, even my 2070 Super feels completely gimped in a lot of new games coming out, although DLSS helps in some cases, but that depends. FSR 2.0 is half-decent as well. I am curious how FSR 3.0 is going to do just as far as framerate, it won't really help latency...

I just feel like you're chasing performance that is simply already too far behind the 8-ball to ever justify if you don't already have one of these cards, OR if you're doing something purpose-built eg an emulation rig or something that has fairly reasonable GPU requirements even to run games at like 4K60 w/ anti-aliasing etc etc. But for general purpose? I'd advise against it.

My plan at the start of December was to get something last gen, but i just missed the lower prices and 3080's went back to 1000 (where they still are new). I can get a 3080 for around 800, given the fact the 4070ti is the same, that would be stupid. The same goes for 6950xt. Its around 750-800 euros, but the Inno3D GeForce RTX4070 TI X3 12GB is 800 new (without VAT of course). I tried the second hand market a bit, but prices are still quite high and the cheaper offers always have some kind of catch. Like not having a receipt and being out of warranty. It would save me like 150-200 euros and its nowhere near enough to be worth it. I'd just rather pay a little extra and be covered. I'm not interested in the 2 series.

One way would be to get a 4070ti and then maybe check out the 5 gen when it comes out. But the 4080 and even more 4090 i can skip at least 2 gens, like i always did. I usually upgrade 5+years, so i dislike constantly selling and buying stuff.

TRUE, good catch. Maybe I can do some kind of jumper or whatever..? I remember hearing this somewhere, so thanks for giving me the heads up on the card reader. Actually, I've heard the front panel in general might be a bit of a monkey wrench in the whole thing. Gonna' have to check more into it before I 100% go for case swap.

Also, thanks for letting me know about deshroud. My main hope is that it'll just run much cooler in the new case, I think it'll definitely help. But if not, that might be the best option, I'll see how it goes. Although I think just controlling fans that way in general seems like a pain.

Well, your Number 1 choice looks to have good airflow front to back and has the standard PSU tucked away, so assuming the cables all fit, it looks fine to me

before u go ahead with case swap, u need to make sure the card reader is connected to mobo or it'll have a boot error (see below)
    https://www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/XPS-8930-GPU-and-CPU-Liquid-Cooler-PSU-Case-Swap-Upgrade/m-p/7189904/highlight/true#M21680

also u can do gpu deshroud & ziptie on some 92mm fans, you'll need an adapter for gpu to fan pwm
    https://www.reddit.com/r/sffpc/comments/kx6c9k/deshroud_help_noctuas_permanently_running_at_100/

i done that deshroud for my older zotac mini 1070
EDIT: u can also control deshrouded fan rpm via mobo if the gpu fan connects to mobo

Shockingly, it appears to. Maybe one of the few good things they've done in a long time, at least on this line of PC's.

Could be either.  Doing a better TIM job could tell you.  I don’t know if that thing will take liquid metal or not (liquid metal has numerous complications and may not be safe long term on that hardware) there are other systems though that work better than stock paste if not as well as liquid metal. Also research the mod.  You may also need thermal pads or tape of a specific thickness, and there may be other complications for that model.   I am fond of diamond filled pastes myself but they have their own issues.  If temps go down more than a few degrees it’s the card. (And you did as much as could be done anyway) If they don’t it’s your case

bmichaels556 reacted to 8tg in Zotac 2070 Super Mini is running hot... Is it the card, or my case..?
It’s a Zotac mini so it’s going to be hotter than the average to begin with but I recommend getting some new thermal paste and new thermal pads applied regardless.

To sort of summarize what you said here:
    -it’s a Zotac mini
-it’s used and you haven’t changed the paste yet
-it’s in a case with lackluster airflow
-it’s hitting 84c under load at max fan speed

I feel the answer to “why is it hot” is just those first 3 points.

bmichaels556 reacted to KaitouX in A Good Deal? Or a Waste? (i7 8700 Dell)
The 8700 is decent, but while it does retain some value when selling, it's probably a bad idea to buy one unless they are $100 or less as it's performance is on par with the i5 10400 which goes for 130. The GPU could probably be worth a bit more than $150 when selling used, $200~$250 is closer to what it's being sold currently. The memory is probably 2133Mhz with bad timings, so likely not really worth that much. I wouldn't buy/use a used consumer SSD, but it's probably worth $30 or so at best considering how much a new one costs. Motherboard is likely a proprietary if it's on a "recent" Dell prebuilt, so probably also not worth much, also if it's proprietary, you probably can't use a standard case. If the motherboard is actually proprietary, the case is also kinda useless, as you likely can't use it with standard boards.

The PC itself is decent, but I probably wouldn't say it's a good deal. Assuming you only want the CPU, MB, RAM and storage, you can probably build something new much better under $500.

A significantly faster and upgradable system. Another option would be to get a 10400 for ~$400, which would probably perform around the same as a 8700, possibly faster if the memory is actually 2666MHz or less with bad timings. While both options are a bit more expensive then that system when you consider the GPU sale price, I would say the difference is worth it.

Not running it at the moment, but I think it typically runs sustained at like 1902mHz or something. Typically get a junction temp of 91c and overall temp of like 72c

Folding on just my 5700xt I think I am averaging around 1,200,000 PPD, left everything stock pretty much. The card is running on the PowerColor OC bios, drawing like 202W i believe.

For Gen 1 (Zen) it depends on the task - Cinebench?  Doesn't give a shit between 2133mhz to 3600mhz.  Gaming?  Absolute night and day difference for CPU bound titles.  If it were me, and it was (I own 2133mhz CL14, 3200mhz CL16 3600mhz CL18 kits) I would go with the absolute highest frequency possible.  With Zen, timings didn't mean nearly as much as frequency however so I cant comment on that with Zen++

The difference is very tangible. 2133 is very slow. I went from 2666 to 3200 and I stopped noticing a lot of stutters that i did with 2666!

Just some fantasy math here - If every LTT folder donated $1 (would never happen, but work with me here) you could run 23 of the above servers for the remaining time of this competition.  That would be 1,472 cores, 184 GPUs, and 11.2TB of memory.
