  1. Yeah, you easily went over my head right here, I have the data downloaded, but I have no idea how to effectively use it to get what I want out of it. You listed off a few options for software, I was aware of only one from when I was in school - ArcGIS, but since I don't want to pay money for something I will probably use only once I will be using QGIS since I don't want to learn commands for a Windows program. Skipping wayyy ahead: After I get the final path and export it (?) what file format should I use? Also I am assuming we will be using OpenStreetMap for navigation, right? I would like to make sure I am clear about what you meant by: By this did you mean you would help me by giving me tips and pointing me in the right direction, or did you mean by doing the work for me? I only ask because if you are doing this for me you should be paid for your work. Thanks in advance!
  2. These GIS files (shapefiles), where/how do I get/make these files? Do I need certain software to make/get them, or is it online based, because if it is online based I am pretty sure any web browser I use would just crash upon trying to generate the file with the parameters I would enter. If you are wanting to help me by "going full QGIS/GRASS on it" my state is Minnesota/MN and my country is United States (U.S. Obviously). Thank you
  3. I have started work with the Google earth pro on my laptop and I currently have about 15-20 miles currently plotted with the path tool, I have found that I can import the file it creates to both google My Maps, and earth online. but if my maps has a way to force navigation in that way, then perhaps that might be what I am looking for, but then again my phone might decide to condense into a black hole the very second I attempt to load the map and navigate my path. I guess my only option would be manually plotting my course for a good few months straight, then I would be able to do it all next year, or maybe I could get the google maps API to give me a path if I learn to code and it isn't destination based?
  4. I am looking for some good software options for an idea I have for a road trip, however what I have in mind will almost certainly not work too well with modern navigation... well anything, I want to drive ALL the way around my state but NEVER once leave my state, no border/state line crossing, no shortcuts to save time - NO OPTIMIZATION. I want to drive the roads that are as close/the closest to my state border for my entire drive, all the while *never once leaving my state (*some exceptions for sleeping can be made but I must return to where I was last). I am currently looking at Google Earth Pro for desktop and (hopefully) exporting/importing the path to my phone for easy navigation in my car, but I want to make sure I use the best tool for my project, especially since (I assume) all modern navigation apps will help you find the best path for you, in my case, there really only is one path I can take but with way too many points to start at. I have seen another thread talking about Google Earth pro and using paths on phones, but I don't think they had much success: Thread: google maps is literally bad and I don't have a built in power outlet to charge my laptop to help me navigate over my phones connection via tethering, and I don't want to wait up to a couple hours to charge it when I could be driving instead; and to all the older people out there saying "Oh! Just use a paper map!", I will not have anyone with me for the entire trip and I don't think I will be able to collect enough detailed maps to follow my path down the many very obscure roads that are FAR less traveled. I don't really have an answer as to why I want to do this, just a stupid idea from the bottomless pit of hellish future planning that my mind tends towards quite often. What do you think? Is there better software I could be using, or even a special site/premade course somewhere within the deep dank basement dust of the almighty search engines? TL:DR I need the most wack navigation/course plotting software out there to follow the path that stays as close to my state border lines as possible, even if that means jumping on and off of any and all freeways/highways(somewhat joking), going down dirt/gravel roads, or even through the most obscure roads that very few travel. sorry for the awful mountain of text, I am awful with wording things and explaining my ideas with few words, once again sorry. -ActuallyNotACanadian
  5. I am looking to set up a server locally and not remotely to cut costs to backup and store EVERYTHING that I have on ALL of my drives, phones, laptops, and VMs all into one place to combat my ever duplicating file/folder structures and to make everything I have easier to access as well as make backing up easier and with fewer steps of copying data around from drive to drive, and from device to device... I have God knows how many files in an obscene number of folders, and folders buried DEEEEEEEP within a MASSIVE folder-sub-folder-sub-foldersub-foldersub-folder... storage structure where I tend to get a LOT of issues with windows not liking to put up with me and my long path name bulls#!t and this makes managing, moving, transferring etc. my files a god awful pain. There has got to be a better way to manage, access and store my files, but I. NOT willing to alter ANY parts of my storage structure since I am afraid of windows absolutely crumbling and *ucking up my files, not moving them or completely losing them outright. What feature I am (desperately) searching for: - Super long path names (and filenames) - The ability to access my files from any device, doesn't need to be exactly through the built in file managers though that would be convenient. - Easy to manage and modify my files on numerous devices. - Easy to move EVERYTHING from one storage device to another for future storage expansions. - *file revisions (this is not necessary but would be a godsend for when I make yet another stupid mistake and corrupt my bootloader/ cause Linux/windows to not boot.) To explain a bit better, I want the version history of git, with the ability to modify and view my files in a file explorer/manager, on a filesystem that I can access (relatively) easily on both Windows and Linux, that I can also access remotely and be able to view & modify my files, view & manage revisions, as well as access the filesystem/service remotely from both Windows and linux (and Android). Am I just overthinking everything? I currently use a Linux VM to host my ftp server, which I log into to view and manage my files, but when it comes to copying my files I to and out of that VM it gets a little *um messy. I have 2 VHDs one for ext(#whatever) and one for NTFS, but Linux software for managing an NTFS partition while not triggering windows into thinking it's using roughly 200GB more than it actually used is a major issue... What do? Feel free to ask ANY questions to help me figure out what I need to do and what I should actually be doing.
  6. Ok, I should start off by saying that I have a good chunk of my build pretty much completed, but I am having issues planning for some expected changes in the future... So here's my situation, I absolutely love having a ton of storage, I keep backups of everything; I do mean everything, backups from Android, PC (Windows 10), and various other devices running various operating systems. I currently have about 7.5 TB of storage readily available in connected and OPERATING as in powered on storage not accounting for storage overhead or formatting overhead. I have so much storage that I have a tough time keeping all my stuff together and I have no idea how much storage I am currently using, but I expect it to be in the range of terabytes of total storage... Furthermore with my build I want to be able to switch between 2 OS installations, Windows 10, and Ubuntu (16.04.5/whatever the latest 16.04.X is), however, I want to be able to keep some storage devices inaccessible to BOTH of the OS installations... Here's the kicker: I tend to mess up my Ubuntu installations a lot; for instance, I will try to modify pretty much anything and end up rebooting for some changes to take effect, and I will end up getting stuck in an EFI shell with no way to boot into anything to try to fix my mistake. This has also happened to me while using a windows installation... I also want to be able to dual boot through the Windows dual boot menu since it looks a lot nicer. I am not even done with my many trials and tribulations, but I just don't know what I need to do or how to actually achieve my end goal. I just felt I needed to put this out there to see if anyone has any advice, or if anyone is an expert on such odd configs and can help me figure out why I am such a dunce that I can't figure out why I can't even configure a simple dual boot system without it all falling apart like my life after my parents divorce? Sorry; and I hope this is the right forum topic as I feel my issue is mostly about storage devices...
  7. The issue with my 560 is that it isn't always able to keep up with what I am trying to do, some of my games don't work too well on that card and suffer in performance and/or resolution. As for the heat, I have a pretty big Corsair case with 180 mm fans that are able to move a pretty good amount of air into the case, so I'm not too worried about heat... As for noise I can just tune it out like I do at work (LOTS of loud noise) or get some headphones that have good padding to dampen the sound... I need a pair of headphones anyways... I'm just saying I was looking for something more powerful than what I have...
  8. Wait, does the 5700 XT not have power connectors?
  9. Ok, I think I get what angle you're coming from, no, I do not plan on over locking my components, I am looking for more stability and reliability out of my PC. Not to mention the performance I will get out of an RX 5700 XT compared to an RX 560 is immense, I really don't think I need to overclock... I don't want any BSOD errors, just clean and simple running Windows.
  10. Um, yes? I think that's the only option? I got the AMD reference design that is being sold on the AMD website... Made, and sold by AMD, not the 50th anniversary card though. Why, is that a problem? (Keep in mind the card I had previously kept quite cool and draws power from the motherboard... Also it was released years ago)
  11. I have recently ordered a Radeon 5700 XT, I got it because the GPU I am using hasn't aged very well and I want better resolution and framerates, so I am going from a ln RX 560 to a 5700 XT, the issue being I need a new monitor that doesn't offer only legacy IO... I keep seeing all sorts of prices, configurations, sizes and more, however I can only accommodate possibly up to a 30" monitor, I have no idea where to look, or what to choose... I am currently using a DVI connector since that's the best port my monitor has, it is limited to 60 hz, and it is 1080P resolution... I keep seeing all sorts of prices for monitors, but what I am looking for at the very least is 2K 2560x1440p resolution, at a fairly decent refresh rate (not under 100 hz) with AMD Freesync and a connector for Display Port and HDMI. HDCP is purely optional. The issue I guess is that I tend to cross check prices from site to site to find the best price, however it seems that prices are ALL over the place for so many monitors, probably because of Amazon prime week coming up and all... I just need a recommendation for a decent monitor that will actually serve a purpose and not hold me back so much...
  12. Have you considered linux as an option? I mean, there are some wonderfully made distros out there, and with the community working together to patch vulnerabilities, it could be a great choice, especially since you shouldn't need to upgrade the hardware you already run on! Not to mention the numerous optimizations in some of the distros i've used that barely use any RAM or CPU time at all! Just saying there ARE free options available...?
  13. I wouldn't know much of anything about this, but is the BIOS on the card outdated? (I have never needed to update my GPU BIOS since my cards are from like 2014-2015...? #broke) if not my suggestion is to pray to whatever deity of higher power there is and beg for mercy...
  14. Have you tried checking the drives health with a disk checkup utility? You'll probably want to look at the SMART info for clues about what the issue is. I personally use the one from passmark... DiskCheckup by PassMark
  15. I was initially considering doing this with my laptop, however I would have lost wireless connectivity and been forced to sit in one spot with wire and dongles all over the place just to connect my laptop to an EGPU if it would've even worked at all. personally it seems like too much trouble to go through just to render games faster... personally I use an RX 560 and it works GREAT in my PC, though i'm not sure what results you would get in a laptop... or what that would even look like exactly... I can tell you what my FPS is in game for CSGO if I quick check... as for you CPU, it might be a problem, but only if you can't keep it cool enough... maybe... just remember to keep your vents open and don't block them, otherwise you might run into some issues... Also before you begin, make sure you have an ethernet port and cable ready to go otherwise you'll be stranded offline with no way out without putting the wifi card back in.
