Can't you just make a firewall rule directing all traffic from the internal ip, via the non-vpn gateway?

There is no positive / negative lead on AC cords / equipment.

Note: I am not an electrician. Also, don't try stupid things with 120/230 V AC. You will fry yourself

Talking about piracy in general, broad details, is acceptable however the posting or discussing pirated/hacked/cracked or otherwise nefariously obtained content is not. This includes Windows content, games, hackintosh, etc. Also discussions regarding ways to avoid or block legitimately installed monitoring/tracking software or the like is also not allowed.

The item he linked is simply a chassis. So software/ hardware raid is too be decided. But tbh: Hardware raid is basically software raid on dedicated antiquated pcb's/chips anyway.

RAID 5 (or Actually RAIDZ1) means that you can lose 1 drive from the vdev/pool (correct terminology escapes my head ftm). Assume drive 2 somehow fails. Your Nas box will continue to operate. If you replace the broken drive 2 with a drive (that has atleast the same capacity), you can tell the nas to reconstruct the data based on the other 3 drives.

Your decision of going with Freenas also secures you from other dangers: Bitrot / Corruption.
In your case, you got 3 drives worth of space, for your 4 drives. The other drive is used for parity. Parity is basically a small and easy to calculate piece of data that descibes how the OTHER data (your photo's, documents etc) relates to each other.
    Eg: Drive A, Drive B, Drive C, Drive P
          1111       0001      1000      0110
The P part stores the XOR outcome of all other parts.
If you know 3 out of 4 operands in a mathematical process, you can calculate the 4th.
Eg: A+3B = P. Say you lose the value of A, but still retain the knowledge of value B and P.. You can calculate what A used to be.

ZFS (the filesystem behind Freenas) will periodically verify that ALL data on drives is what it originally was, by running the maths on each and every bit/byte. You'll be protected against 1 bit going bad in a drive. With RAIDZ2 - RAIDZ3, you would be protected against 2 bits going bad. But, the chances of 2 bits going bad in your case will be astronomically small.

As for your HBA, not sure if it's cheaper, but try Ebay for a used LSI 9211-8i. You're gonna have to flash em both to something called IT mode, since Freenas NEEDS bit level access to the drives.

CPU choise wise, I also figured that his full fledged 8core could probably be too much.
However, I feel you may be over estimating the power required by Plex. A simple Avaton C2750 (8 core atom type processor) is already enough for 2 full fat 1080 streams.

Have you payed something with your paypall before? It will only accept your bank details / connection when you have made 1 purchase. If you just opened a new account and put in your bank details, they will not process the transfer. This probably to avoid bots creating accounts and immediately being able to send money from a cracked bank account. Just wire transfer some money into Paypal and then pay something (can be as insignificant and paying 1c, I think. Should solve it.

Technically you could hand each of the renters just a /24 subnet eg: 192.168.X.0/24. For non-techie renters that should suffice. The only problem I see is that the renters will either have double NAT (so potentially blocking some services) or they answer to you as their full-on ISP.

Btw, SSID's are just wireless networks. AP's like Ubiquity's Unify are IIRC capable of broadcasting multiple SSID's for different networks. You really shouldn't have 2 independent parties (you and a renter eg) on the same subnet. This will cause various security problems such as: You seeing their devices in your network list, A rather small IP range for each (254 / 4 =~ 63 IP's for each) as well as you needing quite a beefy router to maintain all the states.

This is true. If the machine is off, the drives aren't even spinning. You won't be able to adress em.
Not sure if it's gonna work on Freenas. But most if not all wired nics, support WOL (Wake On Lan). You could perhaps see if you could make a backup script that first wakes up the pc (from off), then backups the data you want, and then turn it back off via command sent to the pc (http://ccm.net/faq/9200-shutdown-or-wake-up-a-pc-on-a-lan).

So you installed Plex on the 252 machine, right?
    A. Are you sure plex is running on 32400. If unsure try running a portscan on the pc you installed Plex on. A good tool for that is Nmap.
    B. I assume the laptop is running on wifi. Check if the wifi is on the same subnet as your Plex machine. IE: 192.168.X.Y. X should be the same, Y can be different.

Wow, the opinions are really different from each other. After some research I think the difference in price won't be THAT big, I think I'm just going to buy those parts in the Netherlands so I know nothing weird is going on with the packages. Thank you very much for the comment!
As I said to @KOMTechAndGaming, after visiting that website the price won't differenciate too much, it's not worth risking it just to get the parts a little cheaper. Thank you very much and greetings to Belgium, your Gasstations are really cheap, we always gas-up our car over there lol.
