WallacEngineering got a reaction from RetroSmoo in Gaming PC Tutorial and FPS Explained
This is a guide for anyone new to PC building who would like to know what FPS numbers mean, why they are important, and what to look for when considering your first gaming PC.

So what is FPS? Why does it matter? Why do people choose PC over consoles for more FPS and more settings? What does it all mean?

Well, FPS - Frames Per Second. In reality, what video is - is a stream of still images sent to your screen very quickly. When you watch TV, what you are seeing is actually 26-27 different STILL images per second that depicts motion.

Consoles like Xbox and PlayStation are generally limited to 60 FPS maximum, and while this is fine, you can have a more premium gaming experience on PC with higher FPS and more settings options and customization available. Plus, you don't have to pay for PlayStation/Xbox Live membership for online gaming which is a pretty nice bonus.

Most games on PC these days have the ability to run what is called a "Benchmark" - a test that evaluates the overall performance of a given game. And even if a benchmark is unavailable, there is ALWAYS a way to display your current FPS while playing, and you can assess your performance and tweak your settings that way.

Keep in mind that some games are more demanding than others. A good way to judge what hardware is right for you is to share what games you play most. Plenty of testing is done on PC Hardware when it comes to market and what hardware you need for what games you play with your desired level of performance should be easy to determine - just ask any PC enthusiast and they should be able to tell you.

PC games come with settings presets that set all graphical settings to a predetermined level for a given overall experience. "High" Graphics settings presets are considered the standard for PC enthusiasts as it gives you high visual fidelity and detail without needlessly throwing away performance. "Very High"/"Ultra" settings are nice but usually cost a massive amount of performance for only small differences in overall image quality.

So what numbers are important, what should you look for, and what are ideal numbers? Well, the two most important metrics in gaming performance are "Average FPS" and "1% Lows". Average FPS is the average framerate of the given test, while 1% lows show when the PC struggles with a particularly demanding area or images. The range of different Average FPS experiences is summarized below:

20 FPS or Less: Unplayable - The game will be so studdery, slow, and unresponsive that you will genuinely not enjoy the experience, and will probably stop playing.

30 FPS: Not Very Fun, but Tolerable for Some. This will feel sluggish and fairly slow, especially when demanding areas drop your FPS under 30, but it can be played if absolutely necessary.

45 FPS: Playable - While not very responsive or smooth, it can be somewhat enjoyable, especially if dips in performance from demanding areas are occasional and don't drop the FPS into the 30's very often.

60 FPS: The Basic Standard - at 60 FPS your game will appear visually smooth but you may notice the responsiveness between your inputs and what happens on screen is not quite as nice as you would like. When demanding areas drop the FPS into the low 50's and high 40's, these moments are certainly not ideal either.

75 FPS - The Bang For Buck - At 75 FPS, a Game not only appears very visually smooth, but the responsiveness is also quite nice and fast enough to satisfy most gamers. Even demanding areas that drop FPS into the low 60's don't really ruin the experience and this is exactly why entry-level budget gaming PC monitors are 75-Hz rated (Hz is basically the max FPS the screen itself can display, also known as "refresh rate").

90 FPS: The Enthusiast Standard - PC enthusiasts usually game on PC for the advanced performance over a console. 90 FPS and beyond is where this difference truly shines. At 90 FPS, your game will feel incredibly responsive, basically instantaneous, and will remain very responsive even in demanding areas that drop FPS into the 70's.

100 FPS - The Premium/Ideal Target. 100 FPS Average may not seem a lot different than 90 FPS, but the important difference is that even the most demanding areas of a game with the biggest drops will likely keep the FPS above 75. This means that the game will remain responsive and the experience will remain premium and smooth pretty much no matter what happens. I recommend 90-100 FPS Average for most people.

120 FPS: The Enthusiast High-End/Flagship Experience - My personal favorite way to play. Why? Well, while I will admit I don't really see any gains in the gaming experience above about 100 FPS; if you game runs at 120 average, then your lows will probably remain above 90 FPS meaning your entire gaming experience is as premium as it gets - So fast and responsive that you truly feel no desire to go any further even in the most demanding areas of a game.

144 FPS and Beyond: Overkill - Many Gaming Monitors are rated at 144 Hz and they are affordable for most and the perfect choice for most gamers. However, there is no need for your game to actually run this fast. Linus himself has shown in several tests that even professional E-Sports gamers - people who get paid an actual salary to play video games - have no performance improvement when going beyond 144 Hz/FPS. Some people may claim they feel a difference and they are welcome to their opinion, but there is no way for them to prove that claim, and someone new to PC gaming certainly doesn't need to be worrying about such things.

So there you go, now you can decide what level of performance you want your Gaming PC to achieve, and you can now use this knowledge to ask someone experienced with PCs (we are all happy to help you here at LTT Forums) to recommend a given pre-built PC or recommend hardware for you to build your own. This is the very first decision towards getting your first gaming PC. Welcome aboard!

WallacEngineering got a reaction from Mark Kaine in GTA VI will Probably Perform Quite Poorly
Steve from Gamers Nexus has just reviewed Nvidia's new RTX 4070-Super. In the benchmarks he states that GTA V is still included because it still scales on modern cards.

If you ask me, this near-decade old game still being demanding can only mean that GTA VI will probably be one of the most demanding games ever released.

With performance on GTA V still this relevant and demanding, I wonder just how low the FPS will go in GTA VI. Im sure even my Radeon RX 7900-XTX will have a hard time pushing triple-digit FPS at my 3440x1440p resolution with a mix of High and Ultra settings. Just something random to think about 🤔

Me: Sees "Coming in 2025" at the end of the trailer

    Me: "F*** You Rockstar"

TBH the 40-50% I saw was a mix of games, some with RT on, some with it off.  Really, I just jumped on the 4090 because I didn't want an out-of-stock issue to happen again.  No AMD card was even going to be available for comparison for months.  I was frequently running out of VRAM on the 3080 after going to 4k.  Plus, I made more mining off the 3080 than the 4090 cost.

Also, there is a wider gap in general at 4k than 1440p.

Ah ya thats pretty nice fanless is sweet. I do like the middle ground my Seasonic 850W-Platinum offers tho which is the Hybrid mode. Below 400 watts it simply shuts the fan off all-together and has a full fan curve from silent to 100% depending on load above 400 Watts. But this is a full-sized ATX PSU in a standard ATX Mid-Tower (Lian Li LanCool 216)

That is the good news with the RTX 4070 Non-Ti is that its very efficient. In most games it will rarely even touch 200 Watts.

Guys, regardless of what happened the merch is quality. Floatplane, sure, thats just wasted money. But the Merch is very nice at LMG.

Look guys, the main point from GN was that LMG is producing videos way too fast and the reason thats bad is because the entire point of the channel was founded upon the idea of tech reviews so getting the reviews wrong is undermining the channel's entire existence.

Everything else is just drama, forget about it and move on.

Actually no, inaccurate testing and misrepresenting products have been complained about in comments of LMG videos for some time now.

Of course the whole Billet Labs thing SOUNDS worse when you use words like THEFT or STEAL but there was definitely some misunderstanding involved.

As for Steve not knowing all the facts - Ya you are right he didn't, but its also not his fault:

A.) LMG would have ignored Steve or said its none of his business as they have been every other time he has reached over the past 2 years and so as a result...

B.) He never would have gotten the full story to begin with. Both Billet and Linus Omitted details - so how the hell is Steve supposed to be 100% accurate when he can't gain access to 100% of the information?

The video's public release is what got the truth to finally come out so it still would have been the exact same situation had GN reached out anyways unless he specifically used a thread - "Im gonna go public if LMG boes not tell me the truth" - Which hell no, Steve would NEVER be that guy.

Steve would still have only gotten some information from Billet Labs themselves and we now know that they lied about it to attack LMG for some reason so basically there was only one way for this situation to go down.

Steve makes mistakes like anyone else like how he kinda fumbled around a bit in the second video regarding Linus's 5-Year-Old response because he was in such shock and awe he couldn't keep it together.

However, despite that human error - Going Public was still the best move. Nothing would have changed otherwise because LMG would have continued to ignore criticism and would have continued to slowly destroy their own reputation.

Unfortunately you are correct about the Madison situation - it simply adds to the Chaos and despite the fact the entire thing is BS and LMG technically doing nothing wrong in this situation, people are absolute Hyenas these days with drama and scavenge every little bit they can.

This kind of crap is why I hate drama and hate the human race in general these days. What has happened to us? Everyone these days seems to be a complete ass hole, nobody shows respect or care for their fellow man anymore, and every single little thing is all about money anymore - even family matters.

Yes, there are resident trolls, but most of the time this is a very chill place. Most people here out side of certain circumstances act fairly maturely. Don’t let this set your mindset on the forums. There’s plenty of us who for a long time haven’t agreed with LTT or LMG and hardly ever watch any of their content. The “core” of the forums is “come from the videos, stay for the community.” Come back in a couple weeks and the whole mood will be different when the trolls settle back down.

I legitimately thought that Reddit and the Youtube comment section on LTT videos was bad and a toxic echo chamber, but I'm starting to realize that the forums are just as bad. Imagine wasting your time writing replies on the forums just to incite negative responses from other users, I'm sure your parents must be proud of what you've accomplished, because you've sure gotten me!

Also in regards to your other comment, no, I don't think it's childish outrage to expect people on a online platform to act with common decency towards one another.
But apparently we're at the point where making fun of sexual harassment, giving people death threats and being toxic is the norm on online forums, or rather on the Linus Tech Tips forum.

I'm not outraged, I'm disappointed that people who are at the age where they can have children act like this without any form of personal restraint. Apparently we've forgotten that there are people of flesh and blood behind the screen who have feelings.

I think you need to take the tin foil hat off 🤣. Madison jumped in on it herself, she used the GN thing to her advantage, its so obvious its not even funny.

GN and Madison have probably never even had contact. Its just the same typical thing we see in life consistently. What makes you think anything is different here?

GN stated facts, and he did the same thing to Linus that he does to ASUS and every other company. Get over it - there is no conspiracy here and you are clearly the naive one for even thinking so.

Except its probably the truth. Don't pretend ur on some kind of moral high ground, grow up.

She literally waited to piggy-back off the GN thing. Grow a brain and think for yourself, don't just go along with what society wants, society is completely stupid these days anyways.

How many times has a woman come forward with sexual assault allegations towards a company or musician just for everyone to find out it was consensual and the woman was just attempting to make some money off said celebrity? I understand that isn't ALWAYS the case but it is the case most of the time.

Do you really think if such seriously f***ed up s*** was happening at LMG, that they wouldn't have had a serious allegation or multiple a long time ago?

Now Im not saying LMG in innocent in everything - from the very beginning of this thread I have been agreeing with GN and the facts they have brought forward and I think LMG needs some serious work and to back off trying to make so many videos so quickly. But this whole Madison thing is just some he-said-she-said-bulls*** and you know it.

Now if Im proven wrong then that really sucks and LMG will have lost every ounce of my respect, and they have already lost a fair bit of it. But I seriously doubt its a real thing. This crap happens all the time ans its always just that - crap.

For those of you still thinking GN just did this for the money - more evidence that you couldn't be more wrong.

Steve could have continued with the drama and digging into LTT with more "public beatdown" videos but look at that, that didn't happen now did it?

What is today's video? About new technology coming to aid testing and ensure greater accuracy than ever before.

Steve literally doesn't give two f***s about the drama, its actually pretty hilarious that he just casually ignores all the BS and continues straight on with the next topic:

Dude, Steve has literally been a guest on LTT like 4 or 5 times over the years. They had fun, they might not be life BFFs but they were pretty cool with eachother for quite some time.

IDK why people aren't aware of this.
