How long these systems last will vary from person to person, depending on the games they want to play and software they run, and how those programs are developed will have an impact aswell

I'm pretty confident in AMD ability to overcome or at least stay on par with Intel, they did way more progress than Intel in the last 10 years, with many new concepts and features (more cores for gaming chips, durable platform, chiplet design, 3D cache, better efficiency...), Intel was struggling to keep up from 2018 to 2021 until their "new" hybrid architecture that isn't that creative (just smaller/slow cores to avoid reaching excessive power draw when adding cores...still no Intel chip has more than 8 "full" cores...)

It is impressive how the number of cores in CPU has increased in recent years (thanks to AMD).
Six years ago (2017), Intel's highest-end processor (Core I7) was the 7700K which is 4C/8T. It has been like that for years.
Today, 4C/8T is the entry level (Core I3) and highest-end (13900K) has 24 Cores.

Long story short: I've been using a Ryzen 5 2400G on a B350 motherboard, with 16Gb of DDR4 3200 RAM and a 4Gb RX580 for about 5 years. I never had anything to complain about, but I felt it was time to upgrade a couple of things.

I just installed a Ryzen 5 5600 and an RX6600 (both "non X"), keeping everything else as it was: performance has DOUBLED overnight, in both productivity and gaming tests. I mean 100+ percent more performance with just a mid tier CPU and a mid/low tier GPU. And this is while using one of the "worst" chipsets to pair a 5000 series Ryzen with!

Now, to be honest I don't remember seeing this much improvement, not only using the same physical socket but the same chipset as well. MAYBE in the Pentium II / III era you could have similar results swapping a low tier P2 with a high frequency P3 but that was over 20 years ago.

A platform allowing this kind of uplift with two simple drop in upgrades after 5 years, to me is nothing short of amazing!

I think it's very possible AM4 will go down in history as the best socket ever. This is sort of sad, though, because that means that I expect AMD and Intel will never give consumers something this valuable ever again, but we should all be happy to have had AM4 while it lasted.

Congratulations on the upgrade! I hope it gives you another 5+ years of use.

Thing is the 5800X3D is especially good for 1080p gaming, less for higher res
But really pairing that with a RX580 is kinda wasteful
Really with 500EUR + maybe 250 for your rig you'll be a bit short for a new rig if you want to play HL and CP2077 comfortably...
But if you can up the budget to 550EUR you can get a 5600 and a 6650XT (faster than a 3060, double perf from your 580), that would be a good combo

What specific motherboard do you have? From what I understand, Ryzen 5000 support on 300-series boards can be spotty.

IF your motherboard supports the Ryzen 5600, I'd get one of those and see how the GPU keeps up. It's probably going to hold you back a bit, but you should be able to swing a much newer midrange card and stay within budget.

It's not like AM4 is completely useless now that AM5 is out. (And Intel's probably going to change sockets next generation anyway, so it's not like their current platform is future-resistant either.)

A Ryzen 7 5800X3D might be a good call, max out the platform. Otherwise, Ryzen 5000 series processors are far from disappointing with performance, while not being the newest generation they still pack quite a punch for gamers.

On that budget I'd choose option 1. You can always upgrade the GPU later, ram is unlikely to become your bottleneck before you come to replace the CPU again (imo) and as for not having an upgrade path, the only way to get that atm is AM5.

However, as @Needfuldoersays, check compatability of your motherboard and the 5600 first.

If it turns out that option 1 isn't an option, then upgrade cpu+mobo+ram or gpu depending on which needs the upgrade.

Yes, use various cloning software like Macrium Reflect for free, or use the ones that come with your drive... Samsung Data Migration for Sammy drives, or Acronis for Crucial, etc.

8TB of SSD, a little pricey.  If it's just data like movies/pics, use HDD and save a shitload.

    ^^^ this.
If AMD will actually support the platform for 5 years as they did with AM4, this is the obvious choice right now.
I guess a Ryzen 7 7700 "non-X" would be a wiser choice, or even the 7600 "non-X", which should perform a hell of a lot better than the 2700 (despite 25% less cores).

    I'd go with option #1.
Much more cost efficient and you'd be able to really max out that 3060.
If you're OK with your storage and GPU performance, you can easily upgrade CPU and mainboard and squeeze another 2 / 3 years from your build.

This is precisely what I was talking about. I paid for a piece of software, so I just want to be able to use it whenever and wherever I want.

If you can find one with a i5-4590T that is a 4c4t, should be similar price.

This type of mini office desktops are fantastic, low power consumption, no noise and a very low failure rate. The Dell, HP and Lenovo models are very similar, just get the one you can get for the best price. I have a HP one with a 4590T and 16GB ram (had some DDR3 lying around, would be totally fine with 8) as my media PC, bought it new in 2015 and see no need to upgrade anytime soon

Yup that's fine, I have 2 HPs with 4570T and 4590T, one's my media player and one's been my server for 2 years until I upsized.
One good thing on these T SKU based business machines is low power consumption, great for a small server.
