Gerardo Buenrostro got a reaction from soldier_ph in Global chip shortage: Supply chain hoarding now a factor, says TSMC chief
In an interview for Time, TSMC Chairman Mark Liu, suggested that the global chip shortage is now being exacerbated by dealers stockpiling chips “who-knows-where in the supply chain”.

    My thoughts
This again is bad news for anyone who wants or needs to get their hands on any new (or by trickle down, used) piece of technology, name it video card, car or any in between. And this extra variable of why the shortage exists is even harder to solve because it deepens speculative behavior.

In other markets commodities have laws intended to stop speculative hoarding and other similar behavior. Lets see if regulations need to be taken to try to stop or disincentivize this practice.

The only chips I hoard are Doritos.

    To prevent price decreases? 🤷‍♂️

Samsung got caught doing this a couple years ago but with DRAM I think. I'm also a bit skeptical as my company is struggling with supply internally unless the hoarding is at the very top level at the fabs. It'll all come crashing down in 6 months when the investigation comes out lmao

Desktop PCs with TB3 are pretty rare.
Given the cost of adding a TB3 chipset to a monitor it makes quite some sense not to include it in a gaming monitor when almost nobody who'd be likely to buy the monitor will have TB3 on their machine.

Gerardo Buenrostro reacted to DDrawer in 4K @144Hz vs 1440P @260Hz
Assuming you are looking to keep this monitor for multiped video cards down the line (keeping the monitor 5+ years), I don't see why either of those wouldn't be a good choice. Sure, maybe the cards out now can't hit 144hz in most games at 4k ultra, but they can with settings turned down. Also, it doesn't matter if it can't peg 144hz, you still benefit from higher refresh rate assuming you are able to push over 60 frames. Finally, maybe you can't peg 144hz right now on ultra, but next generation of GPU's or the next will, and unless you plan on upgrading your monitor every time you make a GPU purchase to perfectly align with the capability of the GPU, then I don't see what's wrong with over buying the monitor a little bit now to avoid making a second monitor purchase in the future.

As for 144hz 4k vs 260hz 1440p that's going to be personal preference depending on what types of games you play. I don't play competitive e-sports type games so I just want the crispest most beautiful image I can get. 4k is where I would go. But do keep in mind that unless you are running a top tier GPU from this generation you may be struggling to get 60 frames without turning settings down on certain games (the vast average of games will easily sit in the 60-100 frames area).

Nope, you can have a diode bridge on the power supply output and simply use the same voltage as USB-C for your intermediary.  It would add, maybe $10 (after retail markup) to the total cost of the monitor.

The power connection is also bi-directional, meaning you can dock your laptop by simply plugging it into the USB-C connection and skipping the charger if the monitor is connected to power.

Two features for the price of one.

Thunderbolt (which is what I assume you meant) is Intel and they like to have full control of it. I don't think either AMD or Nvidia are interested in handing any control over their tech to Intel.

Definitely NOT. If you're a new parent, you're not wearing headphones, let alone noise cancelling headphones. the second I put headphones on is the second my son decides to run down the hall and smack into his sister, full head on collision and blood coming out of his forehead. I'm speaking from experience. I'd show a gruesome pic, but it's on my phone not my computer and it might get taken down anyway for the amount of blood
