A computer and a server is basicly the same thing. A PC = Personal Computer. A server is just a system that serves content. Such as files for a file server. The problem with using a laptop as a server will however be heat, the laptop is not build for this purpose and it will kill it quite faster.

Can I use a raspberry 4 24/7?
AbsoluteFool replied to No_Trash's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
I run an automated FFmpeg script to transcode all my videos on a rpi b+ without any extra cooling it's alive even after 8 months. Wouldn't suggest using a rpi for this though... -
1. Host is a server/computer with filezilla server or similar installed. 2. You're on a PC i'd assume? A PC can be a host as long as it serves something. 3. Yes you can use a domain name when you point the domain to the IP of the PC or server that runs a service. This will then be called a hostname.

Web server should only be TCP port 80 and/or 443. TPC External post 80 - 80, TCP Internal port 80 - 80. Also you should enable hairpinning so you'll actually get access from your external IP.

Shell In a Box inside WordPress
AbsoluteFool replied to YouDontHaveToKnow's topic in Programs, Apps and Websites
use SSH? It's basicly the same and less trouble. -
RAIDZ-1 would be RAID5. Wouldn't trueNAS or the software you are using tell you this? That you can lose Xdrives before data is lost?

Why would he need permission to break into something the ISP have already gived him access to? The term ethical is way to subjective and far too often missused. The best rule is if you do not own it do not touch it.

Wordpress add external stuff
AbsoluteFool replied to Spoiled_Kitten's topic in Programs, Apps and Websites
You should download the code https://github.com/donatj/Circle-Generator/archive/master.zip Upload it to your website and then use an iframe like i said before. I really hessitate to give you a clear answer because i think it will be more acheiving for you to actually make it yourself. Think of my response as a very poorly written user manual. Anyways. I'll check back in a few days to see if you figured it out, if not i'll give a full proper manual on how to do it. Good luck! -
Virtualised Home Server / Developer Workstation
AbsoluteFool replied to Fletcher Blight's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Honestly if you are afraid of using power a single system wont really help you much. A computer that is on idle doesen't really pull that much power. Powering on and off anything that is a server is generally missing the whole point with using a so called "server". From what i understand you want a computer for your development, which should be strong. And you want a plex server for movies. The simple way to do this with thinking of power consumption is to eliminate the need to have things online. A virtual envoriment wont really help you here. Even if you power off virtual machines or w/e you choose to use you will use X amount of power for idle. The best solution is to use a Raspberry pi or something as plex which barely uses a few watts. Then keep your desktop as development/gaming or w/e you do for that.- 4 replies

Cable management for server
AbsoluteFool replied to Killerseadog's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
I've actually seen these many times. While i like the concept. For most people they are just a waste of money. When a cable fail you need to replace the cable cartigde which costs more than a cable obviously.. But sure! If cosmetics is all you care about have a go at it. -
Is this a self-hosted lisence of invision? If so i don't have the files to upload. However i can give you some ftp details to one of my servers and you can see if the files will upload there before you give me anything?
-
I don't think giving away login info is a good idea. What are you trying to upload? I might be able to help you with away around using ftp.
-
Have you tried the web ftp in cPanel? It's hard to give an answer without seeing what's going on.
-
That's a question with quite a bit variables. Can be your internet connection that's unstable. The host machine. Or just many people uploading stuff at once to the host.
-
I'll probably be able to help you here, and share some knowledge at the same time.

Easy websites blocking software
AbsoluteFool replied to jano_rajmond's topic in Programs, Apps and Websites
Wouldn't that be against the point as they all have phones? Anyways your router probably have this ability.. -
Well. I don't see why torrenting something that is accepted as a free ubuntu iso. Anyways. Here are some basic info about download speeds. 1. Your computer & what it is doing at the time. 2. Your HDD/SSD and eventually any RAID configuration. 3. Any possible restrictions your ISP sets. (unlikely but i thought i'd mention it.) 4. Where the server you're downloading from is. 5. The connection of the server you are downloading from. 6. And also the drives of the server you are downloading from. And a few other minor things.. But the basics is enough. It's actually a very simple. You locate the weakest link and you got the problem. So for example: If your iso download is slower than a game from steam. This is most likely something between 4 and 6.

I got no idea where you read this, but this is completely wrong. Plex uses FFmpeg for transcoding, and FFmpeg have support for ALL CPUs. I literally know of no CPU FFMpeg will not work on, or any transcoding for that matter.

Of course they could.. But you would go with a loss. Unless you want to spend your life savings on it.. The question i think you are asking is if it is possible to make a game as one person. Yes, even huge MMO, MMORPG get made by single people. The question is how much time are you expecting to spend on this. When you've figured that out and figured out what money you will lose by not having a full time job for example you will know the price. Not to disencourage. I do self come from the same perspective. After hitting wall after wall after wall, i've only been taught that everything is possible. Even doing the most insane things completely alone.

CPU and motherboard suggestions
AbsoluteFool replied to DaButterGamer's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Just a tiny advice.. Last time i heard someone say "no budged, it can be as high as needed" that guy got slapped in the face with a router for a million dollars.. Be careful what you wish for... Anyways! micro-ATX equals to one socket so any CPU with high clock speed. And as most people recomend these days.. 32GB of RAM. Yeah 16 will do.. But depends on your server load.. You can simply think about these kind of system as a average gaming pc. -
Well factroring in hours slarary, vaication money, office, office supplies, probably coffee machine maybe a dining room to have breaks. Then not to forget the office itself, power, computers, i guess you can get away with using free software so not gonna say anything here. But as you can imagine one person would cost you quite a bit an hour. The thing most people forget is all factors and variables of actually running a company, they think "holy sdhdksj" what a redicilous price!!! it's in reallity just lack of education or understanding that companies that hire people have alot to pay for. And the feee they take for a service needs to cover these expences. So yeah.. Hourly? I'd say a person would probably cost you... I don't really know the rates where you are.. So i'm just not gonna guess, then you would pay their taxes on that. So you would need an accountant, pay their salary, and have them fill their own salary and taxes vaication money etc etc so on and so forth. If you really want to know check up how to start a business.. You'll find it out alot easier... Sorry lol

troubleshooting Issues with "LANCache"
AbsoluteFool replied to TinsellyCone241's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Are you setting 10.0.0.X as your DNS on your pc? That's not a nameserver or DNS server.. -
You asking how to get a free .org domain or free web hosting???? These things are completely different and both have a cost of hardware and operation. Just because the domain extension is .org doesen't mean it is free. .org domains is a TLD which alike every other TLD costs money to own (For everyone). Hosting on the other hand will always have a price. While you can point DNS record from a domain to any hosting machine that you want (without moving the domain from the choosen registrar). You will in some cases still pay for the DNS services. To be completely honest. You shouldn't take a job like this without mentioning that anything.org will cost you something. The system to hold your website will also cost you something. That's the same as convincing people to think that owning a domain is the same as having the right for a specific trademark, which it is not. And to be fair. If i where you i would contact your friend and inform him/her about this before you move any future.
