IT SysAdmin here. A large part of being in IT is being competent in solving problems that you don't know how to solve. That involves a lot of Googling.

However, this is definitely not typical of a qualified IT person.

If you have any way to actively cool the router that might help. DDWRT made my router run hot as hell. I used a laptop cooler I had laying around and plugged it in to the routers USB port. Found it ran much cooler. The lack of support is why I choose to buy a new router. Because I was not sure when DDWRT was going to update the firmware due to the security issues found in WPA 2 last year or so.

hmmm... yeah I seriously doubt most people will pay attention if they are allowed to hand off driving to the computer.

Just a personal opinion... I don't understand the fascination with drivers passing off control... I once drove a rental car with adaptive cruise control and some sort of lane assistance steering control... I couldn't turn that crap off fast enough.

Seems like many companies are ditching the USB flash drive "network storage" due to security concerns. IMO good riddance to it. An off the shelf consumer router USB port isn't going to come close to the performance of even the cheapest NAS out there. Unless you're experiencing performance issues on your internet connection, I would say put your money toward a NAS instead. It will be more secure and way more versatile.

If you need better coverage, speed and security I would say yes. USB ports on routers from my reading in to it, can be hit or miss. Ive personally never used the USB ports on any router I have had, because of issues you describe. To me if you want network storage, id look at something Ethernet based.

My biggest concern with a 6 year old router is if they still do firmware updates. Last year WPA2 was cracked. So if that hasnt been patched, Id be concerned. Its actually the main reason I upgraded to a better router myself.

That's to be expected, really -- Google and card vendors can't trust the software once it's been rooted, since they can't know what you've done behind the scenes.  It's a similar situation with enterprise software, they need to know certain safeguards are in place.

I believe Android pay is the old app...way back when those features split from the Google Wallet app. It is now Google Pay.

Here is an article about it.

Honestly, I agree. The idea of going down the highway at 80mph (which was the posted limit btw) and literally not controlling the car just didn't sit right with me. I turned it off and just drove normally for the whole trip. I felt more comfortable that way. Plus we for sure would have crashed because a tractor trailer hit a deer and a car behind him stopped short to avoid crashing into him. So I quickly ducked into the left lane (thankfully it was open) and got out fine. I don't think the car could have avoided that, hell I wouldn't even trust the Tesla to do that.

There are other places that mention it, but that's one that covers a lot of stuff.
Epic Game Store is looking into your Steam Cloud game list, play history, possibly friends list and other programs too - all without asking the end user - (I'd be totally fine with it if they did - but they didn't).
    It also goes against GDPR.

Yeah, 5.25" bays are so useless, I designed a computer case with 14 of them ?. All but three of them are already occupied and I haven't even finished bullding the computer yet.

I prefer using a bulit in ODD since I use one often enough, mostly for ripping, to not want to deal with the hassle of digging out a portable drive, hooking it up, finding a place to put it, then putting it away when I'm finished. Also, the built in ones are usually faster than the portables.

Razor Blade got a reaction from kelvinhall05 in 2x Dell R510, What to do with them?
The X5670 and X5675 are wonderful CPUs The only concern I would have about putting higher TDP in the 12 bay is CPU2 might get a bit warm if you load the server up with SAS drives and still want to fold with it. Probably would be fine but just the way those R510s are designed, CPU2 and it's RAM get cooled last. It is still a pretty good system, Originally I wish I bought a R510 instead of the R710 when first starting out. Not only do you get more HDD spots with the 8 or 12 bay but I like the PSU design better and if you get a rail kit, face plate, and/or cable management system for an R510 I believe those items also fit the R720 and R730 chassis as well so you wouldn't even have to re-buy those things if you upgrade to one of those models in the future.

What really sucks is trying to find the heat sinks at a reasonable price...IMO having to paying more for the heat sink than the CPU you're cooling is insane... Especially a proprietary heat sink for an aging system (it isn't like they're collectable lol). Most times I've seen R510 heat sinks on ebay for about $25 each but several have best offer so I would suggest taking advantage of that.

Yeah I wanted a R7xx but I get my stuff at my old school district surplus sale so I have to settle with older mid end equipment, but at $30 a system I cant complain.

Thanks for mentioning the heat sinks, I totally would have forgotten to get them when I buy the CPUs. Not too surprised they charge so much for them, anything that is associated with servers is always expensive because they think big corporations are the only ones that buy the stuff. Its the ECC ram prices that really grinds my gears.

Only outside of New Zealand and Australia, international news should have a better look at our and Australia's coverage of the event. If you have no new information then simply say nothing, there is no need to latch on to irrelevant information just because you have nothing else. There is other news going on, cover that until there is something worthwhile and important.

Doesn't help either when news stations bring on so called experts, with work experience in national security agencies, that don't know that Australia and New Zealand are different countries separated by 4000+km of ocean.

Razor Blade got a reaction from Gasbak in Broken and burnt pins in sata power connector compent of my HDD
I've seen this happen before with crap-tastic power connectors but usually it is the 12V side the melts... Some drives don't even need the 3.3V line so you might be able to plug in a power connector to see if the drive still powers on. Just be very careful with those other two 3.3V pins that are sticking out so you don't end up bending those into the ground as well.

If it is a no-go my honest opinion is if the drive has important data that isn't backed up, I always suggest looking at data recovery services to people. For something like this where it is just a power plug failure, it might not even be that expensive.
