At the moment, I'm less concerned with the quality of people's passwords, and more with whether or not people use password managers.

That's what I do...or use a simple encryption method to make a password out of random words.

here is a better question, how many people use password generators?

Have I been threatened? Yes many times. I had someone on YouTube threaten to find and kill me. That was about...oh... 8 or 9 years ago? Granted, I've become much less an instigator since then but have yet to open the front door to some moron that dedicated his life to find me and kill me.

Just an FYI those bezels are mostly to keep morons from messing with your server (they can lock)...if you decide to get one with a front bezel on the T710 it is super easy to pop off. Just a latch at the top of the case and it comes right off for drive access. Quite a few eBay sellers tend not to even include a bezel with surplus servers which makes an 11th gen tower look very...incomplete. The T320 on the other hand looks fine with or without the front bezel.

Razor Blade got a reaction from Bensemus in VICE had YouTube shutdown a gaming channel with same name without contacting the owner
Vice had their YouTube channel since 2005. Even if the gaming channel owner did not mean to use the same channel name, he wouldn't have an appeal case IMO. What is slightly disturbing to me is how YouTube is terminating the channel without any chance to fix the problem. If they're doing this for a channel name violation, how long before channels are terminated for other violations?

I'm probably not the best person to ask... but if I were going to spec out a new FreeNAS server for myself this very moment, I would go after an i3-8100 (coffee lake), Gigabyte C246-WU4, and 32GB of Crucial DDR4-2400 unbuffered ECC memory.

    Here are Amazon links:
    CPU
    Motherboard
    Memory

All should set you back about $550 (maybe less if you can find good deals). It would be a decent "heart" of the system with decent expandability (up to 64GB RAM with that motherboard). With the rest of the budget, you would have to find a case, HBA. and a PSU that suits your needs...those choices will depend more on what you're planning to add.

EDIT: I linked the wrong memory... it should be fixed now. The ECC memory is quite a bit more expensive so that sucks... if you want to stay in the $550 you could run one 16GB DIMM instead of the two DIMMs.

Software RAID is where the volume management is handled by the CPU.  In Hardware RAID the storage controller has its own CPU for parity calculation and sector level data distribution.  Its the same as the difference between software 3D rendering and hardware 3D rendering.

OS based RAID (volume only management) falls into software RAID.  RAID on most consumer boards is the same, and this is why it is dependent on a driver for proper functionality.  Most modern servers also use this approach.

In SS (on server setups), ZFS, and GlusterFS the splitting of data is done on the cluster level instead of the sector level.  This allows more robust error detection as well as very easy and fast expansion/shrinkage of volume size with the system online.  SS, ZFS, and GlusterFS can also pool disks from different systems together over a WAN/LAN/SAN where RAID can not (unless you want to create an unreliable and slow storage array).

RAID is a way of making a virtual disk from physical disks. It isn't a file system.

EDIT: clarifying RAID isn't the combined file system and logical disk manager ZFS is...

Razor Blade reacted to Mira Yurizaki in which to buy from these 2? Black-6TB or baraguda pro 8TB?
Given that they both are 7,200 RPM drives with 256 MB of cache and a 5-year warranty (which really doesn't mean anything), assuming no other features, then the 8TB drive will be better for bandwidth because it has higher data density.

EDIT: But it's very slight if at all. It's not going to be leagues better.

They're both good drives, will perform almost identically (time them if you want) and last a very long time.

The Seagate is higher capacity, more energy efficient, and that model comes with a 2 year data recovery service. That is what I would go with (personally). The WD black offers a 227MB/s speed vs Seagate's 220MB/s...now real world, probably not enough to notice IMO.

The problem I have here is that VICE is trademarking an english word. Though this is not surprising given how The Verge did the same thing....

The other problem I have is that Youtube said "sure, ok, yes sir, we'll remove it right away per your instructions." You SHOULD NOT be able to trademark a single friggin word. VICE Media... thats another story. But this is an english word people.

I don't want to talk you out of something and like I said I don't have experience with that particular product. Only experience I do have is word of mouth and past internet research. However there are plenty of proven options out there. For example If a physical network cable run isn't an option, a powerline adapter might be. It uses the electric line in your house to connect devices via 2 access points you plug into the wall.

Obviously you don't run a spinning disk unsecured for longer than you have to, but an HDD isn't going to be damaged by running sitting on a table unless you push it off or start jumping on the table with it still spinning.

I wouldn't honestly recommend anything less than a 7200 RPM drive unless you're just using it for storing files in a NAS or similar.

As @thepanda66 stated above. Typical home use case, modem (fiber, cable, DSL, etc.) connects to the WAN port and your personal devices connect to the LAN ports.

For the second part of your question, you'll need to double check your user manual but typically you'll use the LAN port for repeater function.
