Not necessarily, it pushes the creator to come out with something better so they get sales of new hardware. Otherwise what incentive is there for someone to even sell their old gear if not to buy something newer?

It would really suck if Sony released Playstation from the late 90's and never came out with PS2,3, or 4.

I assume you're talking about owning them, not necessarily playing them on a regular basis? Ones I have that are not on your list include Dreamcast and Virtual Boy (though more of a show piece...it hurts my eyes way too much to actually play it)

Otherwise, after the mid 2000's (fat PS3 era) is when I switched back over to PC gaming.

Good point. I get around the problem by using a private mail service where delivery drivers are supposed to deliver packages inside the business during business hours instead of dropping them out in the open for anyone to snag. Unfortunately, Amazon's delivery drivers don't always follow that protocol, which is one of the reasons I no longer order anything from Amazon (other than e-books).

I can see a porch pirate following the delivery truck and snagging the package before the robot can get out to the curb to pick it up.

Linus is (occasionally) wrong, and notoriously doesn't know pretty much anything about Servers.

As @Electronics Wizardy mentions, if you want to use VM's, I'd stay away from FreeNAS. It can, but not well.

I have the same T410 server (mind you, a bit different config), and I use ESXi (There's a free version) that works really well. I then have FreeNAS setup in a VM.

Proxmox, as Wizardy suggested, is another fantastic choice - it supports ZFS right out of the box, so you don't even need FreeNAS for a Proxmox setup.

So that should be fine for a nas for now.

Id just get a hba for the drives and you should be good to go.

Wait, the reason you're adding 32GB of RAM is because "1GB per 1TB of space"?

    That's a completely false myth.

ZFS does not require 1GB of RAM per 1TB of space. ONLY Deduplication requires that, and Dedupe on ZFS isn't great to begin with, so don't use Dedupe.

If you're not doing anything crazy, a single 8GB stick will do you just fine. Go with 2x 8GB (16GB total) if you want extra RAM.

They do, but they're still only a Triple Channel memory controller. It's quite clear about it in the Datasheet.

I believe if you max out all 8, it still runs in Triple Channel, but 4 slots share the same channel, but I'm not certain - it might actually drop down to Dual Channel instead.

the 1gb per tb is complete bs, ram really depends on the usage, and more is always better, but for a home nas, you can get away with a lot less.

Ah interesting so you have internal drives only? Well believe it or not that makes things pretty easy... all you would need is either a RAID controller with the SFF-8087 to SATA breakout cables or just plug them into the onboard ports on the motherboard. Sorry I pretty much assume everyone has hot swap backplanes with these old servers...

I have a T410 - it does not have a storage slot. Standard PCIe RAID Cards only.

That old Perc 6 controller uses SFF 8484 to SFF 8087 cables. So you'll need to add some SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 cables to your shopping list if you're going with a newer controller. They should be plug and play with your current backplane.

The Dell Perc H700 controller should be a drop in replacement and with current firmware should have no problem handling >4TB drives (though support for larger than 6TB drives is spotty). Keep in mind that if you do order one of the H700 cards that have older firmware, you may get the dreaded "Blocked" drive problem. Once apon a time, Dell decided they were not going to let people use non Dell drives in their servers but since then have unlocked their cards). Just update the firmware and you'll be fine.

Also in looking at specs on a T410 it doesn't appear to have a storage slot so if you get other Dell controllers do NOT get the "integrated" models...you would not only have to get a bracket for them, you would have to try to cross-flash them with different firmware.

You might be able to get a real quad core in there like a 2670QM but I don't know if the BIOS or the cooling can handle it.

Just an FYI those bezels are mostly to keep morons from messing with your server (they can lock)...if you decide to get one with a front bezel on the T710 it is super easy to pop off. Just a latch at the top of the case and it comes right off for drive access. Quite a few eBay sellers tend not to even include a bezel with surplus servers which makes an 11th gen tower look very...incomplete. The T320 on the other hand looks fine with or without the front bezel.
