    Have I mentioned lately how much do I hate Windows 10? This time I've had enough.

    I now hate it enough that I've ripped the poor little SSD with Ubuntu installed out of my laptop and put it in my main desktop... I been pushed enough that now I am finally switching all my productivity and internet usage to Linux. The way things are going, maybe gaming too.

    Probably wouldn't be right to say I won't miss the good times with Windows...and if I said I wouldn't ever use Windows again for anything I would probably be lying... but for my use at home at least...it is time to say farewell...
    Bye Cortana... I'm going to miss finding creative ways to block you at the router level and disable your program without borking the start menu. Bye Partition manager... I'm going to miss how you can seemingly never delete a system partition from a freaking flash drive...I have to use diskpart instead. Bye Microsoft Edge... you only sat in the task bar really... but I guess it would be rude if I didn't say goodbye. Bye games and apps that Microsoft would randomly install taking up precious space on my tiny SSD because I mostly use network drives and shares for important crap... Bye iSCSI initiator... I'll still never figure out why you would delete my server's connection entry randomly on reboot... Bye Recycle Bin... I'm not going to miss all the times I had to go into the registry and delete the SMB address entries every time I would accidentally move files from a locked share into you instead of deleting them. Bye restrictive Microsoft network drivers that decided to disable all network teaming functionality in pro licenses (a feature they used to allow mind you) thereby only making it available to enterprise licenses...jerks! Bye Workstation service... I lost several days of sanity over you when you would randomly deny connections to SMB shares... Bye Microsoft Content Delivery Manager/service... I'm going to...well I'm not going to miss you at all.

    Okay, people of LTT forums - I have two questions for you all. They will live in the Status Updates, because I'm not in the mood to deal with the main forums with Finals week only a few days away. Here's the second question:

    Hypothetically speaking - if money was no object, which version of Project Personal Datacentre would you rather do (if there were no other options):
    https://linustechtips.com/main/profile/511347-tophatproductions115/?status=228639&type=status https://linustechtips.com/main/profile/511347-tophatproductions115/?status=229806&type=status The first one is a two-part upgrade, consisting of one year where I go for the E5-2600 Xeons first before upgrading to Threadripper in the next 2 years afterward. The second option is the HPE (HP Enterprise) BladeSystem c3000 that I mentioned in the second comment (full parts list). Just looking at things far ahead a this point, since the best time to plan is beforehand.
    Here are the ESXi VMs that I'd be running on such a machine:
    Windows Server 2016 Datacentre (VMware vSphere, Ms Active Directory, Simple DNSCrypt, Plex Media Server, multiplayer gaming servers, etc.) Mac OS X El Capitan/Mojave (Google Drive/MEGA file sync, general programming/debugging, audio/video editing, storing Android backups, etc.) Manjaro Linux (getting used to Linux again - may try OwnCloud, Steam, and even OS development. F@H, BOINC, etc.) Windows 10 Enterprise (primary VM for most front-end tasks. Gaming, livestreaming, SVP4 Pro, Discord bots, etc.) Test VM, for when new software packages need to be tested before deployment Each one should have at least 4-6 cores and 8GB RAM. Windows Server and the Test VM don't need GPUs, since they're not performing any tasks that can be accelerated by an AIB. MacOS and Linux are getting Radeon cards (hypothetically) if I had it my way. Windows gets whatever card I give it, because the GTX 1080/Ti might not be in the cards by the time I get the cash.

    TL;DR Food for thought - what's your preference?

    1x AMD FirePro or Radeon Pro (Vega) AIB 1x nVIDIA Quadro or Tesla (Volta) AIB in a slim, low-profile case of sorts. Perhaps Noctua fans could handle the cooling? The Xeon D lineup is meant to act as an in-between for Intel Atom and Xeon E3, and is okay for certain tasks and workloads. A low-profile/SFF render box or general work box sounds like a nice idea (ignoring costs). Imagine that screwed to the back of a VESA-compatible monitor with a shroud to cover it (and make it look like a 2-in-one).

    A hacintosh using that would be pretty lit IMO - especially for use as a low-power workstation  Or even Windows Server 2016...

    Okay, I have bad news and good news. I'll get the bad news out the way first.

    Project Personal Datacentre is being heavily delayed, due to lack of funding. Parents made the decision for me to get unpaid technical training, in addition to the other two certifications that I'll already have by the end of this year (and two Associate's degrees). And I just found out that I wouldn't be able to work this summer - today. So, any stable source of disposable income, to power the new ESXi build is currently non-existent. And I'm not expecting them to start helping me buy any high-end parts (because they haven't ever done that). The project is being stretched out over the course of 2019 and 2020, to accommodate for limited resources. The bad part is, I had a job already lined up (since I actually stayed in good standing with my higher-ups at Amazon, and their wages went up recently).

    In addition to not having the income, I am still at the mercy of volatile market prices, so I won't be able to buy anything better/newer after this delay - which only serves to age the target platform (x79/C602) even more, before I even get my hands on it. And I have to hope that the prices of the IvyBridge-EP E5 Xeons don't go up in that 12-month period, or ESXi goes down for good  I already told them that I'd be going for this project, in conjunction with my expected 2nd certification (VMware). So, this is like getting ignored. If this goes as I think it will, the Threadripper upgrade will be delayed to at least 2021 - and who knows what things will be like by then?!

    The good news is, I have a mass sale going on - on my eBay store  So, if my inventory gets bought up, I can make upwards of 1k USD on the sales, which would take care of about half of the initial cost of Project Datacentre (assuming that parents don't try to confiscate anything "for College"). The first item to purchase will be the time-sensitive one - the GTX 1080 Ti. The rest can be bought at almost any time (aside from maybe the Xeons - still concerned). I can at least use the GTX 1080 Ti in the T7500 until the rest of Project Datacentre becomes possible again (2020). Still miffed...

    P.S. The best I can hope for is that mom and dad just throw eBay gift cards at me for my birthday this year 😂

    Okay - this is getting annoying. My workstation hasn't been updated to 1809, but my laptop has been getting pounded with updates since installing 1809 😂 Almost 1 per day, and they all required reboots. It's insane! Can't Microsoft lay off on the constant updates for a while? Like, at least a few weeks?!

    I guess that my next rep objective should be 7K by 2020 - which would be Project Datacentre (Threadripper Edition)  Then I'll be on page 3, which would be pretty cool. Can't wait to start my first internship, though.

    On a side note, due to the way that things are looking for this summer, I may have to extend the duration of my upgrade. I'll probably start with a small, functional subset of the parts I need for the final version:

    Base Computer/Tower :: Dell Precision T7610
    CPU ::  1x Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2
    RAM :: 16x 4GB DDR3-1333 PC3-10600 REG ECC (gotta keep costs down - will upgrade to 8/16GB DIMMs later)
    STR ::  3x 2TB HITACHI HUA722020ALA330 HDDs +
                            1x Western Digital WD Blue 3D NAND 500GB SATA SSD (already acquired)
    GPU :: 1x AMD Radeon Rx Vega 64's (I may even forgo getting the Vega 64's this summer) +
                            1x nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080/1080 Ti (more time-sensitive)
    SFX ::  1x Creative Sound Blaster ZxR/Zx (w/ ACM)
    PRP :: 1x Elgato Game Capture HD60 Pro (already purchased)
                1x Logitech K120 USB keyboard (already purchased)
                1x Logitech M510 wireless mouse
                1x HITACHI GH24NSC0 optical drive
                1x NETGEAR WNDA3100v3 N600 (Wi-Fi - already purchased)
    NOTE :: All other components (not included in the linked photo) provided by OEM

    I also have to buy supporting hardware possibly (like compatible HDD caddies and such - prices without the GPUs included). Then I'd buy the rest later on, as more cash comes in from my eBay store and such. So, AMD plan may get pushed back to 2021/2022, due to the decision by my parents to force the internship. I can't be sure of what income I will be earning, even though it's a paid internship. If it goes to worst, I'll simply ditch the new sound card for a while and buy the GTX 1080/1080 Ti, the new mouse, and maybe the CPUs this year. I'll have a spare PCI slot at the bottom of the motherboard that I can use my current sound card with. Then buy the rest over time. Such a bad upgrade cycle...

Perhaps one that can be used with a spare GPU to apply Path Tracing to scene rendering. Maybe one that doesn't require rewriting existing projects if possible (can be dropped in, in place of other rendering methods/APIs)?...
