@firelighter487 Guess it depends on what you're wanting to do... If you want to emulate Android entirely then sure but if you're just wanting to run a game or two, anbox might be an easier alternative.

Have you tried Anbox? May or may not be what you're looking for...

  5. FreeNAS doesn't use the IronWolf Health feature of the drive (which is IMO one of the most attractive features of IronWolf and is only available on 4TB models and above source:https://www.seagate.com/internal-hard-drives/hdd/ironwolf/) so really any drive that is meant to be in an array would work with FreeNAS...it doesn't have to be IronWolf.
  6. Beginner distros of linux... well the Debian variety would be pretty good start since there are instructions and tutorials literally everywhere for anything you can imagine... Ubuntu MATE (as stated above) is a great distro since it is so popular. Another one would be Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop (as long as the computer can handle it) since it has a feel kind of similar to windows. I started an elderly neighbor on Linux mint after having a lot of problems with adware, malware, and Windows updates breaking everything... He picked up mint cinnamon surprisingly fast! I did a few housekeeping things for "behind the scenes" management like installing ad blockers, adding update commands to run with a cron job, and locking down the account by creating a separate admin account. Recently I moved him over to a more minimal distro after he got used to mint. I couldn't help myself...I upgraded his laptop to 8GB of RAM and an SSD... To see his complete amazement with the sub 30 second cold boot to desktop time on an older laptop made it worth every penny to me.
  7. So the only feature are green LEDs and it burns the logo in bread? What about overclocking it?

Soooo, I saw a meme and uhhh

@2FA I'm not sure what your point is. Many fuels burn cleaner than coal too. Especially coal with a higher sulfur content.

Too bad that so many people drive around believing they're doing well for the planet ignorant to the fact that they traded a gasoline powered vehicle for a coal powered vehicle. Even if you pay the extra fee to supplement your home power with "green energy" there is no way to tell how other charging stations (such as ones in parking lots or even Tesla's stations) are powered... Years ago Musk said his supercharging stations will eventually be solar, however seems many are still on the grid.

Yikes... hope things get back on track soon, it was interested to see what the final result would be. If you're going with Ivy Bridge Xeons then you'll be on X79 as X99 uses the LGA2011-3 socket and Haswell CPUs with DDR4. From what I've been able to find, Ivy Bridge Xeons would be the newest Xeon platform you can still use DDR3 with (up to 1866Mhz RAM on the high end Ivy Bridge Xeons!)

Open start menu and type gpedit.msc Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Update Double click "Configure Automatic Updates" Click Enable Select option 2 to prompt download then auto install or 3 for auto download but prompt for install Click Apply Now Windows will bug the crap out of you but you choose when to install updates.

What sort of power limitations? You planning to put a couple overclocked titans in that Dell? ? I have an old R5500 that will handle 3 Fermi quadro cards (at least 360W worth) on an 1100W PSU... From what it looks like the T7610 has PSUs that go up to 1300W but doesn't support redundant PSUs...The R7610 will but were you looking for redundancy or just want higher rated PSUs?
  15. Farm animals can carry disease (such as E. coli). If you're around them a lot you likely would fare way better then someone who lives a sterilized indoor HEPA filtered life. But all you can do now is to monitor for symptoms.

Ah didn't know you were running a hypervisor, sure I can understand wanting the extra cores. As far as I know you don't need to reserve cores for ESXI either...At least there are no cores left on my server for ESXI...they're all provisioned for running VMs ?

Not saying to skimp... just that depending on your use case, if you want a slightly higher clock, the 2690 would still give you 10 cores while also giving a bit better single thread performance at a cheaper price to boot! The system I'm putting together has 2 CPUs so I don't obviously I probably would not miss the extra 2 cores as much as you might...but for the price difference IMO could be better spent on more memory, good GPU, PSU, more storage, etc. Unfortunately the E5-2697 V2 being at the top of the Ivy Bridge Xeons their price is not likely to drop much until they're completely and utterly obsolete...similar to how the X5450 was and the X5690 is now...
  20. Same... when I ran my R7000 as a primary router, I used a laptop cooler as well (though plugged into the wall). I now use mine as an AP for my PFsense router and there is almost no detectable heat.

On a "new to me" build that I may or may not be working on, the price difference between the E5-2690 V2 and the E5-2697 V2 was more than I could justify. Unless you really need those extra 2 cores...the 2690 will have slightly better single threaded performance as well. Also for the memory... just borrow some from your existing workstation until you get some 16GB PC3-12800R sticks. You can find 128GB listings (8 X 16GB) on eBay for about $230 shipped. Maybe it'll drop some more once you're ready to buy.
  22. I have not personally seen the ads for the featured product. However from description in the video, it is just a predatory product designed to take advantage of the tech illiterate. Because for the cost of a USB stick, you too can have an "Xtra-PC" My question is though... what if Grandma isn't able to boot from USB without a boot priority change? Maybe she could just google it and a Microsoft certified tech could remote into her PC to remove the hackers causing the problem for a lifetime subscription fee of $599? I am incredibly curious exactly how that little USB stick is configured... Does it have a Cron job to auto update? Does Grandma have root privileges? Can the Grandson/Granddaughter configure the USB stick so as not to grant Grandma ultimate power to destroy her computer again? Properly locked down, Linux is GREAT for Grandma. Even if it were Debin based... I would much rather get the call of "I can't install this because it keeps asking for a password" than the call "I already paid the man from Microsoft but now my computer is asking for a password when I turn it on"
  23. Seems like many companies are ditching the USB flash drive "network storage" due to security concerns. IMO good riddance to it. An off the shelf consumer router USB port isn't going to come close to the performance of even the cheapest NAS out there. Unless you're experiencing performance issues on your internet connection, I would say put your money toward a NAS instead. It will be more secure and way more versatile.
  24. Well this is a first...old Asus laptop that doesn't post unless laying in pieces on my bench. "Customer" also says this 8 year old Asus laptop is 3 years old. Either they got screwed or their memory is going. Glad I don't do this crap professionally.
