  1. MOBO: ASRock Z270 Killer SLI/ac LGA 1151 RAM: Corsair Vengence 2400 2 8GB sticks I currently have 16 GB of ram and I want to put more in for creating a Hyper-V lab environment. I can buy another 2x8 kit for 32GB total or spend less than $15 more for 2x16 kit and have 48GB total. I know that mixes ram sizes might cause issues like the ram only running in single channel mode. (i don't know too much about that though) Which is better, 32 in dual channel or 48 in single channel?
  2. Bluetooth has been working just fine as long as I've had this motherboard until now. I reinstalled windows 10 onto a m.2 from a SSD. Now it is not working. In the notification area on the right, I do not have a bluetooth button to turn bluetooth on and off. Under devices, when I click add a bluetooth device, it tells me it couldn't connect. If I run the bluetooth troubleshooter, I'm told: "Device does not have bluetooth. Bluetooth is not available on this device." In device manager, bluetooth is nowhere to be found. My motherboard is a Z270 Killer SLI/ac I downloaded the bluetooth drivers and upon trying to install them, I'm told: 'a newer product version is already installed' when i run the windows installer package. When I run the setup application, it tells me: "this product cannot support downgrading from version 22.90.2.1 to version 19.10.1635.0483. What is going on here?
  3. I just put the latest edition of ubuntu server on an old computer that I want to turn into a server. Here's what I want to be able to do: 1. read, write to, create, upload, and delete files on the server from any on my network and from outside my network 2. access/stream my music/movies/pictures on the server from any device on my network and from outside my network What types of servers should I install? A plex server? A samba server? A NAS? VPN? FTP? All of them or some combination? I'm confused about the difference Thanks
  4. I noticed that I TrustedInstaller is the owner of my windows and program files folders. Is this the way it should be? I was unable to make a simple edit to the hosts file a couple days ago without removing inheritance and giving myself full control of the file. Would anything get messed up if I made my user account or the administrator's group the owner? Trusted install owns: C:\, C:\Windows, C:\Program Files, and others System owns C:\users, C:\users\chris My user account is part of the administrator's group C:\ (my account has read/execute and list) (admin group has full control) C:\windows (my account has read/execute and list)(admin group has inherited special permissions)
  5. Regarding transcoding: I'm not sure I know how to answer that. It will be just for me to watch. I'm the only user who will be using it. Budget, I'd like to keep the whole build under $300. I already have the storage.
  6. I'd like to get advice on what kind of CPU I should get to handle everything I want to do with a server I want to build. I plan on using this server as a file server for all my devices, ftp server, plex media server, and a vpn server. Will an i3 be good enough, to handle all this, or should I go with an i5?
  7. +These are the connectors on my power supply. Do I need to get a certain type of tester, or would a standard power supply tester work?
  8. I bought a logitech K400 Plus wireless keyboard with touchpad and I'm using it on my desktop computer running Windows 10. Does anyone know how I can adjust the speed of the touchpad? The cursor moves kinda slow. I can't find any way to do it in the control panel or in settings>devices.
  9. I'm looking for an alternative to onenote that I can use on my linux laptop and my windows desktop that will sync and update notes between devices. Anyone know of anything I could use?
  10. How does wine work? Can I try any windows program with it, or is there just a list of compatible programs. I really like Microsoft Onenote, and If I can get that working and sync up with my other computer, I'd switch over to Linux on my laptop entirely. A few more programs like kindle and google drive too. Would those work?
  11. So if it's the ram timings, I'd probably have the exact same issue if I ordered an identical crucial stick?
  12. I have an acer aspire. I tried to go into the bios to see if I could change anything with the ram to get them to match, but the bios is very simple and I do not see any options to change ram settings.
  13. Yes, trying for 16. Best to stay with same brand as well?
  14. I just bought some new ram for my laptop. My current laptop ram is 8GB Hynix 2400 DDR4. I bought 8GB Crucial 2400 DDR4 ram. My computer blue screens with the new ram in. I ram memory diagnostics on the new ram and it appears to be fine. Is this a fluke? If I returned the Crucial stick for another Crucial of the same kind, will I most likely have the same issue? Or should I try to get the exact same kind of ram?
  15. Might be dumb questions but the usual "add to cart" button is not there. There's a download button. When click the button to download it a black download window pops up. Nothing else.
  16. I'm looking to play this game, but I can't find it on steam. The only thing I see is a demo of the last season. Where are the others?
  17. So I'm looking to buy a cheap Mac mini to familiarize myself with mac and play around with the apps. I'm confused about the different versions of Mac OS X, so I just have a few questions I think would clear some things up for me. Thanks in advance! Are they kinda like the different updates of Windows 10? (17.03, 17.09, 18.03, 18.09) Would it make sense to think of them like that? Updates optional or forced? Will things not work correctly if you are not running the latest version? Will a computer running snow leopard do the same thing as one running high sierra or mojave? Are there features or apps available on the latest version that won't work on previous versions?
  18. I got my A+ certification in June 2018, and I'll be ready to take network+ in about a month or so. I've been working at Fry's Electronics as a computer technician since March 2018. I know a bit from LPI Linux Essentials 1, and I think either that or CCENT could be the fastest certs I could get after Network+. Server+ also looks like one that wouldn't take as much time as the others. I know these certs are a bit varied, but I'm just interested in a lot of different aspects of computers. I'm especially interested in Linux and networking. However, which one or two do you think I should focus on next in order to land a better job(hopefully with a salary)? These are the certs/areas I'm interested in learning: LPI Linux Essentials LPIC 1 or 2 Linux+ MCSA Study Active Directory Security+ Server+ CCNA CCENT
  19. 3 TB Windows budget not important not sure about speed Because I'm a nerd
  20. My data mostly includes movies, tv shows, music, pdf e-books, documents, personal photos and recordings. I'm going to be reading from the drive the vast majority of the time, and occasionally adding new e-books, movies, etc. Will that make a difference in which type of raid to choose? (hardware raid vs software, raid 1 vs raid 5)
  21. Is there a way to share an entire drive instead of folders within the drive? I was able to right-click on a folder inside my D drive, share it with everyone, then mapped the network drive on my laptop. Just want to know if I can share the entire drive in the same way.
  22. I have a laptop running windows 10 Home and a desktop running windows 10 Pro. Is there a way to connect them together with a workgroup to share files, folders, and printers? (as I understand it, microsoft did away with homegroups, right?) I just want my laptop to have access to the printer and hard drives connected to my desktop. Thanks
