  1. in canadian currency the s8+ is a higher price than that. which feature it have that new phones don't? i will most likely settle with the galaxy s9 for reasons i will explain below. also guys, in contrary to my last post i actually won't be getting the note 9. the main problem is standby. it's too big of a problem for me to overlook. what i mean is that i'm the kind of person who doesn't have my smartphone out as much as many other people. most of the time i just keep it tucked in my belt pouch where it's safe. i think i will be using it more when i get a better phone, but the kind of smartphone user i am won't actually change too much. i believe the reason why so many people are comfortable putting their phone in their pocket or bag is because they will take it out and be holding it most of the time that they are not busy using their hands for something else. that just doesn't work for me. if i keep it in my pocket or bag i get extraordinarily paranoid. the big belt pouch i talk about in my last post. i bought it yesterday to try it out because i wanted to actually get an idea of what the experience would be like. i was quite completely disappointed. this is the belt pouch i am talking about if anyone is interested to see. i bought it from a store though. it's likely the only belt pouch that can properly hold the note 9 if it has a protective case on it. the problems i encountered is that it is simply way too big. i'm also the kind of person who likes my possessions to be very covert if you know what i mean. i hate attracting unnecessary attention, and having a belt pouch the size of a large lotion bottle on my belt is just way too out there. it's extremely visible under my shirt. if i'm wearing sweater or a jacket it's not a problem, but i won't always be wearing a sweater or a jacket. the positioning of it is also another problem. putting my phone horizontally into the belt pouch itself isn't a problem, but the hook part that goes on the belt is able to rotate. the resistance on the rotation is almost nonexistent. if i didn't have a pair of earphones attacked to my phone then the thing would be like a fidget spinner. if it happens to turn upside down while i'm moving around and i don't use the locking mechanism then the note 9 would probably fall out while i'm moving around. i really like the locking mechanism, but there are times when i constantly take my phone out to check the time quickly or other small bits of information. having to always lock and unlock it would quickly become a pain. if the resistance on the hook rotation was extremely strong, and limited to horizontal and vertical angle that would be so much better. the way it is now it's simply not usable for my purposes. i'm sure many other people might enjoy the product depending on how they use it. hopefully i can return this for a full refund. so instead i decided i will get the samsung galaxy s9 (NOT +). the screen is still a bit bigger than the one on my current phone so it will still be an improvement. the battery life is much better but i get that the hardware running the s9 is much more powerful, so the average battery life might actually be about the same. i don't think it will be too much of a big deal. my current belt pouch will most likely be able to properly hold the s9 even if it has a case on it. so i will have a much better phone and still be able to keep it comfortably on standby on my belt. if there is no other phone release more appropriate than the s9 before about mid next month then i will definitely be getting that one.
  2. lol okay so i went to the mall yesterday to check out a bunch of smartphones and accessories from different phone stores to help get me a good idea of the kind of market there is and get some info. apparently the oneplus 6 doesn't sell in stores in canada, so i would need to buy it online, which i'm not a fan of. also, i managed to get some hands on time with the samsung galaxy note 9. i fell in love instantly. at this moment i'm pretty much dead set on getting the note 9. however i suppose i won't be able to get it until about mid next month or later. there will most likely be a few phone releases between now and then, so maybe i will change my mind. the note 9 is just too good and beautiful to compromise. i have pretty big hands so it just works so nicely with me. in fact when i was holding it i didn't feel like it was big at all. it just felt so right like it was made for my hands. it has so many epic features too. i... hope it doesn't set me on fire. it's almost winter so at the very least there should be no chance of overheating until next year. the belt pouch i will get is extremely secure but it is also possible to break it off from a certain angle. so worst case scenario if it catches fire while in my belt pouch i can break it off quick. this is going to be an epic upgrade ?
  3. i see. thanks for the info. i think i'll go with the 6gb chatr plan or auto pay for 8gb just in case, and hopefully it won't be too slow.
  4. so if you've read my other thread you are aware that i will be buying a new smartphone soon. likely sometime between now and early november. i've only ever had one smartphone which is some crappy https://www.phonemore.com/alcatel-one-touch-fierce-2-7040t/specs/1979 so i don't know as much about smartphones as many other people. anyways, i've always been on the cheapest chatr plan without data, so it only recently hit me that learning about data plans will be very important in regards to how well i can utilize my smartphone. i pretty much know that locked smartphones is when you are buying the phone from a carrier and usually requires a two year contract with that service. apparently there is often stock software and adds on the phone from that carrier and you are pretty much trapped with that phone and in the contract until the time is up. i guess the upside is you may be able to get a free or lower cost phone. the downside is there are many limitations and unnecessary addons to the phone. when you get an unlocked phone you are paying full price for the phone and you can get whatever plan from any service you want, and switch at any time. you can also mod your phone or something. anyways. my original plan was to get the $50 REGULAR chatr plan as listed here, which apparently gives 6 gb of data. it sounds like a very awesome deal. i never had a data plan before but i know that they used to be much more expensive. however, the problem occurred when i saw that these chatr data plans are at 3g speeds. i saw a chart in a video showing that 3g speeds are dreadfully slow compared to 4g speeds, and 5g speeds will be legendary. i'm not getting a 5g phone anytime soon, but now i have to decide between a potentially crappy 3g chatr plan or finding a different service and getting a 4g data plan. the problem with that is i simply don't have any experience with data plans, data usage, etc. i have no idea how much i can use the internet with a 6gb data plan, or how slow or not slow it will actually be. i can assume a 4g data plan is a lot more expensive, but i also don't know if the difference in speed will be worth the price. so now i am asking. how much internet usage can i get out of 2, 4, 6, etc gb of data? does anyone have any experience with the chatr data plans or any 3g data plans? how does the 3g actually compare to the 4g? what are some good services in canada that offer good 4g plans? any other info i should know about?
  5. i would prefer to buy the unlocked smartphone from the store. online purchase is kind of a last resort. online purchases are a bit of a phobia for me because of a previous experience. can't find a good price for the s9 retail. unfortunately i can't find any oneplus 6 in ontario. if anyone knows a place that sells oneplus 6 in ontario that information would help. i'm kinda leaning towards it.
  6. are type c to 3.5mm headphone jack dongles good? do they offer the same quality sound and functionality as if it was a real headphone jack? if using that method can offer the same audio experience then i might be able to settle for a smartphone with no headphone jack. i suppose it will depend on the location of the type c port on the phone because i'm also going to buy a new belt pouch to keep the phone in. i just can't put my phone in my pockets or my bag. it feels extraordinarily uncomfortable. anyways, i guess the issue there would be whether the belt pouch blocks the type c port. maybe i can find one that doesn't if i decide to go that route.
  7. i've been looking into the smartphones you guys are talking about. the oneplus 6t sounds extremely promising and if it has a telephoto lens then i will most likely get it. however, there has apparently been an official announcement that the oneplus 6t will not have an earphone jack. i currently don't own any wireless earphones or headphones mainly because i prefer the wired ones. i'm sure the wireless ones will get better over the next few years, but at this time only the most expensive wireless earphones are actually good. if i were to get a pair of wireless earphones they would need to have ear hooks, a portable battery charger, and a microphone with a button to answer calls (media buttons wouldn't hurt, but not necessary), and a battery life of at least 9 hours. i don't think i've even seen something like that in stores, and if it exists it will probably cost $150+. the no earphone jack thing is really the only deal breaker. if i manage to find a really good pair of wireless earphones, or they change their mind then it will be fine. https://www.techradar.com/news/the-oneplus-6t-wont-have-a-headphone-jack-but-battery-life-will-be-improved if i'm going with a google pixel it would have to be the pixel 2 xl but it's quite expensive. i don't think i'll like the galaxy s7 or s8 the lg g7+ is promising. the price is a bit high but it could be worth it. are there any smartphones with a telephoto lens? those lens are really awesome.
  8. hello. i will be buying a new smartphone in ontario in about a month maybe. the only smartphone i've owned is an old crappy https://www.phonemore.com/alcatel-one-touch-fierce-2-7040t/specs/1979 i've had for about a couple of years. so i don't know much about smartphones. i want the best possible smartphone for my purposes which should be a balance between price, functionality, and future proofing. as for the price, i would prefer something under $900 CAD but if it's necessary to go higher i might be able to. as for future proofing, i would like to have this smartphone for at least 2 years and it will still be good. for functionality i will describe some of the uses i will have for this smartphone and the kind of performance i expect out of it. i will be playing games, but the games i will be playing will most likely be very lightweight games that i will play for short periods of time. it must be an android phone, and preferably the latest android OS or at least a very recent one. there must be no hardware lag at all when i am navigating through the GUI of the OS or navigating through apps. i will be on a lot of social and media apps (facebook, youtube, etc. a couple or few dating apps) of course i will need a good camera to take good pictures of myself for the those social apps. the back camera on my current smartphone is like 5mp so it's not that great. the front camera is atrocious. i'm sure the camera quality is definitely not attractive to females so the new phone for sure needs a good camera, and i would prefer if the back camera is at least a dual camera. apparently those are very good, but i guess it's not absolutely necessary. the front camera should be at least 8mp. also i really like sunsets and stuff so i will be taking pictures of nice scenery sometimes. i need to be able to record video in at least 1080p 60 FPS. i would prefer if the screen is bigger than 5". does anyone know a good smartphone that suits my needs? i checked out a review on the samsung galaxy s9+ and it is really good, but it's over my preferred price of being less than $900 CAD. if to get a really good smartphone i absolutely need to go over that budget then i can try, so it's okay to suggest a smartphone above the budget if it is good enough to warrant the recommendation.
  9. when i turned on my pc and monitor today my monitor turned a weird purple color for like a minute before it went back to normal with the green tint. this hasn't happened before. anyone want to say something?
  10. anyone got any idea what might be going on here?
  11. my monitor is the Acer S230HL. i got it roughly 5 years ago. it's been great. i never caused any sort of physical harm to it. when i came home earlier i noticed there was a green tint towards the right side of my monitor. it was completely fine before i left. when i screenshot my page the problem doesn't show up, so it's local to how i view the monitor. the problem also persists when the cable from the monitor to the GPU is unplugged, so it's completely a problem with the monitor. what's going on?
  12. phew...... well i tried changing the ram speed and it screwed everything up. after saving the new ram speed settings in the bios and restarting, my pc went into a reset loop. after cutting the power and tried turning it on again it powered on but would never display anything. i was sure of the problem since the LED on the motherboard was displaying that the RAM was having problems. good thing i read the manual. i had to clear the CMOS with a flat head bit which was scary since i didn't know if it was going to work at the time. everything seems fine now and i've learned a bit more, so i guess it's okay. i'd rather not have to do that again though. anyways, i think the problem might have been that i didn't change the voltage of the ram before restarting it, which i admit was careless of me. it wouldn't allow me to change the ram speed to 3000 mhz though. it gave me options like 2844 and 3200. that could have been the problem as well maybe? there was an additional option called a-xmp. it stated that it would automatically set the speed and voltage of the ram module if a profile was available, or something like that. i think this means that if i use the a-xmp option it will automatically set the proper values based on the ram sticks. should i try this?
  13. i changed the op since i figured out one of the older problems.
  14. I built a pc recently and i noticed i now seem to have a couple methods for recording gameplay when i play games. pressing the win+g brings up a bar that lets me record (i think this is a windows 10 feature?). pressing alt+z brings up the geforce experience tab that seems to let me record too. i think the MSI afterburner will allow me to record too, but i don't have that yet. anyways i only tried recording with the win+g method. the game i was playing ran at max graphics locked at 60 fps, but i notice that the recording didn't look as good and it also looked like the frames were lower in the video. so i'm wondering if i have better choices between these options for video capture to record better quality videos? or if you have advice on a different recording software that is better.
  15. i recently bought 16 gigs of DDR4 3000 mhz RAM for when i was building my pc. my motherboard is the msi mortar b350m. i remember when i first checked the bios it showed the ram speed around 2100 or something, but on the RAM package it states 3000 mhz. i was told that the RAM initially is at a lower value and i need to raise it, but why does the motherboard lower the RAM below its baseline? i'm guessing to increase this value i need to go into OC mode and change the dram frequency?
  16. it's like a slight vrooming sound. it's definitely not the hard drive. i confirmed it just now actually. i pulled off the front panel of the case while it was on to expose the three front fans. as soon as i pulled off the front panel, the noise went completely silent as the fans became fully exposed (and they were still spinning). as soon as i put it back on the noise started again. i made sure that it's on properly too. the only thing that i can think is that it's an air flow problem due to the fan speed.
  17. Hello i have the masterbox lite 5 RGB case and ever since i built this pc and first powered it on it's been making a loud and weird sound (not too weird). from that time i've assumed that it's probably due to the speed of the three front fans being too fast for the limited air flow. how can i adjust the fan speed, and which speed setting should i consider?
  18. Hello i have the masterbox lite 5 RGB and the msi mortar b350. the three stock front fans on the case and the motherboard all have RGB. the problem is that the LED is red and i have no idea how to change the color. i found this mystic light page on the msi website but i don't really get it. i see a couple of download links at the bottom but i'm not sure which one would help me, and i'm not sure if this will affect the color of the case lights (it might, since they were both red when i booted). https://www.msi.com/Landing/mystic-light-motherboard#extension any advice?
  19. i finally got my first build finished and I can already tell that it is leagues faster than my old pc, even though all I have done so far is update the OS, and install my antivirus. now I shall install the necessary drivers before I can finally start gaming. I need to know which drivers I need to install and which order to install them in, and how to install them. after watching some guides on youtube I have a good idea of which drivers to install, but I need more assurance. this stuff is still a bit confusing to me. i'll be honest, even though it took me over 17 hours of constant work, actually building the pc was a lot more fun than trying this driver installation stuff. maybe it's because all of the first boot tension is gone, and I am so close to playing games without the lowest resolution, graphical settings, and less than 20 FPS. __________________ i watched that video from paul's hardware, but i still have some questions. i notice that the amd chipset driver can be attained from my motherboards website or from the AMD website. i heard that the chipset you get from the AMD website is a little bit better because of the performance plan stuff. should i go ahead and install the chipset drivers from the AMD website? also, are they installed in the same manner? i checked my bios version and it's quite outdated. i remember when i first launched this pc and entered bios it showed that my memory speed was like 2100 mhz or something like that, but the memory i purchased was 3000 mhz. am i right to assume that this issue is with the outdated bios? also, how necessary is it to update my bios? i guess i get my gpu drivers from the NVidia website? are there any other drivers i need to install or update?
  20. right, thanks guys. also yea i don't plan on OCing and stuff since it's my first build.
  21. i finished my first pc build not too long ago and now i am preparing to transfer to the new computer, like downloading the OS to the flash drive. i've been looking at the motherboard manual and going over some online guides but the bios and driver stuff is still pretty confusing. i'm sure it won't take long for me to understand it properly though. anyways, i'm wondering if i should install windows 10 to the new pc after making some general observations in the bios or if i should install drivers. i only have one more usb, so i would only be able to install one driver. if so, which driver should i install?
  22. it's my first time building a pc and i made it this far after all this time, but now the 24 pin connector seems stuck when i try to put it in. i viewed it carefully and saw that the extra 4 pins needs to be flush with the 20 pins to go in at the same time, because of the way they connect together, and i made sure they were properly together. the problem is most likely that it requires more force to go in than i am giving it, because at the maximum strength that i currently give it i see the motherboard start to bend a little bit, so that's when i stop applying pressure. i even try to support the motherboard in different ways but i still reach the point where it feels like the motherboard can break before the 24 pins click. what should i do?
