Day Thirteen - Half Billion Day
2DollaKoala commented on GOTSpectrum's blog entry in Folding Month 2019
That chart seems to be sorted by month... and my score has grown well over 10 million points since the month started.... Why can't I find my name on there? On the lifetime chart I'm almost to the top 500 and I only started folding in September. I was on the list where they confirmed registration. Oh well. Am I just blind or am I misreading that chart on the "Day Thirteen" post? -

> In first place we have @Gorgon with a massive 116.56 million points I want to see their power bill for this month lol! -
You got this. Send a link when you can. Oh they wont have parts, they sell pre-builds like Dell and Apple and stuff. Maybe they have parts sometimes? Or at least god deals on accessories. You mentioned you had a case, so you can save a little there too. You'll want to consider investing in a display that's higher than 1080p though, It is exponentially more productive for work. So shop around for stuff like that too. They sometimes sell stuff online without a membership too. My main goal with that list was to put down the basic specs you should aim for.

So... running SolidWorks... They highly recommend you use Nvidia Quadro, but being a student on a very tight budget you're going to have to make some sacrifices. LTT actually did a video about SolidWorks you should check out if you haven't already... So... I mean... you could definitely get by with a system like one below this and could cut costs by sourcing your Windows license elsewhere, finding used components... and I'm definitely not saying, "buy this." I just wanted to quickly throw a list together for you and say... you need a larger budget. There's still the display, keyboard, and mouse missing from this list and you definitely would need to have a backup drive no matter what system you build to CYA. PCPartPicker Part List Type Item Price CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor $118.00 @ Amazon Motherboard Gigabyte B450 AORUS ELITE ATX AM4 Motherboard $103.98 @ Newegg Memory Patriot Viper Elite 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 Memory $59.89 @ OutletPC Storage Samsung 860 Evo 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $74.99 @ Adorama Storage Hitachi Ultrastar 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $32.99 @ Amazon Video Card XFX Radeon RX 580 8 GB GTS XXX ED Video Card $179.99 @ Amazon Case HEC HX300 ATX Mid Tower Case $36.98 @ Newegg Power Supply EVGA BQ 600 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply $65.98 @ Newegg Operating System Microsoft Windows 10 Pro OEM 64-bit $133.88 @ Amazon Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts Total (before mail-in rebates) $821.68 Mail-in rebates -$15.00 Total $806.68 Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-10-04 18:25 EDT-0400 Also worth looking at what discount retailers offer like Costco will have good deals sometimes. Even then, you're still going to need to up that budget to around the $800 mark at minimum for a desktop. Also, Running Linux off of a USB flash drive can be painfully slow. It works... but ideally you'd use another basic SATA SSD instead.

The worst part about today's digital economy is what happens to out stuff when we die. I think laws like this are a good first step but there's still more work to be done. Apple, Amazon, Blizzard, Google, Microsoft, Steam, you name it. If they sell you digital content, the license we have to agree to says it is not transferable. No even after you die. So if you want to pass on your digital library to your kids, you better make sure all of your account information and passwords are given to your family. Without that information, these companies won't give next of kin access to their account. Amazon used to do it, I helped a few people who's spouses passed away and a simple call to Amazon support transferred everything they bought to the spouses account.... but that changed by the time my parents passed. So now I have my dad's Kindle with about 150 books on it and if that thing dies, all those purchases vanish like a Thanos snap. This should be criminal. Everything else we buy can be passed on to someone else after we die. Digital purchases should be treated the same way. Some sort of licensing dispute between two studios shouldn't mean we lose access to a purchase either. I've bought albums on iTunes only to discover that one or two songs from the album are no longer available. It's BS! We should have the right to this property. Our purchases shouldn't be beholden to the whim of the provider. What's mine should stay mine unless I want someone else to have it.

Apple Will Pay 25% Tax on 5 Imported Mac Pro Components
2DollaKoala replied to jiyeon's topic in Tech News
Plus... the weight. Those systems will weigh at least 50 pounds. Like big SUV's it's cheaper to build the heavy appliance in the market that's going to buy the most of them to save on shipping. -
The never had a working AirPower pad though. At the announcement they had dumby shells that didn't work. They were trying to make a pad that had 25+ individual coils without any cooling... whoops. Apple's obsession with silent operation and minimal cooling is their biggest flaw IMO. Had they made a thicker pad with a couple small quiet fans and they would have been able to accomplish it.

How about the defense that you kinda need an MS account to use Windows anyway? Personally, the changes to Windows in terms of licensing has improved dramatically and it's because my keys are linked to my account. I'd be willing to bet that Windows will go the rout of macOS. Can't upgrade to the new version of macOS without an Apple ID. Plus it's super common for people to confuse their online account with their local account. Passwords get forgotten and frustration ensues.... Okay I did my bets on that one. This is definitely way worse than just nudging people into a MS account. Though they seem to have been kind enough to be giving away their OS upgrades. I wouldn't be surprised if a future Windows 11 is a free upgrade as well. But to make up the difference they'll probably make the system requirements tighter requiring people buy new computers and licenses. IDK... this is definitely a weird decision to force this kind of user account on people.

Show off your old and retro computer parts
2DollaKoala replied to TheTechnerd's topic in General Discussion
Oh that's right, they did refresh it! That hinge design is so smooth and the newer e-ink display on the bottom is definitely a huge upgrade over the previous version. That being said, I still wasn't enjoying the touch screen keyboard as much as how iOS handles that kind of thing. Maybe I could get used to it with enough practice, but even with my iPad I make a ton of typos.
