directx doesnt need sli or nvlink, nor crossfire, directx12 splits load between gpus in a different way, but doesnt use the bridge on the motherboard or between gpus the support doesnt depend as much as on game developers or amd and nvidia as on microsoft who is the one responsible of making directx12 and windows to work and allow the proper function of the two cards sharing the load given directx 12 is not widely adopted and is still under heavy development, but is good to hear that you have a good experience with it, very encouraging, but still remains both expensive and complicated, if you go for two gpus you need a psu with 4 power cables for two gpus, you need a case big enough to fit the two gpus and enough airflow to keep both gpus cool, and always one works hotter than the other for the poor airflow i still dont recomend to buy 2 gpus to play games, is still more simple to run just one

well, search for the suggested cpu, see on intel if it comes with any form of 64 bit support, if it comes, you need to find the way to convert the windows xp to 64 bits remember that amd moved to 64 bits rather fast in 2005 but intel didnt, they sold laptops 32 bit only for many many years after, same for desktops until they adopted 64 bits from amd dont believe me, you can find that information by yourself, i bougth and assembled many pcs in that time, amd 64 bits even on semproms, but intel, not everywhere

xp is not 64 bits, you need to patch it to 64 bit, and that doesnt mean that games or apps will use 4 gbs also a old intel cpu most likely wl be 32 bit only 3 gbs

sli is dead, poor driver support and poot game developer support made sli dead same for crossfire and nvlink buy a single better gpu, sell the old one and forget the idea of have two gpus is better to have one gpu, less noise, less heat, less power cables, less power consumption and you could keep the psu you have now nee gpu, as good as your budget allows, a 2070super would be great

what ram did you bought? no one should buy ddr4 at 2133 these days, that is as slow as possible

the slot can be used for whatever you want, afik is just a pci express x416 slot running 4 pci express lanes and nothing more so any pci express card will connect normally if it fits inside it should work, the problem would be fit the hard drives and connect them, the psu inside the external case only has power cables for the gpu you would have to make alot of things to make it work

a hard disk can do 10 years sure, i have here one in use since 2008 but the hard disk after so long time in use becomes weird, noisy and ready to die spectacularly yes, a backup is important, but is more important to remove such old drives to avoid a bad surprise
