Hey guys, I'm having trouble with my AsRock C2550D4I board running my fileserver. The ethernet port sometimes seems to hang itself during "higher" network load. Only thing that helps at that point is a reboot. Does anybody have that board aswell and is experiencing similar problems? Has it something to do with the network driver? I've been running Arch Linux and FreeNas on it but it didn't make a difference. BMC and BIOS versions are up to date. Any help is highly appreciated! Let me know if you need any more information. You should also consider using ecc-ram. your cpu choice would then be highly reduced because a lot of consumer stuff doesn't support ecc.

Isn't RaidZ1 powers of 2 + 1 parity? Four drives wouldn't work, you could do RaidZ2 with 4 drives, so 4TB would be usable.

I'm pretty sure you can just install it on the new ssd without doing anything. As long as you are using your license only once at a time you should be fine. Just wipe the hdd after the new installation is finished.

Isn't this only the case when the failing drives are not in the same mirror? FreeNAS is very simple to set up due to it's webinterface and huge community. I'd have a look at their forums, I'm quite certain everything you need to know has been explained there a hundred times already

That would depend on your mainboard sata controller, your array type and your drives. Some hdd configurations are faster than others. I'm running 5 wd red drives in raidz6 (2 drive redundancy) and my entire gbit connection is directly writing on the disks, so 120 MB/s write. I really wouldn't recommend running ZFS without ECC-memory if you like your data. In this case you are not protected from bit flipping and your entire array can fail just like that. Be aware what you are getting yourself into: 5 In-memory data integrity in ZFS With your hardware, maybe a raid is not a bad way to go in order to avoid buying completly new gear. Cheers

I wouldn't recommend using a Rasperry Pi for a server since it's usb/ethernet controller is slow as balls. Tried it already, built a home server as well in the end. Zfs is great, but sometimes a little unflexible. If you have multiple hdds, your pool is limited by the smallest one and you have to rebuild your entire pool if you want to add a drive later on. It would be good to know, what you want to do with the server. Is it just for backup? Do you want to stream movies from it? How many users are going to access the server? Let us know if you need help...
