  1. I return with... underwhelming, and embarrassing news. While removing the drive didn't actually change the noise, it did help elucidate the cause. Idiocy. A fan that I was certain had died came back to life to make spooky noises and generally ruin my day. When I first ran the drive outside of the case, there was still another drive in the computer, so I attributed the sound to that. It was, infact, the death wails of a long abused fan. Thanks for your help gents. I now have two HDDs. Both of which work perfectly fine. I am, however, down a 6 inch fan.
  2. I'll move the hard drive out of the case now, and see. No can do on the video though, my phone is about as old as I am, and I don't have any other video/sound recording equipment that could pick it up with any clarity, or I would've included it in the original post.
  3. Again, it'd seem odd that the drive would inherit the same issue as the old drive, if it was an issue with the drive itself. Not discounting that possibility, just that I *had* briefly ran the drive to copy stuff over from the original, and it didn't suffer the issues that currently plague it, so it seems unlikely. I honestly wouldn't know how to go about doing this, if you could let me know, it might well be worth a shot. It's incredibly loud. Audible from outside the room. In all my years of interaction with computers, I have never had a drive make this much noise. Even broken ones were never as loud as this. A drive that makes a loud whirring/squealing sound that you can hear through a closed door in the hallway outside sets off all my alarm bells. Doubly so when it doesn't seem to co-inside with any change. My PSU and motherboard were changed weeks ago now, and this hard drive noise is relatively recent thing. Now the new one's doing it too? Seems suspect, honestly. I've just checked the site, and I'm actually running the most recent bios available, at least on gigabyte's site. F1, and there's been no updates since. I'm honestly stumped as to what could be causing this. Any help that can be provided would be appreciated. I'm just taking shots in the dark, and I don't like it.
  4. I'll look into updating the BIOS, but I just installed my motherboard a few weeks ago, after my PSU blew (Which is a big reason why I was more than a little frustrated to have something else to repair), so I'm a little doubtful as to it being the BIOS, or I should say I really don't want it to be the BIOS. I hate updating the BIOS. I'll look into maybe getting something a little more cushioned, but I'm struggling to figure out what could've caused it in the first place. The noise is, out of my HDD anyway, abnormal, so I've got a bad feeling about the whole thing, honestly.
  5. Hello guys. I've had an issue with my hard drive making a rhythmic whirring/clicking sound. It sounds almost like a motorbike accelerating, before hitting the breaks, then repeating. I tried fixing the issue, perhaps overzealously, by replacing the hard drive, only to have the new one make the exact same noise almost out of the box. I've tried changing both the SATA cable and socket, to no avail. The noise seems entirely unrelated to whether or not the drive is active, and seems to start when the computer is shaken/disturbed. For example, it once started when my phone, resting on top of the computer, buzzed. I've checked all the fans, and the optical drive, and I'm almost certain that the noise is coming from the hard drive. I have run both chkdsk and SMART tests on both drives, and no problems have been reported, yet shortly after swapping the drives, I received a BSOD with a memory_management error code. Any help would be appreciated. Attached is a screenshot containing most of my current computer specs. Other than that, my PSU is 750w, and the old HDD is a Seagate ST2000DM001.
