  1. The temperature itself it's much to worry about but for only feeding it 1.280v it's really high IMO. I originally had a Thermaltake Core P3 open case but switched to a Corsair 460x earlier this year. I have 3 120mm fans on the front as intake and one 120mm at the back as exhaust. I had 2 big fans at the top as exhaust at one point but found that it was disrupting airflow so I removed them. Temps were roughly the same in both cases. HERE is a link to my setup, it looks like this now but without the top fans.
  2. Since day 1 of owning my i7 8700K, it's always ran really hot even at stock speeds. Running completely stock, it get's to mid 70's running RealBench and mid 80's running at 4.7GHz all cores. I've tried 2 coolers so far, one being a Kraken x62 and the other being a Cryorig R1 Ultimate with similar results. I've swapped the PSU and changed cases as well. I'm using an offset voltage and after running benchmarks for several hours at 4.7GHz, it peaked at 1.280v which to me doesn't justify these temperatures when compared to other chips I'm seeing online. I'm starting to think that the issue is the TIM application but is there anything else I can test / check before keeping this CPU at stock? It sucks that I spent extra money on a decent cooler, Z board, and unlocked CPU for it to be running stock but if there's nothing I can do, I'll just leave it as is and possible delid once the warranty expires or just upgrade.
  3. High end air coolers have similar performance to high end AIOs and better durability. I had my Kraken x62 fail out of warranty and bought a Cryorig R1 to replace it and to be honest, the Cryorig actually cools a little bit better. I wouldn't worry about your AIO leaking, it rarely happens and since you've already purchase the AIO, I'd just stick with it.
  4. You're definitely not crazy, there's a pretty significant difference in temps without those fans. I guess I'll just keep it as is, hot air rises anyways.
  5. Up until yesterday fan setup looked like this. I decided to take out both top fans and noticed that my temperatures were a fair amount better without them. Looking back at my old configuration, I'm thinking that the top fan closest to the front of the case was exhausting the cold air being sucked in from the front fans, does anyone else agree? One of the reasons I removed the fans in the first place was that they were a really tight fit and the one directly above the CPU cooler was flexing the CPU power socket a little bit. Ideally, would it make sense to buy 1 low profile fan and put it directly above the cooler and leave the front slot empty or should I just leave it as is? I'm just trying to figure out what would be optimal for my setup in this case (Corsair 460x).

  7. So I have a Gigabyte Aorus z370 gaming 5 motherboard with 8 fans attached. I've downloaded Gigabyte's System Information Viewer utility to control fan speeds and profiles on the fly. I've noticed that for some reason the fan plugged into the HPWR_FAN connector cannot be set to less than 60% speed in System Information Viewer. I'm able to set it lower in the BIOS but I'd like to be able to do this on the fly using the utility in Windows. I can't seem to figure out why this happens and was curious if anyone has any ideas? I just came from liquid cooling and a Thermaltake Core P3 case so I didn't really have to deal with any fans on that build. Edit: Nevermind, I forgot to set control from voltage to PWM in BIOS.... oops.
  8. I was planning on getting my 8700k de lidded / resealed with thermal grizzly conductonaut but was curious if I would have to re apply the liquid metal over time or is it something that you can do once and then forget about it?

  10. After more testing, I can confirm that the Nvidia 430.86 drivers were causing it. Guess I'll stick to the old ones.
  11. Over the last week, I've been having a random WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE blue screens at different times. It's happened while editing pictures in photoshop, browsing the internet, and even moving the mouse when coming back to my PC. When I get these crashes, no crash dumps are ever able to be made so it's been hard to diagnose. Event viewer shows Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power w/ eventid 41. Reliability monitor shows hardware error "LiveKernelEvent" with code 141. Now I had this PC overclocked and it was used heavily without any errors for the last 4 months. Recently, I dropped it back to stock clocks using the same (adaptive) voltage so I don't think that's the issue. Temps are good. I tested RAM every night over the last few days and I did notice that 1 stick would get an error every now and then so I RMAd it thinking that was the issue. Well it's happened again twice tonight and I'm not sure what else to check. One interesting thing I realized was that I've been getting these crashes ever since installing the latest NVidia drivers, but I'm not sure if that would cause a WHEA error. I've uninstalled those drivers with DDU and installed the previous ones just now but is there anything else I could check in the meantime? The only two big differences I can recall since these started occurring were updating my nvidia drivers and updating to windows 10 1903 from a previous version.
  12. I agree, I made sure to check manual when I switched them last time. Between now and the first time I got 1 error a few months ago, I've spent A LOT of time on this machine playing games, editing photos and video ETC with no problems or crashes. If there is a RAM issues, what are the odds that the particular address wasn't used the entire time? I'm thinking pretty low but the consensus is that 1 error is too many.
  13. Channel A is 2/4 and Channel B is 1/3 according to manual. I ran Memtest86 for 4 passes with both sticks and I got no errors. It's going to really bug me knowing that It's happened before even if it's not a regular occurance.

  15. I'm going to run it overnight and see what happens. Isn't 1 error 1 too many though?
  16. So a few months ago I ran memtest and got 1 error after 12 hours or so. My system was stable so I didn't think much of it. Yesterday, I got whea uncorrectable error while duplicating a layer in Photoshop. I decided to run memtest64 and it came back with 1 error after 15 hours. I ran each stick on its on afterwards for 5 hours each and came back with nothing. Would it be safe to assume that because it came back with an error, the RAM is still to blame? Could there be anything else that could be causing errors in memtest? I don't run with an OC on my processor, but it is under volted. I've stressed for hours on end and it was stable. The only thing I have applied beyond the lower voltage is XMP. Like I mentioned, the system is stable 99% of the time and i really only had the 1 BSOD yesterday.

  18. It's pretty warm now but we got cold winters here in Canada and it was only a little lower. This is why I'm convinced that I lost the TIM lottery. There's a few other posts I've come across on other boards where people encountered the same kinds of temps with lower voltages. Luck of the draw I guess. Just to rule out cooler issues, I'm getting great idle temps with it, around 28c.
  19. I have the fans and pump set to "performance" mode in CAM.
  20. I've remounted it several times including re securing the back bracket and got around the same temps each time.
  21. So I'm convinced that my 8700k has an absolutely brutal TIM application under the IHS. I was running it at 4.7GHz all cores with 1.250v and getting 86c in RealBench after 30 mins w/ a Kraken x62 cooler. After 30 minutes on stock frequencies at the same voltage, I got a max of 72c which is much cooler. I use my PC mainly for games @1440p with a little bit of photo editing from time to time. I was just looking for some opinion on this but given my usage, should I just keep it at stock until I eventually de lid? I'm not really sure if that kind of temp increase is worth it.
  22. Going to go ahead and bump the voltage up, I'm only running at 4.7GHz.
  23. Hmm, I ran 20 hours of stress tests on it and it didn't crash. I'll try bumping the voltage a little and see if it's better. These aren't hard crashes I'm getting, just crashes to desktop
  24. I suspect it might have something to do with XMP. So let's say I run it multiple times today and come up with no errors, could there have been something that triggered that first error incorrectly? I did overclock my 8700k and it's been stable, but for my RAM I just set the xmp profile in BIOS and kept it as is. I might have to manually OC the RAM.
