  1. Hello. I would like to easily prioritize network traffic for specific applications on my debian machine. Do you guys know of any utility that can do that without touching the router or network switch? In the past I've found tc but I think that only works when you know the ip adresses which is retrieving data; then there is cgroups which isn't even in the repos anymore (old). So the redhat docs are pretty outdated and useless. Please, help
  2. Unless you have one of those shiny new gpus from intel or nvidia, you won't be able to hardware encode av1. Nvenc is the hardware encoder for HEVC. I'm not a researcher either so just by the fact that HEVC produces smaller video for the same quality, I'm using that. Just be aware that the less encoding you do the better. If your video is already the size you want and the compatibility checks out, there is not really any reason to encode. It's depending a lot on the situation and what you want to do with the video.
  3. Thanks these are some great resources. As it stands I'd be ok to spend between 1k-2k for such a cpu, if it can deliver. I have taken a look at server ish cpus but again, I dont know exactly if more cores is worse than more ghz, or if they would even be worth I want to switch to av1 in the future. What you are suggesting is hardware encoding which is absolutely fine for game streams and most media, but it also introduces a lot of artifacts and basically crunches your video quality. Again, its not easy to see the difference but once you see it, there is no going back (especially if you learn to appreciate high bitrates).
  4. Hello. I currently have a few outdated machines to handle some encoding projects. It was ok for the past year, but the home videos pile up and so do the performance greedy filters I want to use. What's currently the best CPU for video encoding? I mostly encode to HEVC at the moment, but would REALLY like to switch to AV1 once it's more wide-spread. Is it a bad idea to build a new system now? Should I wait a few more months? Or is AV1 actually so new, that you'd recommend to wait even longer? I don't really have any limit on the budget, so I've been looking around for some weeks now, but can't really find suggestions/guides. I guess video encoding is a pretty niche hobby. I wish linus would also do HEVC/AV1 benchmarks in his reviews, but I assume not enough people are interessted in that. ___ I've heard that core/ghz count doesn't really matter anymore, but at the same time I've also come across individuals claiming its GHz > Cores. Which one is more accurate?
  5. Hello, so I've had this issue since I bought the notebook back in 2019 but have since only used it for work (word, ...). The laptop can't play videos in the browser. When I try to play 4k blu-ray stuff via mpv it works totally fine, but trying to play even 1080p in brave/firefox does not. After just 1 min, twitch's video stats report more than 1k dropped frames. Looking at the task-manager, both GPU's are clearly being used -> https://imgur.com/KlVn3gP (GPU 2 does not exist, 1 being intel, 3 nvidia) Nvidia control panel is configured to use gpu3 for brave. I've been through many driver reinstalls and this is my last attempt before I'll finally remove my last windows install and just switch to linux entirely (if that should change anything). Do you guys have any recommendations? Razer System: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz 16GB 2133MHz Intel UHD Graphics 620 NVIDIA Geforce MX150
  6. Very helpful replies, thanks guys. @Electronics Wizardy I thought about going nvme but figured a motherboad that supports more than 10 m.2's would completely blow the budget. Are there even things like that? Also: I would hardly have space for server racks so I would much rather get something smaller, thus the question if such case even exists. @tkitch Currently I'd say 10 2.5 SATAs, even though I've found very affordable nvmes (amazon.de), its probably impossible to find equipment to run like 80 m.2 nvme drives. (lol) @mariushm Great idea (both, tape and refurbished parts), I honestly didn't think about refurbished cases. The one you've send seems very affordable but DDR3 doesn't sound that good. Will haunt that website for a few hours. There will definitely be something for me @LIGISTX I run software that does a lot of random reads and writes. On my current setup, copying a 10gb file takes almost an hour. I could split the array and have like only 2TB in ssds, but that's not even close to how much space I need.
  7. Hello, I am planning to build a new "server". My old synology is just not fast enough and can barely run plex so I am looking for an alternative. Unfortunately 45drives is just a little too overkill. I dont have the environment to house machines like that, so I was wondering if one of you knows a brand/company that builds computers cases for systems with many ssds/hdds. The software I have running does a lot of random reads and writes so hard drives aren't an option. Budget (including currency): < 2k (for case) Country: AT Workload: video encoding, probably vm, lots of random read/write OS: Arch Linux I am still debating on how many drives I'll actually buy, but it will probably be around 10~15 (2.5 SATA).
  8. Hm. I am not really sure. I have just found the exact drive model on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-Internal-Drive-3-5-Inch/dp/B07H289S7C You can buy that exact same version for internal use.
  9. Hello. I have recently tried to backup some stuff to one of my Seagate drives but some problems happened to come up. The drive is roughly 3 years old and was shuckled from one of these external enclosures. The model is a Barracuda Compute 8TB. The problem I have is kind of weird. When I try to copy files everything is fine until it hits ~5GB. Then the transfer speed drops to 0kb/s, and copies 5mb every 20min. My first thought: bad sectors, but then I chdsk-ed the drive on windows, which reported 0 problems. (the SMART test didnt show any problems either) When the drives copies, the usage is pinned to 100% and the latency (according to the task manager) goes up to like 20seconds. I dont really know how that is even possible. New partitions, wether internally nor externally (enclosure from amazon), nothing seems to help. Tested on windows 10 and linux. I have contacted the constumer support but they refuse to assist me if I am not using seatools (their drive-health manager) which doesnt even recognize the drive. PS: during those 0 read/write times, its not even possible to get any information from the drive: Linux fails to unmount it (forced shutdown required) and Windows takes hours to shutdown. And yes, I have tried to copy multiple files and only one big file. Do you gus have any ideas?
  10. I took the cooler master one. They offer free better keycap if requested. With the new new caps it should be easier to type. Thank you.
  11. Thats not what I am trying to say. I just like the compact and lowprofile look. The reason is that my keyboard is too loud. Thank you for sharing these keycaps, but I would like to have a new keyboard, that I could also use with my laptop.
  12. Thank you. Yes I have already look at those, but they are little to wide compared to the cooler master ones and 200$???
  13. Hello. For 2-3 years I am using the corsair k95 platinum. It is a very cool and easy to use keyboard. The only thing I don’t like, is the sound. Although I am using rubber rings, its extremely loud, and people in voice chats immediately get annoyed. So, I searched for low profile ones. After some days I found the keychron k1. It’s perfect. Literally. There is nothing better. The problem: I am German and there is no German layout available. I watched a few videos and heard that the very similar cooler master sk650 are terrible to write with. Is it possible to just swap the z and y keys, on the k1, to match my layout? A more elegant use would be just buying a German layout keyboard. What I am looking for, is low-profile, numpad, RGB, silent, compact (no need for media keys, sk650 like). I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me out. Have a nice day.
  14. Hello I just got the Razer Blade Stealth 13 (early) notebook. As in the title said, it wont charge when its turned off. Yes turned off, not sleep. I have been writing with the support since 2 weeks but after reinstalling some drivers and changing stuff in the bios they told me I should send it in. I have not tried resetting the laptop, that shouldnt be the problem. I also dont know if this problem was out of the box. Everything else works like a charm. The light is not on when turned off and cable in. I have also switched to the default powerplan. I have tried both charging ports. Please dont demotivate me with telling me how bad razer is. Now I am asking you guys, the real specialists. Laptop: Razer Blade Stealth 13 (early 2019) with 512gb.
