Pickles von Brine got a reaction from da na in Remembering DiabloTek power supplies - how did this garbage company go out?
I remember working at microcenter and literally a pallet of diablotek power supplies sat in the BYO department. I made it my mission to prevent people for buying them. I went so far as to get into trouble with management. XD
but main thing was these power supplies were the biggest pieces of shit I have ever seen. They could not do their advertised wattage, did not follow the atx spec and were basically firestarters.
however, I could not find what happened to them in the end. Like, how they went out? Did their business fail or did something else force them? Or was it something else.
god these things were a blight.

Pickles von Brine got a reaction from Bombastinator in Can anbody get the dimensions for the screwdriver "shorty" bits
I have found trying to find these bits outside of LTT store is a daunting task. If I look for 1/4" Hex 20mm I do not find many of these kinds of bits. Half height 1/4" hex bit doesn't; result much either.

Seriously though he is likely working on another project. Them busy people at LTT.

Pickles von Brine got a reaction from Dr_Whom in Alex & Tynan - A Recipe For Disaster
I didn't think they were behaving recklessly. They kept their distance, didn't stuck their hands in anywhere, showed why capacitors are dangerous and didn't do anything stupid. From my standpoint they were treating the big box of death with respect. Did they seem cavalier, sure but they weren't being stupid. And they did mention and show why what they were messing with was dangerous.

Note that most laptops nowadays don't have a CMOS battery anymore, they keep time from the main battery since it's non-removable anyway.

Pickles von Brine got a reaction from YaBoiiGeorge in Extreme Audio Issues - Tried so many different audio mixers?
Have you tried using different cables?
You know, a part of me is thinking maybe the headphones are at fault? Have tried just anything other than the cans you have now?
Another part of me is questioning maybe if there is a CPU issue? It is really strange this only happens under load.
It may even be related to power. Maybe a bad power supply?
I remember years ago E-Machines would have horrible USB issues because of bad power supplies. Part of me is thinking maybe because the system is under load, something itsn't kosher with the power delivery leading to unexpected and unexplained behavior.

Pickles von Brine reacted to Sloptok in Upgraded CPU no Post, Downgraded again no Post
Well well well, if it isn‘t my arch nemesis, lackluster quality control. The shelf part above the metal rod is bent upwards at a sligth angle. I guess the part bent after moulding while cooling off.
The T shaped parts haven‘t been ripped off vertically, they were sheared to the side hanging from a sliver of plastic, but nontheless touching them slightly was enough to detach them.
I found quite a lot of troubleshooting threads with similarly broken socket covers, most of them from Gigabyte and all with the Lotes AM4 cover. But every time they tried to RMA the boards, Gigabyte claimed, that the damage was on the user side. But noone could have possibly seen, that the cover was bent upwards slightly from the beginning.
So, while I was engaging the locking mechanism for the first time 3 years ago, the pins must have already been sheared off and I was maybe just lucky, everything seated correctly in the first place with the 3700x.
Now the fun part begins: I‘ll try to glue them back on tomorrow. Otherwise I’ll buy a new cover.
I‘ll update the thread if that does the trick.

Pickles von Brine reacted to LogicalDrm in Where did Ethan go?
If he's not on the roster, then it's none of our business. Companies let people go either on employee decision or company decision. Neither is none of our need to know as viewers.
He's not on the list btw.

Pickles von Brine reacted to TetraSky in Why can't LTT read Superchats but GamersNexus can?
If they sent a superchat expecting it to be read, that's on them. Lots of creators don't read them on stream at all. Especially regular streamers who play games. They don't have time to do so.
If they donate money with the expectation of getting something in return, then they shouldn't be donating and simply buy something on the store.
As for turning it off.... Why would they? It's another option for people to donate money to them. Actual regular viewers would KNOW they don't read superchats. If they're not a regular, there's no reason to just randomly donate. It's been this way for months now.

As stated above mixing and matching timings can cause problems. A buddy of mine just recently had similar issues. His system wouldn't even boot like@Holmes108stated.

Pickles von Brine reacted to LAwLz in MOV to MP4
I would recommend against using Handbrake.
If you use Handbrake, chances are you will transcode the video.
What I would recommend is using FFmpeg.
1) Download FFmpeg from this link.
2) Extract the file called ffmpeg.exe which can be found under inside the "bin" folder.
3) Hold ctrl and right click on an empty space in the folder.
4) Select "open PowerShell window here", or maybe yours says cmd or command prompt.
5) Type this into the CLI window that opens:
.\ffmpeg.exe -i .\example.mov -c copy test.mp4
replace example.mov with the filename of the video you want to convert.
You will now have successfully converted your .mov file into a .mp4 file with 0 quality loss, and it should only have taken like 1 second to complete.
If you use Handbrake it might take hours, and it will result in a quality loss.

Pickles von Brine got a reaction from ZROCK in How do I boot into safe mode with no display at all?
Your welcome. Glad it was something with Windows. I was a bit worried it could have been something more serious. I have had Windows just... break. Black screen and nothing. no safe mode, no signs of life. Yet a clean install works fine.

A. The schedule is a target, not a guarantee.
B. There was a major industry show today from Intel. On days like this, its common for uploads to be 10-12hrs late while they compile the news from it, script out what they want to talk about, shoot it, edit it, upload it etc...

Pickles von Brine got a reaction from da na in Hard drive not showing
If it isn't showing up then it is one of 3 things:
1) drive isnt properly connected or the port it is plugged in to doesn't support the drive
2) There is an issue with the port or the cable being used
3) There is an issue with the drive itself.
Hard drives can just die. They will show up in bios but not in disk management.
Does the drive show up in task manager?

Pickles von Brine got a reaction from Budget DIY in Post your HDD lifespan (bragging topic)
I don't have proof but when I was a data recovery engineer I had a set of server drives with well over 130k hours. They were in a raid 5 and had 2 drives that were badly degraded. The other 2 drives were degraded but not nearly as bad. I did end up recovering most of the data though it was a bit of a pain in the ass.

Pickles von Brine got a reaction from BlackDragon1971 in i7 6700k + gtx 1070
You are good man. Just enjoy your games. System is a little old by modern hardware standards but who cares?
Answer these 3 questions:
Does my system work?
Does it play the games I like?
Does it play the games I like well?
If you answer yes then be happy with what you got.
You can dive down the rabbit hole of this and that (trust me I did for a long time) but you get to a point of just being satisfied with what you have. The only reason I have the computer I have now is because I had a 7 year old processor at the time that had a dying motherboard, I wanted a GPU upgrade and I had the money. I bought the CPU, motherboard and RAM first. Then when the 3000 series came out I managed to snag one at a good price. Sold my 1070 to a good friend of mine for cheap and he has been happy like a hog in slop.
My old system played all the games I had at 1080p just fine. Now I have a 4k monitor and a 3070. Am I happy? Yes I am.
Am I eying the 4000 series? You bet I am. Will I upgrade? Likely not. If the opportunity presents itself? I might.
The key is keeping perspective and keeping your head out of the weeds.
Also, as the second poster said. Ignore the calculator stuff. You got a good balanced system.

Pickles von Brine got a reaction from da na in PSA: MacOS/Mac OSX Monterey External Drive Issues - Slow to mount, unmount or format
You have a damaged file system bud. As you said yourself. It got damaged after not ejecting properly. Do you know why OSX requires you to eject the disk instead of ripping it out? When OSX is using a drive, it isn't just sitting there doing nothing when the drive isn't in use. OSX is constantly updating file system components and they are hooked by the OS. When you yank a drive while OSX is using these file system components you run the risk of damaging them. In this case, that is what happened.
Nothing to do with the OS. I am surprised it opened on an ipad.
The drive isn't damaged. It is the file system that is. This isn't the fault of the OS. It is the fault of the user for yanking the drive while it was in use. Sorry to say it. Each time a drive is yanked on OSX you run the risk of this. Regardless of the file system but especially so for FAT32 and ExFat drives. NTFS, APFS and HFS have resiliency but kick out the right leg and they will corrupt too. Not all file corruption is repairable. Make sure you eject the drives properly.
When you have a damaged file system most cases OSX is useless in fixing it. Software is required. However, in some cases the file system cannot be saved and a raw recovery has to be done.
The fact you loss data also shows weaknesses in your data handling strategies. It would be best to look into and possibly revise them to avoid this in the future.

Pickles von Brine reacted to Neroon in Has anyone successfully heard back from LTT Store support?
I have heard from them before, and they gave me a gift card in a situation where they didn't need to.
I recently contacted them, and it took about 2 weeks to get a reply. This was btw from someone new afaik, so they are hiring new people for it.
I will say that aside from order specific questions, Linus has been on the forums here as well to answer a lot of general questions, and a lot of that has been what I can only assume is outside of his 'regular' work hours.
They are obviously trying, and I still think they offer quality support, they just really need to get the response time to a max of a few work days, and since they are hiring and admitting to slow responses, I can only assume that this is their goal.

Pickles von Brine got a reaction from BiotechBen in i7 6700k + gtx 1070
At 1080p you become CPU bound and mainly at frequency. However, even so you are fine. I rocked a 3770k @ 4.5 and a 1070 until Ryzen 3000 came out. I did get a nice bump in performance but it was like 10-15 FPS? Don't worry so much about bottlenecks. Just build a PC with what you can and enjoy it. Take this from someone who has been building and repairing computers for 17 years.
I don't even worry about bottlenecks when I build my systems. I grab a good processor, slap in a good video card, good ram and board. Grab a reliable power supply and an SSD and call it a day.
