Hey guys... I'm hoping someone around here could help me with this. I know it's not a computer thing but I still need help. I've posted on different forms around the internet with no responses...
So my dad gave/lent me a Samsung TV a couple days ago that he bought as the store display at Sam's Club a few years ago. Everything else works fine on it except when you plug anything into any of the HDMI ports, only the picture comes through, no sound. I know the TV's speakers work fine because when you tinker with the settings or play something through Smart Hub or color component the sound is fine.
So, at my dad's advice I went out to Walmart and bought a cheap-ish sound bar so that I could use as an external speaker. I can't hook it up to the TV's output because even when being used as a speaker no sound still comes through the HDMI ports. So I connected it directly to my DISH Joey box. Great, now I have a 1080p TV connection and sound! I should be happy right?
Well the problem is I don't really watch TV, I mostly only watch YouTube with a little bit of Netflix. In my family's living room the DISH Hopper box has the YouTube app on it that I use to watch with but my dad doesn't want me "hogging" the living room anymore. Unfortunately the Joey boxes in our rooms don't support YouTube playback and I found out that the Samsung SmartHub stopped supporting the YouTube app last June. (A really frustrating realization I made).
So I went back out and bought the cheapest Roku I could find, a $29 "Express HD-New". I excitingly hooked it up and set it up and downloaded the YouTube app... Only to realize I had to sound... Oh wait... The HDMI ports don't work (insert my face palm here).
This Roku literally only has an HDMI port and the power cable in the back. So there's no hooking it up to my new sound bar. My first instinct was to buy a cord that was HDMI to HD component (the red, blue, green one), but when I was looking up cords is says they only work if your device can convert digital to analog...
So... What do I need to do/buy here? I'm hoping I don't have to buy some little $30 converter box that costs as much as my Roku itself so that I can hook it up. What are my options? Is there something obvious that I am missing? Is there a way to simplify this whole thing? Please help. I can provide model numbers if need be.
