  1. Noip just gives you a name to your home ip. You would need to allow it in through your router. I would setup port forwarding on the router and then the firewall on the host, only allow access to that port from ip addresses that I want to access it and not the entire internet. That would be the simplest way of doing it. Can run it through a reverse proxy as well, but that makes it more complicated.
  2. Not to mention them they have access to the ops network.
  3. Any older generation stuff is going to take more power. That is going to be up to you depending on how much your energy costs if it is worth it to you.
  4. Ah, that is cool. I didn't know they were sold like that. Might need to look into getting one of those for my backup NAS instead of a mini pc.
  5. I run a mini pc that has an n100 that runs windows as the host and virtualize truenas and pass in the drives from a 5 bay orico enclosure and that seems to work well. If there are mini pcs that can take multiple sata that could work but I haven't seen any, hence the enclosure and the need to run it virtualize under windows to get the usb enclosure to be stable.
  6. If Jellyfin can use the igpu, and you are only doing one or two steams at a time, that should be fine.
  7. Yeah. I have a pretty unique use case. The only reason I didn't go the spare parts way is if it goes down while I'm working I don't want to take that time and troubleshoot the issue right then but delay it till later. The spares that I have would be a full platform change and that would take some time.
  8. I should also clarify that my truenas in a vm on windows hasn't really had issues in over 4 years it's been running.
  9. I mainly did it that if the main one goes down all I need to do is switch the iscsi connections for my vms and be back up and running right away (albeit with slower performance) without taking the time to fix the primary and very to it when I can. I use mine for work data and losing 1 day of data while it is out isn't a concern.
  10. I have always had weird issues with using apps or jails in truenas with less control over them. This was one reason I switched to virtualize truenas under windows and passing through the drives.
  11. I agree with this. I wouldn't recommend storage spaces for raid though. I never managed to get good performance that way. I setup truenas on a vm in hyper v and then just pass through the disks. Been running that way for over 5 years now and hasn't been a problem. Just need to create a scheduled task for reboot and shutdown so that Truenas stops correctly before the host os.
  12. A wireless service would probably be even worse. You can look into reverse proxy like ngrok that might be able to expose it to the net that way.
  13. I am doing this now. I have one main truenas system that runs 2 vms and is iscsi storage target for a vm server. Then I have a mini pc running windows that has a truenas vm and passing in the drives from a 5 disk usb enclosure that gets nightly syncs from the main machine. I know a lot of people in the truenas community hate the usb connection but it has been running well for about 2 years now. Thinking of doing a write up on how to make the mini pc setup as it is a cheaper way to make a NAS if you are tight on budget.
  14. How is the ssd connected? If it is a sata drive that sounds about right. What happens if you copy a file to that drive over the network instead of d? That green drive I think is your problem.
  15. Not sure how that would work. I just bought mine through cloudflare and turned off their proxy stuff. You can get a domain from them for a low as 6 usd per year which includes privacy on the registration and ssl.
  16. Oh yeah, it works great for me. When I am at any of the health care places here I can only VPN home on 443. With haproxy I route the VPN traffic over 443 then to the server. No problems with it ever since I did it.
  17. No, both ways you only need one domain. Without a reverse proxy your need to specify different ports which can be confusing for end users and some services might not like using non standard ports. With a reverse proxy you can have all services using the standard ports and the sub domain specifying the different services. Ie domain.com for a basic web site Then nextcloud.domain.com for an installation of next cloud.
  18. Correct. I use haproxy on mine and it will check requests against a text file with allowed ips and only let them through if it matches and if not it appears like nothing is there. I used to use nginx but switched to haproxy since it can handle tcp streams not just http.
  19. Also with a reverse proxy you can limit connection rates as well as what ip addresses. I use mine to VPN through on port 443 and my websites can only be accessed through Cloudflare.
  20. Even though you don't have experience with Linux, I would try truenas scale. It is free and can (not recommend) use single drives. It is also pretty easy to setup and there are a lot of tutorials on it that you can find on YouTube.
  21. Those cards won't work with hardware transcoding. The amd card might but that is something you would need to test or the cpu would need to do it. Are you planning to stream outside of your home? If not, your van use direct play and not need the gpu at all for transcoding.
  22. Look up either pfsense or opnsense. Both work great. Been using opnsense myself for a while now and love it. If you are a beginner and aren't running the newest hardware I would recommend pfsense as there is more support content for it.
  23. Asus does sell an ipmi card but does not look like it is compatible with that motherboard. I have been using pikvm and that has been working great. You can build it on a stand along box or a form factor that will use a pcie bay in the case. I have this https://www.amazon.com/Geekworm-KVM-A3-Raspberry-Compatible-Include/dp/B0B5R37TT3/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=Pikvm&qid=1706583786&sr=8-1 With a pi 4 8gb and have had zero issues with it. With that you can control the machine just like you were there just need to plug it into your outputs.
  24. I like the 4 nic ports too. But you petri much need to 3d print a case for that.
  25. Should be able to see that under "view network connections" The other thing you can try is to disable the firewall on the hosting machine and see if that is blocking it.
