I hear carrots are good potato substitutes. /s

I don't think I've seen people use potatoes for making stock, won't it be all mushy in the end? I guess that's why people use celery and carrots; they maintain their shape better.

Stews, on the other hand, can have potatoes I guess.

yeah, it was just a thought as I don't have many carrots and thought "potatoes are also root vegetables maybe I could use those" as I really don't feel like going to the store to get stuff for the stock

I never made stock before, so I don't know if that's the reason, but seeing as to how you gotta strain the stock at the end, having mushy stuff will just make a mess I guess.

    themaniac

yeah, I assume that's the reason as well

Not sure what chicken stock is but looking at the pictures it looks like soup to me and we use potatoes all the time in chicken soup. It tastes nice and it doesn't become mushy at all. You just gotta put it in big chunks or whole.

You cook stock for a few hours afaik, will the potatoes survive that long?

I'm not the one usually making it but if the carrots survive then the potatoes should have no problem.

Also, looking more into this stuff, stock is basically soup but you separate the liquid and the rest of the stuff? Do I get that right?

Your basically stealing the flavor from food and putting it into the water, it makes adding more flavor to things easier because you can just use it instead of plain water. Though soup is probably the most common use for it

Seems like a lot of work for something that's so cheap to buy.
