I have an rm1000 powering my gtx 780 sli system and that psu even on full load is basically silent. I can't hear it compared to any of my other fans 

so that nvidia can smash the hell out of them

This has been really enlightening.  Thank you all for the help.  I've decided to go for an R9 285 card.  Frankly, they are all competitively priced, and the small difference (in price) between them isn't a big factor to me.  As @MoonSpot recommended, I've considered the I/O, the look, and importantly, the noise for these cards.  But, it's kind of tough to judge noise because, for some unknown reason, there are very few reviews for all the 285 cards.  Does anyone know why?
 
Anyway, I've narrowed it to these four.  Any insight or comments would be appreciated:
 
ASUS STRIX-R9285DC2OC2GD5 Radeon R9 285 - $249.99 (Newegg Link).  Most expensive, but the only one with a backplate, which looks pretty awesome.  Not many reviews to judge it.



SAPPHIRE 100374OCL Radeon R9 285 2GB - $229.99 (Newegg Link).  Best reviewed, albeit, only 6 reviews.  People report that it is silent, which is very important to me.  Looks pretty good - black PCB, which is nice.



Gigabyte Radeon R9 285 2GB WINDFORCE 2X Video Card - $214.99 (Newegg Link).  Again, this looks pretty good and is cheaper than the two above.  I also see a lot of Windforce cards in the "check out my setup" threads and Linus apparently handled it / stared at it in that video MoonSpot linked.  But, it has one scathing review (out of only 3) concerning heat and noise.  Is the review potentially an outlier?

 
 
PowerColor AXR9 285 2GBD5-TDHE Radeon R9 285 - $199.99 (Newegg Link).  Clearly the cheapest.  It also has the most reviews, but there are some pretty negative comments out there.  I'm hesitant to buy the cheapest just for the sake of saving $10-20.

Take that Verge article lightly.  Reading it over, I notice Dan has quite a fanboyism towards the iPad in this article.  It is so obvious, that it makes it hard to believe that article.

10/10 fantastic acting and concept

I jumped on a second one of these. Having to sell my 780 and spend more money on the 970/980 didn't really appeal to me so SLI it is.

true 8 powerphase board with digi vrm, 10k black caps highcurrent chokes.
Best overclockers friendly bios (personal opinnion) intel lan, nice onboard audio.
 
But basicly every decent Z97 board will be okay for most people.
Just dont go to cheap.

thank god, that new logo was butt ugly.
 
the Corsair boat was one of the things I liked about them, they had a nice logo that I would rank up with Fractal tier.
i feel bad for who designed it though.

This is my complete personal opinion.... The old pirate ship logo worked very well.

Hook and loop velcro cable ties. Blew my mind and I'm never using zip ties again!

If they didn't constantly strive to make it so thin then maybe this wouldn't be a problem. I seriously don't know why you would want such a thin phone. I find them really uncomfortable to hold.

I for one will miss the fella as a Newegg host, seen him on the product overviews for a long time.
 
Seems that he is trying to go the way of Linus and fly solo with some contracting back in vids etc, good luck to him but the decision doesn't fill me with confidence.

No way can a single R9 270x Max out AAA titles on ultra even at just 1080, and its utterly useless above that!
 
I have a 780ti so I can play games on Ultra at 1440p at 60fps

on my desk. Way less dust and it looks pretty there.
