It's my old PC from about 2010 which I replaced a couple of years ago with my current main rig. I have it set up in my bedroom for Netflix and running Steam Link. Basically, every time I install an OS on it, after a couple of weeks the installation becomes slow, corrupted and unstable until eventually it won't boot. I've used Windows 7, Windows 10, and Manjaro Linux and they all do the same thing. I've also tried using different SATA cables, different HDDs, SSDs, and different RAM and it makes no difference. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what else might be causing it or easy fixes (like BIOS settings) before I take it down to the dump. Asus M3A78 Pro Phenom II 965 quadcore GTX 560 Ti 750W PSU Gracias!

His work on black holes will be his most enduring legacy, but I think his biggest contribution to the world during his lifetime was A Brief History of Time and his role in popularising cosmology. We are all smarter because of him.

Why aren't per-core clock speeds more of a thing?
Apepa replied to Apepa's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
It would be nice if they could officially rate one of the cores at 5GHz first. Wasn't the 9590 the only CPU rated to hit 5GHz stock? -

My choice of words: "Per-core clock speeds" as opposed to "Per-core overclocking" was deliberate. -
Why aren't per-core clock speeds more of a thing?
Apepa replied to Apepa's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
I'm not really talking about consumer-end oveclocking here. The idea is, my CPU's default clocks are 4GHz on each core at a stock voltage of 1.11. I know that 3 out of my 4 cores will be stable at 4.3GHz at that voltage, and I'm probably not the only one, so why not just set those cores to run at higher clock speeds before they leave the factory? By ignoring the deficiencies of just one core, you improve overal performance of the SKU and potentially chip yields. -
So we all know Intel's turbo feature boosts certain cores to higher clock speeds than others on the die depending on the circumstances and the quality of each core. What I don't get is why they (and AMD) don't just clock each core differently according to its ability in order to maximise performance, since this is what happens under Turbo boost anyway. I'm currently running an 8350K @4.9GHz, and the first thing I noticed while setting up my overclocks is that one of my cores is very unstable at lower voltages compared to the others, and all I can think about is how awesome it would be if I could just leave that one at a lower speed and clock the others well over 5GHz. So why isn't this a common feature with CPUs?

Build new pc cpu core idle temp too high?
Apepa replied to Zeyn21's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
I realise that English is not your first language, but it's very difficult to figure out what it is you are asking. The temps in the gif you included are all nearly 30C which is better than normal. Your max CPU temp is 60C which is also pretty normal for a CPU to hit during startup. -
i haven't played any of them since MW3 (not counting MWR). I'm sad that the franchise has now been bad for much longer than it was good. COD4 was one of the greatest games ever made.

There's usually a jumper on the board, if not you can just pull the battery out. Unplug it, cycle the power a few times to eliminate any remaining electricity in the motherboard, remove battery/jumper for a few seconds. This will reset CMOS.

GTX 1060 Strix OC 6GB underperforming in gaming?
Apepa replied to BalaBalance's topic in Graphics Cards
@BalaBalance Download MSI Afterburner, that will show you what your GPU/CPU usage levels are when you're playing. It will also be easier to help you if we have more info on what is going on. EDIT: Is your copy of Windows activated? -

It looks good to me. Only one thing I would say is you could spend an extra 15-20 on a better CPU cooler to bring it up to the price you had originally. Would also help you get a little more out of that 8600k -

Apepa replied to MisterVince333's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
For sure. For 1-4 threads, an 8600k @ 4.2Ghz will be the same as a 7700k @4.2GHz For more than 4 threads an 8600k will beat a 7700k even at stock speeds. Older games (like GTA V) don't really use more than 4 threads effectively, but newer games will, making the 8600k a better option for the future. -

https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3157-intel-i5-8600k-review-overclocking-vs-8700k-8400/page-2 At stock clocks the 7700k is faster in some games because of the higher base clock speed. The 8600k will be better for future games, and will match the 7700k at the same clock speeds. There's no point getting a K series CPU if you don't overclock. The extra threads on the 7700k are meaningless, since hyperthreading is significantly slower than having real physical cores. http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/intel-core-i5-8600k-processor-review,7.html -

@MisterVince333 The 8600k is currently going for 220 Euro on Amazon.de, and Amazon.co.uk. Makes much more sense than a 7700k for 273 Euro. Same ore faster in games, much better for multithreading. Z270 supports 6th and 7th gen CPUs. Z370 supports only 8th gen CPUs. -
IKR. The issue I have now is that without V-sync I get really bad tearing whenever there's flashing lights. Do you know of a fix for this or were you just using a high refresh rate monitor?

@-TesseracT- I found the problem. I had V-Sync forced on to "fast". Once I turned that off, GPU usage went up and I'm hitting 200fps at 4K. Still really odd for it to be doing that, though.

I have no idea, it goes up to a maximum of 190 fps in some places, but the FPS I get seems to depend on where I'm standing, even if hardware usage doesn't change.

Here's a screenshot. GPU at 20% VRAM: 1316 MB (out of 6GB) CPU at 36%, RAM 6487MB (out of 24GB) and only 49FPS.

They're not really cut scenes, they're scripted animations, the player still has control of the camera and character movement during them.

Hey, So I installed Dead Space, which is a title I bought a number of years ago and never finished for whatever reason (I also have a copy of Skyrim with the plastic still on). I was just wondering if anyone knows if the game uses a frame limiter that kicks in during scripted sequences? My FPS dips down to around 45 during these sequences, the GPU usage dips down to only 16%, and the CPU never goes over 58% (with a bunch of stuff on in the background). Is this because the animations are keyed to frames rather than real time, or is this something on my end?
