There isn't a single person posting in this thread (myself included) that has any idea what NVidia is planning to release, and when.  No one.  Anything you've read thus far is pure speculation based on nothing more than assumptions.  The most accurate thing posted is, "and GTC is coming up"; that's typically when NVidia announces new GPUs for the market.

Until then, it's speculation.  Nothing more.  @manikyath has the best advice:  If you want something now, buy what's available now.  If you can wait indefinitely, then wait.  Something new will always be right around the corner.

Guys why are you raging that a guy from company that hires 140 people as of 2017 is saying that making AAA is expensive? It is, for them its VERY expensive.

They are 3x smaller than CDPR (which is considered small in comparison to the giants), of course AAA games are going to be expensive for them.

Even Witcher3 cost CDPR $81mil to make which they paid from their own pockets, do you think they would be around making 2077 if that did not pan out?

Reserve your sarcasm when Ubisoft/EA make those claims.

sigh, this is VERY old news that you should be well aware of at this point. This has been an on-going issue for nearly the past year.. its nothing new and has been beaten to the head about 1,000 times. Quick search would have revealed this as I am sure there were several other threads about this in the past week or 2 as well.

The local IT suggestion was an H81 motherboard for 110€ (assembly included) but I can find the same one for 41€ on amazon, it might not be a High end one but good luck finding a new one for cheap (talking about z97).

At this point in time ( even if money is not a problem ) I'd prefer to limp my way towards a new generation of cpus and gpus, everything is working fine I can game I can browse and everything mildly intensive so theres no worry.

fear92 reacted to Grimfrost769 in Early 2018 has to be the worst time to build a gaming rig..
We all know of the GPU issues plaguing the community right now. This has people in fits! Miners buying multiple GPUs and cleaning out stock of big box stores. On top of that there is a scalping issue when a stock becomes available it is immediately sold out and relisted on a site with less traffic with a pretty good percentage markup. People are hoping the release of Volta cards will provide a relief. But, really...how much is that going to effect supply of previous gen cards? They are already bled out to the point people are holding their breaths and waiting for prices to come down for months. Some hope for March(not happening) and some think May-June, realistically.

Then you have the spectre and meltdown issues for Intel CPUs. Patches affecting performance of CPUs. Intel kind of being scummy about it. Intel went from “should not be significant” to “may initially be higher” to “significant” in the space of a week.

Compile all this with the already explosive growth of PC gaming popularity, crypto-currency boom, and memory shortages...andddd we have $1400 GTX 1080ti's that are already sold out within minutes maybe even seconds of being posted.

Is there a worse time to build a new rig?

Some shops just want your money...
Yesterday I had a fight with my sytem, becase it was locking up with 3 or 4 cores active, but it was running fine with 1 or 2. Hyperthreading didn't matter. I thought I fried the 3rd core, but when I plugged in a different HDD, it worked. 4 cores and all!
So I reinstalled windows on the main drive, and started reinstalling all my stuff. Unexpectedly, after a restart, it locked up again. Turns out the "easy OC suite" included with the motherboard completely crashes the system!
If I was less techy, I'm sure I'd have ordered a ryzen by now.
So you can't trust tech shops, nor the gigabyte ultra durable team.

After they suggested an H81M motherboard from Asrock for the price of 95€ plus installation (the motherboard retails for 45€ on Amazon) I brought home my poor hunk of metal defeated.

Welp, since I was at it and I had the time I decided to unscrew everything, remove Ram, Gpu, every single cable and put some new thermal paste on my cpu, and yeah, it works.

My take from this is that, if for no reason your pc won't start, after determining that the Psu, Ram, Gpu or whatever drive you have installed are not at fault, and you've determined that the culprit is the motherboard, you should try and start over (minus cable management, I wouldn't even dare to untangle everything after all the work I've done).

So yeah, thank you tech shop for not testing the motherboard alone, after I've suggested so.

Yep s1150 has been dead for close to 3 years now, so limited stock is just something that gradually happens. The 4690K doesn't really have much value anymore to begin with since the i5-8400 and 8600K released. I'd just jump to a new platform and sell off the remaining unusable parts (like the RAM).

Honestly Z87 and Z97 boards new are an incredibly shitty buy. Either sell what you have working and upgrade to Coffee Lake or get a used Z97 board

The Arizonian guy is just completely wrong. I don't know what he was really trying to do.

The recommended from Nvidia comes from them wanted to cover their asses so you don't pair a 240W OEM HP unit made of wrapping paper and Tic-Tacs with a GTX 1080. A 1080 with one 8-pin connection can draw a MAXIMUM of 225W on its own (75W from PCIe and 150W from a 6+2 pin connection) and aftermarket cards with more power connections still won't allow the card to draw much more than 225W on its own.

Your 4690K is a very power-efficient CPU and might draw 150W if you overclocked the snot out of it.

So to suggest that a 500W unit of decent quality is "risky" is silly. It's literally impossible to draw that much with your current hardware + 1080.

Much appreciated, even if it was an interesting discussion to follow I understand that it went a little overboard.

Thanks for the reassurance, I always thought that 750w might have been an oversized safety net.
