If you read the original post properly you'll see that the OP already has Windows 8, which is prompting them to upgrade to 8.1. You don't get this sort of notification in Windows 7.

@Laksen - Yes just upgrade. I don't see why people are holding back on it - it only brings benefits.

@Vitalius - This forum isn't the best for this type of question on (real, i.e. not enthusiast) networking. I suggest you try another forum.

Anyway, it may be a limitation with the DNS Server role. It might not be possible without 3rd party software but I can't help you with that.

1+2) It might but I would try and get the 512 model personally, you CAN upgrade the SSD but they are PCI ssds and are very expensive, those SD card expansions are quite useful but not fast enough for an OS

If you can I would try and not use bootcamp, but its there if you need it I guess , Parallels is a better way to dual boot windows though as you can use windows at the same time as using OSX

    3) Personally yes, the retina macbook pro is nigh on un-repairable and apple have great support for software and hardware

    4) not necessarily no, you are best just crossing that bridge later

    macpro622776 got a reaction from Mdgtman91 in DELL optiplex 780 $450 upgrade ?
Contrary to what @Karumu has said, I'd save up. This is because you can't really upgrade the machine.

The Dell OptiPlex line is a workstation grade line which therefore uses some proprietary parts, including the PSU and motherboard. I don't know what form factor is yours because they came in four different sizes, but there's a chance that even upgrading the graphics card won't work unless you find a low form factor card (it won't fit).

Upgrading the PSU is definately a no-no as you won't find one that fits in the same space. Same thing with the motherboard. These systems were designed to be in a fleet where consistency across systems is required.

So to reiterate what I've already said, save up. Having said that though, these systems were built to last, and can last for ages if you look after it. I'm using an OptiPlex 745 myself, which is roughly 7 years old now, running Windows 8.1 Pro and still going strong.

My rant for the day: (not from your reply, I like the way you structured your statement, although I would have added, that anyone claiming that Windows or Linux or anything else is the best is in the same boat. If there was a best, I think the whole world would be on the same page.)

The way I see it (my opinion, not EVERYONES) is that when people are attacking Apple for what appears to be no reason, there is good reason to defend Apple or at least call that person out for reasoning. This isn't because you hurt my ego (ow...), but for people out there looking to forums to help others, to be informed, and not to prove that anything they don't like is garbage. Just opening one's mouth and spurting out the first thing that comes to mind without doing a little researching or testing prevents others from looking into their own truth. I see a lot more people hating on Apple online than being "fanboys". If there is one "fanboy" on here for every 5 people who write Apple off with no justification... why do so many people support the haters post and not the "fanboy". I'm sure the fanboy at least owns several Apple products, I'd believe them over someone who just SAYS they own an Apple product and hate it (Why didn't you return it... or sell it? Something smells fishy). The mindset of calling someone a "fanboy" I believe adds to the prejudice of hating anyone who likes Apple. Not every Apple user is the stereotype you have in your mind.

Apples products are not garbage. A lot of R&D goes into them more than quite a few other products, and it used to be a company that only the elite artistic type could afford, but now that just about anybody could afford them, people seem to go crazy if one chooses that. I can't take Tek Syndicate seriously anymore (and no, it's not just them, and it's not anything about them as people or their personalities, it's the biased way he does videos like this: (It's just the freshest example in my mind because I came across the video again yesterday)

The reason I was drawn to LinusTechTips and it's community was the way they do their reviews. They will tell you the good and the bad. It's not "Let's just make a video to bash a product" that he doesn't even have sitting next to him!

I don't understand why people can't think that some of Apples products are good, and some are bad. If Apple didn't release the iPad and iPhone, we probably wouldn't (or at least not as soon as we did) get other tablets, and android, and kindles. Blackberry might still be the dominant phone on the market. Why didn't we hate blackberry users? And who is confident enough to say Blackberry is still the best and all other phones and environments are garbage?

I have not personally used the new Mac Pro, but I know nearly a dozen (only one person I know owns one) who use them at work and love them. I have built a comparable computer for under $3000, but it is WAY bigger, definitely not as stable, and right now there is so much heat in the home office that the CPU has been overheating, and it's not been waking. I had to have my watercooled cpu at factory clock, and now need to go from a midtower to a fulltower (my gtxs were added in the past month, and airflow is severely crimped) If he's making fun of people who spend $3000 on the Mac Pro, and they have $3000 to spend on other hardware, who cares? They're not being elitest, they are spending equal amounts. (By the way, as a pre-built solution like Apples, I haven't seen anything THAT good in specs, performance, reliability and I/O) I could run parallels on a mac pro and use all the autodesk software I want, or I could spend $3500 on a Dell solution for CAD/BIM like  http://www.dell.com/ca/business/p/precision-T3610-workstation/pd?oc=SMP3610W7P007CA&model_id=precision-T3610-workstation

    @Cazure

I can see you're becoming a little confused. Let me explain it step by step.

Each computer has a computer name and different user. I don't know how your computers and user accounts are configured so I'm going to use examples.

To find out the computer name, open Computer -> System Properties and you'll find the computer name listed there. (I'm sorry, I don't know what this is in Dutch)
To find out the username, open Command Prompt and type in
echo %username% and press enter. The username should appear.

    For this example:

Computer 1 will be called PC01
    Username: Home User
    Password: password1

Computer 2 will be called PC02
    Username: 3D User
    Password: password2

In your case, it sounds like you have different usernames and passwords on the two computers. This is what I have done.

When you connect from one computer to another, you need to enter the details in the following syntax (method):

Username: Name of the computer you want to connect to\username of that computer
    Password: password of that user

You need to be aware of the backslash. It is not a forward slash.

For example, I want to connect to PC02 using PC01. The username and password I will use is this:
    Username: PC02\3D User
    Password: password2

If I wanted to do the opposite and connect to PC01 using PC02, this is what I would enter:

    Username: PC01\Home User
    Password: password1

If you have any questions or are confused by what I'm saying, feel free to reply.

No, that's copper, which is just one type of metal. The braided cable in the picture is metal and it's not green. Some people need to get their eye's or monitor's fixed. Yes there is all kinds of crap on the cable, but that's from some outside source and 100% the fault of the owner. So is the breakage, owner mistreating the item, and not an actual issue with the product. The outer sleeve breaks like that from someone twisting the cable up too tight, or putting some other unreasonable strain on the cable. That flex point, where the sleeve transitions to the plug, is the weak point of every cable in existence.

I would've suggested getting the last 17" MBP they made.

Why? Cause this thing is still a verifiable tank. I upgraded to 16GB of RAM a while back, more recently I threw in two SSDs (not in RAID, not that needed in a laptop. One OS, one for Bootcamp/crap storage). The Quad Core in this still flies for most tasks and the 6770m hasn't really made me cry too much when I have to edit on the go.

For gaming? Macs are NOT the best value. But for you? since you have a very specific need. I know many a DJ who ended up having Macs whether due to existing ease of use or the software, so its a pretty valid reason to use one. I think if you don't need the latest and greatest however, a current Retinabook would be just fine, even the non-Retina 15" on refurb is still a good purchase.

You might as well wait till September/October since the entire line is due for a refresh, then make your decision from there.

And to people who feel a perverse need to turn every thread into "I'll give you 10 reasons why that Mac is overpriced and 10 laptops from other OEMs that are better". Just don't. Goons like you are why threads go downhill and lose relevance. Keep that shit to off topic or on threads that actually discuss it. OP clearly wants a Mac, leave him be. There is no need to crap on the thread with holier than thou asshattery on why a Mac is pointless. We got that the first couple hundred threads that were made about it.

Do we really need to derail any and every thread? The horse isn't even dead. It already got burned up and was used to make glue, you're still standing the same spot where it died beating a pile of dirt and horseshit thinking you're being clever.

macpro622776 reacted to xNeon in [Discussion] Is Xeon an actual platform to game/work on?
The current line of Xeons are based on the same architecture as the i7. The difference is usually that the Xeons are the cream of the crop. They run cooler and at lower voltages and are spec'd for 24/7 continuous usage. Otherwise, performance is usually identical. Xeons are able to be used in multi-socket motherboards, where i7s are not (which is why the Mac Pros use them).

Xeons are also usually the first to be updated. There are 6-core Xeons, but not i7s yet, though they are still based on the same architecture.

The additional reliability of the Xeons is very important in servers, especially rackmount and blade-enclosed servers where the lower heat dissipation and power consumption are essential. These benefits usually don't mean too much to all but the most extreme overclockers though, so people in the desktop segment usually ignore it due to the enormous difference in the price of both the CPU and the motherboards needed to support them.

If you are using this part for business, and you ABSOLUTELY need the reliability for things like running a sever or processing medical information then Xeon is for you. If you're gonna be editing videos for your school assignment or playing games, then i7 is the best choice. I chose an i7 because of the price and the fact that overclocking is fun and has a tangible benefit, especially in the short term.

macpro622776 got a reaction from KevinTYJ in What is your thoughts on the new os x yosemite?
I don't agree. Apple porting their exclusive, in-house products to other platforms is pretty much never going to happen. By continuing to offer it exclusively for iOS allows it to have full control over this which not only leads to better quality, but increased security. This is particularly important with the uses of Continuity.

For people who are saying "you can do this on this OS using this 3rd party utility", you can't compare like that because you are adding features that do not already exist in the OS. You aren't comparing operating systems. Your arguments are therefore rendered invalid.

How to end a never-ending argument
inspired by this post and the facebook status

Being a gamer, I understand how specs are really important when it comes to the performance of those specific types of applications.
But why are people so bothered about specs in Apple computers? Why do people feel the need to comment on everything about how
    shit Apple are?
I really want to know what people hate about Apple, but hold up and hear me out. Like I said before, I'm a gamer too. I have a reasonably powerful gaming machine that cost the same as my MacBook Pro which I use for- my work.
I'm a computer science student with a Mac. People look at me like I'm alien when I use it in lessons, and people are always complaining about the cost of Macs when I'm using mine in the universities Mac laboratories. People always say, "oh it's stupid how this works", "why can't I right click this is so retarded", "scrolling is backwards how stupid is that" but I don't hear complaints when people use Windows. In fact, people just rage in silence every time Windows crashes and applications freeze, and don't want to tell everyone about it. Why is that?

Please tell me. I really couldn't do my work as efficient without a Mac. Yeah there's something psychological about the price that motivates me to do a little more with my expensive hardware, but I just couldn't work without the precise trackpad and mouse tracking, poweruser-friendly keyboard shortcuts for everything and the ability to still use the rest of my computer when one application crashes.

Before you post, let me counter a few arguments you may have:

    Apple are overpriced!:
Are they? While you might see specs being the thing that costs the most in a system, I see rock solid stability, ease of use and exceptional design of the operating system itself justifying the cost.
People only use them to use Facebook!:
Not true in the slightest. I've never seen one of these coffee-shop hipsters in my life. I don't have an instagram account and my Mac friends that do certainly don't waste their precious battery life on instagram. Everyone I know that has a Mac has them for a reason. From programmers and freelancers, all the way to student clothing designers. My old school got them and the students have been doing really well in terms of art and music since, and I see their work all the time. And when we're not in work, we catch up on our social life like everyone else.
Mobile hardware in a desktop? Pah!:
Mobile hardware isn't bad hardware. It means it's incredibly power efficient. People don't understand that the reason Apple use mobile chips is because the general audience for a given price point don't need super-powerful hardware.
This reminds me of greasy and obnoxious sales people. You should buy this product, because it's faster. If only people asked themselves... will they ever use the full power of the machine?
Couple this with apples excellent design philosophy, and you get a piece of beautiful hardware, that has enough horsepower as one would need to ensure the machine meets thermal requirements and stays reliable in the process. Bingo. I want one.
      The Mac Pro is stupid!:
This has been busted by Linus himself. I will pay you $10 IF you can find a system that is built with workstation grade hardware designed to last a loooong time, features dual workstation GPUs, ECC Memory which MASSIVELY improves reliability, expandable as much and as fast as thunderbolt, and all fits inside a case that stays quiet, cool, and less than the volume of your (considerably smaller than usual) trashcan. and overall, is cheaper than the Mac Pro.

    Open discussion, lets go!
