Purchase suggestions for University-laptop
MaartenDG posted a topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Hi I am looking to buy a new notebook for university, there are a few requirements i need to follow. I want a good one for 4 years if I can. I only need it for school and not for gaming. Any suggestions are welcome! Requirements: Budget: +-900€ - 1250€ (about the same in USD) CPU: Intel i5, better or AMD equivalent (intel: 8th gen or higher) (at least quadcore) GPU: needs to support OpenGL, integrated graphics is fine (i'd rather invest in a better CPU) RAM: 16GB or more Screen: 14inch minimum, 15,... maximum Resolution: 1920x1080 or higer Ports: Atleast 1x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0 (or better) (both type A), HDMI, RJ45(1.0Gbps or more) Storage: 500GB nvme or more OS: Windows 10 Thanks for your help! Ps: Litteral translation of the university requirements: Industrial sciences: electronics-ICT The specifications below are intended as a guideline for the purchase of a notebook suitable for use in training. However, a purchase is highly subjective: portable, desktop replacement, budget, design, ... so we cannot recommend a particular brand or type. Keep in mind that you will use (or have to use) this notebook for at least 4 years and that you will carry it around in a backpack on a daily basis. So go for reliability. So preferably go for an A brand. Screen: The size of the screen in many cases also determines the weight of the notebook. If you go for a lightweight (<1.5 kg), then this will usually include a screen of 13 to 14 inches. At least a resolution of 1920x1080 so you can get enough on the screen (virtualization, software development). Higher resolutions give better readability, but usually also mean an additional cost. A 17" screen normally indicates that it is a so-called desktop replacement that is actually not intended to be continuously "dragged" back and forth. Keep in mind that a 15" in many cases still fits in a backpack, which is usually not the case with a 17". If you want the ergonomics of a desktop at home, an external screen and keyboard/mouse (USB) are the solution. In the EI labs there are external screens (FHD) available with an HDMI connection. Processor: Choose at least for an i5 processor (7th or 8th generation Intel or even more recent) or equivalent (for example AMD). The type number of a notebook CPU usually ends in the letter U e.g. i5 7...U or i5 8...U. Be sure to check that it is at least a quad core CPU. It should be possible to run multiple 64 bit virtual machines on top of your normal operating system (Intel VT x or AMD V configurable in bios + 64bit OS). Memory: Minimum 16GByte (or more). Rationale: In the lab, at some point you will have 4 other virtual machines running in addition to your host system, including 2 windows servers. Hard Drive: If you use the notebook only for education, 500GByte is sufficient, If you would also use it for private use, possibly choose a larger drive. Think also of an external hard disk (USB 3.0) as backup. Choose a full SSD drive! (SATA or M2). Solutions with hybrid disks, e.g. 128GB SSD + 500GB HDD are sometimes very slow in virtualization! Network connection: Wired: LAN 1 Gb/s (RJ45) (If not available, use a USB or Thunderbolt adapter). Wireless: 802.11n Operating System: All programs used in the training run under Windows 10. Since 64 bit virtual systems must be able to run, a 64 bit OS is a necessity. Connections: 2 x USB (at least 1xUSB 3.0) 1 x HDMI (possibly DP, VGA) 1 x RJ45 (possibly via adapter). Apple: If you opt for an Apple Macbook, please note that the training uses Windows Software. This makes it necessary to use a dual boot system OS X/Windows or virtualization software such as Parallels or VirtualBox (free). Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) -

PC unstable (BSOD's), powersupply adequate?
MaartenDG replied to MaartenDG's topic in Troubleshooting
Well, techradar says it consumes 220 watts so techniacally it should be able to run it fine i think, it is not overclocked or anything. https://www.techradar.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070#:~:text=The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 is also the only graphics, less than the RTX 3080. -
PC unstable (BSOD's), powersupply adequate?
MaartenDG replied to MaartenDG's topic in Troubleshooting
Well first it ran with integrated graphics because the 3070 was not jet delivered but then it also crashed but that could have been because the motherboard BIOS needed an update, i haven't tried integrated graphics since the update tho. -
Hi I have recently build a new pc but it keeps being unstable and crashing with BSOD's randomly. After research i found that my PSU is maybe not good enough. I already tried installing ALL drivers and updating as much as I can but it keeps crashing even with no other programs installed. Specs: Gigabyte Z490M i5 10600K with Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition RTX 3070Asus DUAL GeForce RTX 3070 16GB ram (2*8 corsair vengeance) Corsair TX650M V2 WD Blue SN550 500GB (WDS500G2B0C) I hope you guys can help me because i tried A LOT of things and nothing will work.

Hi there, Since it's Black Friday I thought it was a good idea to buy a 2nd monitor. My current monitor is an Acer XF240H, it has a 144Hz refreshrate, a 1ms response and it's a TN-panel. It is a good monitor for gaming but I would like a nice IPS or VA panel instead of a TN-panel, which I own now. I want a monitor that has a beautiful image so i have one "ugly fast" monitor, and one "beautifull slow" monitor. I would like for it to have a 4K resolution and a size of about 27 inches, the refreshrate doesn't really matter as long as it is 60Hz or more same a the response time it does not have to be great. My current (relevant) specifications of my desktop are: a i5 8600K (6*3,6GHz), 16GB 3200MHz RAM and a GTX1080 (MSI 8G). As I said, I want to use it for media consumption and a bit of 4K gaming (I have my Acer screen for the 1080p 144Hz gaming), so the quality of the image is the most important. Hopefully you can help me choose one because I want to know what other people (who now more of monitors than me) think of it. Here's a list: (they are all 4K, 27inch, 60Hz and 10-bit) (1€ is about 1,1$ as of now) Philips 276E8VJSB (+- 200€ (Belgium (or Netherlands), Europe)) LG 27UK650-W (+-375€) AOC U2777PQU (+-300€) AOC U2790PQU (+- 300€) LG 27UD59-W (+-275€) LG 27UL500-B (+-290€) If you have any suggestions, monitors that you already know are good, please let me know! Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies! I uninstalled all java on my pc and reinstalled Java 64bit and now the server starts with ""unlimited"" RAM as in i don't need the command to dedicate the RAM but the command still doesn't work so i'll figure that out and hopefully not break anything in the proces Thanks!!! edit: I don't know how it works since i can't find the java files but it works .

Hello I have a minecraft server but i can't allocate more than 1500MB Ram or so. Now that's not enough for 8 players. I think the issue is that my MC server is running on 32bit Java. My question is: how do i get it to run on 64 bit java? Thanks btw: this is my startup command in windows powershell (because cmd doesn't work ("could not acces jar file")) java -Xms512M -Xmx1200M -jar server.jar

Hi there I have a few questions about compatibility things with Corsair iCue and MSI mystic light and ASRock ASRRGBLED. I already know that MSI ML can control my Corsair strafe RGB keyboard, can iCue control the RGB on my msi 1080? Is my ASRock MOBO compatible with any other sofware for RGB control? It not super important but i'd like to sync everything if thats is possible it is a little OCD thing. RGB was never the priority in my build but i would be nice if i could sync my MOBO, GPU or both with iCue! Thanks!

Hi So i was planning to do an undervolt of my CPU (8600K), but when i checked the voltage with 'Open Harware Monitor' before undervolting i saw 0.400V. Is that possible knowing that the load on the CPU about 10% avg? Thanks in advance! Hi, I cleaned my pc today, but when I plugged in my monitor (acer xf240h ) with DP it would say "no signal". So I tried HDMI, same result, so I tried another monitor (iiyama) also same result. It worked fine before... My pc works fine as far as I can know because I can log in without needing to see the login screen. I can tell that i'm logged in bc my rgb keyboard has a different color combination before and after I log in. My fans are spinning rgb is lighting up and usb peripherals will "boot" I searched for solutions but I couldn't find any helpful, I've tried unplugging it, different monitor, different cable. I'm out of options thanks in advance.
