Time for me to assemble my Packard Bell and show it off today. Probably won't be showing pictures of it running though-my work bench is in my shed, and it gets very hot in there (plus the case seems to absorb all of the heat-making it even hotter again).

Say you're the kind of person who's interested (on professional level) in machine learning. You've got couple good options to run the really time-consuming training on cloud instances where one can spin up as many custom VMs as necessary. But, what if the stuff you're doing is something you really-really don't want/can't run outside "a box" that's either defined for you by employer or simply because it's something that You personally have time/money invested in and don't want leaving your infrastructure.

Yes, you can build a box, buy the hardware - but looking at the pricing of this AND taking into account you get support and validated platform.. I think this box is well worth the money. Actually it'll pay for itself in notime if you can "train your monkeys" fast enough. In scenarios where these kinds of workloads are involved which benefit from this specific hardware, you never have enough computing power

I feel for some android users though who get security updates months later or even not at all in some cases.... and i really wish it were not the case. one of the main reasons i don't use an android-based phone...

This is a bit concerning. The battery of the phone inflated possibly due to malware jacking up the CPU all the time. This is very similar to the past thread about websites embedding miners and they as well jack up your CPU usage.

AV company Sophos called this type of malware "parasitic" as they execute even without user consent.
So if your shiny Google Pixel 2 or new Samsung Galaxy Note 8 decides to thermal throttle all the time, chances are it's not your installed apps running in the background hogging resources but miners cranking up CPU usage. So imagine if a phone like the HTC One M9 with Snapdragon 810 got infected by a mining malware, it'll probably like a Galaxy Note 7 unless Linus cools it with ice while it's mining Monero or Bitcoin.
Kaspersky published an article detailing one of the examples of this mining malware and they named it "Trojan.AndroidOS.Loapi" or as they call "jack of all trades".
More details can be found in the Kaspersky article linked above. So just a tip for anyone with an Android phone who might encounter a mining malware, if it prompted you to uninstall your Android anti-virus, don't believe it but instead scan your phone with your AV but make sure to update it with the latest signatures. What's worrisome is that it exploits social engineering and many people fall for it even though it requires user intervention and it can potentially brick your Android phone. Looks like 2018 will be a year of much worse cybersecurity woes.

No word just yet on cryptomining malware on iOS but the mere fact that it's not an executable and just a script, I wouldn't be so surprised that iPhones and iPads will be the next target especially the fact that Apple's custom A11 Bionic SoC is much more powerful than the Snapdragon 835.

8uhbbhu8 reacted to Donut417 in Abysmal WiFi Speeds On 2.4GHz, Why?
Interference my friend. 2.4 Ghz is used by cordless phones, baby monitors, blue tooth, and transmitted by Microwave ovens, just to name a few. Keep in mind, due to its range, other networks in range can also interfere. This is the reason when people say "Im having issues with my WiFi speeds" the first thing we say is try 5Ghz, as you generally better speeds and reliability.

Download WiFi analyzer on your phone and check to see what networks are in the area. Also, make sure your router is no where near a microwave. Other than that, there is not much you can do.

GOod signal strength doesn't mean clean or accurate signal. Could be interference, could be the internal antennas, could be a burned out SMD component, could be heat. A million and one things.

Double check the settings and make sure the 2.4GHz band is set to do G+N and not just B.

Vigilante justice is best left in films like Mad Max, not in democratic society. That said, I won't hold my breath but I'd wager we find out something messy in all of this. He did used to be a lawyer for Verizon. If we were being honest about this, he shouldn't have been put in charge of the FCC for that reason alone.

Also, doxxing him isn't going to bring any harm to him or his family because no one is going to harm him physically. They'll likely just send him texts, tweets and emails. Knowing his age or date of birth or address... most of this was leaked on all of us already back when Equifax oopsed anyway.

Not a justification for this behavior, but... Ajit did vote against NN, 3 to 2. That does make him responsible for the ruling. That's how it works. His was the deciding vote and he did so un-apologetically. So technically, 3 people are responsible for the NN overturn. Not 50, not 100. 3.
