Apparently RX 480's can be flashed to RX 580's. It's the R9 290->390's all over again. xD AMD, I know you don't have the finances to come up with completely new GPU's every generation, but you need to do more than what you've done with in the past. Perhaps write the vBIOS for the new cards in such a way that they won't work in the old cards? Compatibility check?

    how do i do this?

Get the equivalent RX580 BIOS for your card from Techpowerup and use atiflash.

Oh, right. I forgot Techpowerup had them.

Back when the 300 series launched, I flashed my 290 to a 390 and saw marginal performance increase. It also made the card run hotter and well, with Hawaii chips, they run hot enough, lol. I suspect this will be like the 290/x vs 390/x flashing scenario, where you need to have a good chip for it to work successfully and run stable on a daily basis due to the slightly higher clocks and voltage differences. Some will work better than others. Regardless, this kind of hurts sales and shows how similar the cards are from the 400 to 500 series. I want AMD to do well. They knew about the 290 to 390 flashing and I'm sure they knew 480's could be flashed to 580's. I would have expected it would be fairly easy to write the BIOS such that it couldn't be flashed to the 400 series. But then, I don't really know enough to say if that's possible or not...

Yeah, they should've stayed in the 400 series and carry on with the "X" variant (470x and 480x), and keep the 500 series for the Vega architecture, that would've made more sense IMO.

The last digit is meant to be for revisions so it would be RX 485, etc.

Vega will only be high-end chips though. AMD is weird in how they do their GPUs each generation. Nvidia bases their entire line in each generation on the same architecture (Kepler, Maxwell, Pascal etc.) (for the most part). where as AMD has various architectures/chips among their lineup of the same generation (Tonga, Hawaii, Fiji etc.). It's kind of a double-edged sword. Allows them to focus on fewer GPUs at one time, but also forces them to re-use previous GPUs while working on another. They re-used Hawaii and Tonga while working on Polaris and now they are re-using Polaris while finalizing Vega. The cycle continues...

While it's silly to do this rebadge thing, could be worse. AMD isn't asking for more money for them, so what ever.

Yeah, I mean, I'm not complaining. Their cards still compete and are priced accordingly. Same as they did with the 300 series. They still perform well and their power consumption is well under control now. Many of the AIB's are also showing revised/improved PCB/cooler designs as well, so it's not like they are straight re-brands of the exact same cards.

It's sad at this point. Not because AMD does it, but that we don't hold AMD accountable. If the new 1060 with faster memory was called the 1160, people would grab pitchforks.

But yeah. I gave up hope and it really doesn't hurt anything.

Both companies are in different positions (financially and R&D wise). They both do things differently. Neither is the right or wrong way, IMO, just different. Nvidia tend to release new gen cards that perform strong right out of the gate. AMD's take time to mature. It's weird but it works for them and allows them to stay competitive. I don't think there's anything to hold AMD accountable for. They're doing the best they can with the resources they have. Ryzen is a success thus far, IMO, and that will go a long way to improving AMD's development cycle. Still, these things take time when you're limited like AMD is. If anyone expected the 500 series to not be re-brands, then they're only kidding themselves, given the grand-scheme of things.

Not really a matter of holding them accountable, poor word choice on my part. More a matter of a observation that Nvidia and Intel are attacked when AMD isn't. But you nailed it, AMD is seen as the little guy so people react differently.

I love the fact AMD has the 1600 and 1600x. I want AMD making some easy cash while rewarding the customers who research. Same thing with the 480 and 580. Though can we please get some competition up top? Pretty please?

Exactly. :) I really hope Vega puts on a better show against the 1080Ti/Titan xP, than the Fury X did against the 980Ti/Titan X... Realistically, I'm expecting a "trades blows" with comparable power consumption type of outcome.
