  1. Okay, so I am shopping for SSDs. I have a 2010 computer, so absolutely no NVME for me. I know that when buying HDDs, you go for high RPM and high capacity. What should I know about buying SATA SSDs?
  2. I record the prices of items I buy in PCPartPicker and for the last 3 years, and I have spent US$995.48 (probably more) on PC parts, spread across 3 different PCs. How much did you spend on PCs?
  3. I didn't see that on the first glance, good eyesight!
  4. 1 week ago, they said 4k is dumb 35 minutes ago, they were talking about the cheapest 4k monitor in Amazon... Somebody please explain
  5. Good idea, considering that it's Christmas in the next few months... Also, I'm thinking about giving the magnets away like candy this Halloween. Children like magnets ?
  6. Hello LTT! I am currently trying to wipe old drives before shipping them to a recycling center. I want to wipe nonfunctional HDD cheaply without any fancy tools. I tried to open one of them, mutilated the armature, ran them by plugging it into a broken HDD dock, so the disk spins, and scratched the platters with a screwdriver. Should this render the drive unreadable? Or do you think that the unscratched areas are somehow still readable?
  7. I bought 6 hard disk drives on eBay recently. I also bought a HDD dock so I can verify the integrity of each HDD. The HDD dock came in a poorly-packaged paper wrap, and I demanded the seller for a refund. I tested the HDD dock's electronics, and it worked good. When I verified the integrity of the drives, all but one failed to work. The seller does not accept returns. I am so unlucky.
  8. I found this graphics card solution, which says that it's a "remote graphics" card. What does it mean? Does that mean I can have a server with this graphics card, plug in my laptop, and run this graphics card? Does that mean my laptop/AIO can run Crysis at last?
  9. Haven't cooked anything yet Planning to use olive oil and cook some steak I'll remember that.
  10. Hello LTT community! I just want to tell you the story, and if you're too lazy to read, just read the title. I finally completed my DriveWiper™ (patent pending, jk) which will wipe drives I bought from the internet using Darik's boot and nuke. I successfully wiped 2 drives, one 2.5 and one 3.5, when I was going to wipe a third drive, which is identical with the second one. I booted the system up, which should start DBAN and wipe automatically, when unluckiness struck. The computer can't post, it just sort of turn the fans briefly then shut off, doing it indefinitely. I opened up the system, cleared the bios, and booted it up with open case. Next thing I saw was a red-hot transistor on board, smoking and burning. I immediately unplugged the system, and went to get the fire extinguisher. When I came back, the flame went out, good thing that I did not burn down my apartment. Curiously, my apartment's smoke alarm didn't went off, and I think I should tell my landlord about it. I might have inhaled some of the smoke from the flame, and I don't know if it will affect me. I ordered a similar motherboard and I wish it's just an isolated case. I don't even know if my HDD, or even the rest of the computer still works, and I don't have other means to test it, so my fingers are crossed. I might go 'light up' the bad board as well sometime, somewhere outside, I'll just let it burn, and see what happens. I might as well record it and put it to youtube! I will send an update soon, maybe next week, to show what will happen next! I hope I don't die!
  11. Just checked, I bought RAM with ECC... going to return it.
  12. Is there something special about mac RAM? Can I use mac RAM on PC? I remember what Apple did to Linus. Never forget.
  13. UPDATE: I returned the motherboard, said it is DOA. For some reason, that motherboard got fried... But at least I am not dropping hardware like it's hot.
  14. Gone through the checklist, no luck finding the problem
  15. Hello LTT Community! I just made a mini ITX build, and it works just fine when I booted it to BIOS for the first time. I turned it off, flashed a USB drive with Linux, and turned it on again... ...but the computer won't POST! What should I do? Is the mobo fried or something? Specs: CPU - Intel Pentium G2020 GPU - No discrete GPU RAM - 2 x 4GB DDR3 SODIMM (8GB total) PSU - HP HSTNN-HA09 150W power adapter MOBO - Intel DQ77KB Mini-ITX Symptoms: When power supply is connected, solid yellow LED lights up on the motherboard When power switch is pressed, fan turns on briefly, then turns off again. A blue LED flashes too. When I turned on the computer for the first time, I noticed both yellow and blue LEDs light up. The blue led, according to the manual, is the Intel management engine LED. Ideas?
