Yeah I tried it as well. It is very picky about what you run it on and how you run it. I would recommend against it as well.

With advancements I don't think it is needed as much as it was back in like 2017. It is more expensive to use helium so they have inventive to not use it when they can.
They were able to get better density with using helium due to the lower turbulence vs the air usage.
There was a blog article about it from western digital a while back.

I agree with @m9x3mos , the air version must be the newer version and faster version.
Less platters means higher data density which means faster data transfer (not that it matters much).

@leadeater Higher cooling capacity for helium is bullshit though (I mean if you consider everything this point doesn't make any sense even if it has some truth to it, which I doubt).

I did prefer Helium when I started on this post but the wiser choice might be Air.

The isn't a significant difference in reliability, not that you'd notice buying only a few HDDs.

The main reason for Helium filled HDDs is due to density and the number of platters so they choose a more stable gas composition that is also lower density than air. Being lower density means less turbulence is created from the rotating platters and moving read/write heads, lower turbulence means more air flow/movement so more cooling capability (more energy is transferred to the outer metal casing of the HDD).

If there is no need for Helium then they don't use it, filling an HDD with Helium that doesn't actually need it doesn't really provide any benefit.

This would be ideal for frequently changed files such as documents. For other generally write-once contents like photos and videos, 1~3 versions are acceptable.

I really love the coconut photo. I think the composition was well thought out with the heart in the background. On a side note, those Caramel Millionaire "Digestives" sounds more like a laxative than milk chocolate caramel.

From a couple years ago at an air show got me coming back to these photos after the latest Apple TV+ WW2 miniseries, Masters of the Air.
    Taken with a Canon 5DSr at ISO 320, f/16, 1/320 second.

Is there a particular reason you are putting this information in a rar file in the first place?

Generally with a backup I always keep it plain files, as if any part of that rar file becomes corrupt it can be hard or impossible to recover any of the contents.  Whereas if a few bits corrupt on a normal copy you lose maybe a file, or in the case of a jpeg it may barely be visible.

I'd at least run PAR2 on it and create some parity files so you have some potential to repair it if something goes wrong.

There's NO dictionary if you use STORE.  In STORE mode, there's no compression, think of the contents of the files put in archive as one stream of bytes, one file after another.

They usually just need to be the same size for RAID, but brand doesn't matter.

For me and a RAID or any type of relationship, like even a basic backup, I like to keep them the same.  That's my OCD though, not some actual rule that has to be adhered to.

If you're within the return period, talk to B&H.

If you're outside the return period but within the warranty period, talk to Seagate.

If you're out of warranty, talk to B&H or anywhere else that sells hard drives. 😉
