Hey, I'm new here, but I've been messing with X58 for the past few years, thought I'd introduce myself, currently running an X5660 at 4.2GHz (it's just a bad bin, my board is capable, my cpu is not capable of more than 4.2GHz without more than 1.45v) have a pair of X5670's in the post, hoping one is a good bin for around 4.6GHz+ but if not that just means I'll run 1.45v+ daily and just fall back on the second X5670 when i inevitably degrade the other, but here's what i scored with my X5660 and my vega 56, note the cpu voltage was around 1.6v for 4.6GHz, fine in short bursts but it hurts to shove that much voltage into the thing, but it's surprising what these 10 year old cpus can pump out: https://www.3dmark.com/fs/20015161

Well now both of my X58 builds have nvme drives lol, my home server has a nice SM951 to use instead of just a Team Group Lite 120gb sata drive. It's even better since it doesn't need to boot from it anyways. Unfortunately it turned the server into a blinking green/red christmas box but some tape or vicegrips should fix that next time I reboot it. Can't complain for $4.49 via amazon prime though.

I have a Xeon X5460 running perfectly stable at 4GHz on an Abit IP35-E.
Currently I'm testing the limits of a QX9650 on an Asus P5E-Deluxe. Right now it's at 4.1GHz and showing no signs of instability.... yet..

Before that, I've had a Q9550 at 3.8GHz on the Abit board. I sold it to a friend clocked at 3.6GHz and haven't heard back from him about it.

I realized I can do screen captures with my Atomos Ninja V, so I thought I'd try it out and show off my X5460 and GTX 780Ti trading blows in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

In villages with a lot of NPCs, framerates will drop to 20-30, strangely without CPU or GPU reaching 100%. Something else going on there.
In areas with actual gameplay, fps keeps between 40-70 for the most part, and it's a quite enjoyable experience

Hey guys, first time posting here, so let me know if I'm doing it right! This is the first in a series of cases I am building. While this one happens to be a SFFPC, the next few that I plan on doing will be a bit larger and for an mATX & ATX standard. The design is made out of 3/16" steel & fabricated entirely by me.

Why not just use SATA 2? I've never had issues using SATA 2 for my SSD boot drive, not really noticeable slower than SATA 3 in my experience. As far as booting from SSDs on PCIe cards, IDK. I know people can get 950 Evo/Pros to boot on a PCIe add in card, but those are NVMe drives, not a standard SATA.

Welp I plan to sell off my 2700X and other stuff and re-indulge my X58 Xeon addiction (apparently the SR-2 is Intel 5520 though, not technically X58):

$99 broken but basically new SR-2, hoping the seller just derped something and I can get it to work, if not I'll pull parts off it to freshen up the other one

It next to a rig in a Phanteks P350X (please excuse my messy desk and room, I've got a bunch of hardware in various stages of being prepped for sale)

Working SR-2, got this for $450 and it includes 2 quad core Xeons (the seller said he was able to hit 4.6GHz at 1.4v with HT disabled, 4.4Ghz at 1.325v with HT on)

And just ordered a brand new EVGA Classified board because I can't help myself

Also have (well one is still in the mail) two Cooler Master V6 GTs for the SR-2 rig. Will get a case and such as soon as I sell some other stuff to get the monies.

Original X58 owner here, still using it daily. Wish I found out about these Xeons years ago since my Nehalem was a total dud that eventually degraded below 3.8ghz. It's been a slowly evolving build since I bought it new. This is my everything build, it's been used heavily it's entire life and even seen a couple power supplies die in it and so many fans I've entirely lost count.

Here's what it resembles now, I suppose there's not a ton  left from the original build but it's become more of a used parts junk heap that still swings hard at any newer build.

So pretty much every upgrade in this thing was bought because it was dirt cheap, the X5675 was $25, half the 12gb of ram is $18 shipped worth of Samsung ECC 1333mhz. The 1080 was EVGA's $299.99 B-Stock deal for a Gaming SC non-LED, which for some reason has a SC2 backplate and LED's. Seasonic Focus+ 850w was $79.99 to replace a free 12 year old Toughpower 750w. The Corsair 450D was $46 on an Amazon Lightning deal. I paid $400-500 for 6gb of ram and the motherboard which I later found out there was a rev. 2 board for the same price that I should have been sent with better vrm. So after getting a dud of an i7-930 that only did 4ghz for a few days before never again posting at 4ghz, I've focused on nothing but getting deals for this thing.

When ram and video cards were really expensive, this thing really hurt feelings when I would tell people things like I have a spare cpu for this thing sitting in a bowl with my flash drives right after they dropped over $1000 on a build and got lower numbers compared to old stuff that's getting tossed out. I nearly went Ryzen but at $400-500, a $24 X5660 impulse buy made me fall in love with this thing again while matching and/or exceeding the hardware I was looking at.

    GA-X58A-UD5 (Rev.1)
    Xeon X5675(23x200@1.385v)
3x2gb Samsung ECC Unbuffered and 3x2gb G.Skill Pi Series (1600mhz@8-8-8-20-1T)
EVGA GTX 1080 Gaming SC(2000mhz(+0mhz) stock boost clock and +500mhz memory)

While I love this thing, the little nuances can be ridiculous. Like I had to patch in all new microcodes since Gigabyte only offered broken hexcore microcodes for this board revision and the Beta bios's are insanely unstable, require Windows 7 to be flashed and don't even have updated microcodes anyways. I still get some random restarts but they're insanely inconsistent which I wonder if at this point they might be power saving related which I'd rather keep and suffer a restart once a couple times a month. I've also found out that every fan header on the motherboard just runs fans at either 100%, 75% or 50% at random based on which header it is and only the CPU 4pin does PWM control despite having another 4pin. So I got a swiftech fan hub and went all Noctua since my NH-D14's 120mm fan survived 8 years of 100% while this motherboard has worn out at least 10 other 120mm fans in that same timespan.

Now I'm thinking I need a nice little workstation/server to stuff the spare X5660 into along with all my current spinning disks and put a large NVMe into this thing. Those black PCB 4GB 1866mhz Mac Pro memory sticks might also be calling my name if I do that. I'm hesitant though since if this thing decides it's lived long enough. The NVMe though would be an investment for a new platform if one was ever needed.

SO, I upgraded my cooling on my X5670 from an Evo212 with a Noctua fan to a Cooler master MasterLiquid 240 Lite. At the same Overclock, temps dropped from mid to high 80C's to Upper 50C's. That is around a 30C drop in temps! Amazing!

Quick question: Have 4 sticks of 1600 Dominator ram in there for 32 gigs of ram. I know I don't use it all, would it make any speed difference to take out one stick and go to 24 gigs of triple channel versus the dual channel I have now?

So.. Here's the X58-UD3R/W3680 system. This will be hooked up to my 1080p projector and the hifi in the livingroom.

It now has the 6x4GB Blue Dominator 1600 sticks, and tho the UD3R has two rear USB3 ports, I also added a PCIe card for two extra rear slots, and to be able to use the front I/O USB3.
The 1060 6GB (Coldzero.eu backplate) also ended up in this system, aswell as another topmounted exhaust fan.
I'm still tweaking the OC on this one with one eye on the watt-meter, as this will be put to good use from time to time. It's graduated with a 4.5GHz OC and 1000+ CB, so I think I'll settle for a bit less power consumption for now. 24GB is probably overkill, but hey, I can borrow 12GB if I stumble across another X58 board.

Note that the front panel is not fully clicked in place. It just rests on the top mounting hole. This actually makes a big enough difference for me to bother with it. Maybe I'll figure out some solution with magnets to keep it in place a bit better.

After getting my P55/X3440 sold, and setting up one of the X58-systems for sale, my good ol' P35/X5460-system got robbed of a few parts and went through a rough time just sitting on a shelf.
It kinda broke my heart, so I've picked up some brand new stuff for it.

New parts for the build is a Phanteks P300 White, Be Quiet System Power 9 600W Bronze, CM ML240L RGB and 2x Corsair AF120 White and a Phanteks LED strip. Total cost around $200.
It's a bit loud atm wIth the AF's spinning around 1200rpm, and the AIO-fans at 2000rpm under load, but the temps are awesome. A brand spanking new 4.1GHz overclock sees the hottest core max out at 72C (the other three cores 62C-65C) after consecutive CB-runs. (Score 446 btw). This with the fans mounted in pull-config with the pretty restrictive front panel of the P300.
    The 780Ti stays below 70C,
This little beast struggles on, still playing AAA games on it

WIll follow up with the evolution of my X58's. Know you guys love some build photos

As an X99 owner myself I think it‘s a bad situation on the used market.

The platform is very good in a vacuum. Very reliable because of 2 years of updates. Good performance for years to come, NvMe and DDR4. IPC on the CPUs is decent, similar to Ryzen.

But you won‘t find good deals most likely since the people who bought X99 paid a lot of money for it. 400-1000 bucks for the CPU and motherboards were expensive as well. So people are either just gonna keep using their stuff (like me) or are not willing to sell ultra cheap.

I honestly think the Ryzen 5 1600 and a good B350 or X370 board is the way to go right now if you want the most bang for the buck, great performance and a reliable system that will last you quite some time.

I also have a X58 PC I‘m happy with but wouldn‘t recommend it as a main system. While it‘s fun to tinker with and good if you REALLY can‘t afford to spend more it‘s getting a bit long in the tooth and compared to Ryzen it‘s still not that great of a deal, mostly because of the expensive X58 motherboards.

I wouldn‘t trust the Chinese knockoff X58 mobos on Ebay, because you never know if the 32nm Xeons (only reason for X58) work and you got no reputable manufacturer like Asus or Gigabyte to get BIOS updates or compatability lists from.

The AIO performance wasn't ALL that bad. But on this P35/X5460-system the CPU-temps have never been the issue really.
The problem I had was the GPU/VRM/NB-temps. That mod made a bigger difference for those parts than for the CPU iirc.
It's a different setup now in the P300. Different cooler, fan speeds, voltages etc, so I can't really draw any conclusions.

Today, I would make the same mod again, but for 2x 140mm, without the gap.
