  1. I've had troubles getting past the 3000mhz mark. Really I don't think the performance difference will matter all that much. My issue is that right now when I run AAE with just a few effects it pins my RAM usage to 98% so, right now I think it's less of a speed issue and more a capacity issue.
  2. I'm not sure. I am pretty new to overclocking in general and I really haven't spent much time researching the subject yet.
  3. A couple months ago I decided I needed to actually build my fist gaming PC. Previously I was using a terrible laptop. This is the current config: CPU: Ryzen 7 1800x GPU: nVidia GeForce GTX 1080 RAM: Ballistix Elite 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4 Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty X370 Gaming K4 Case: NZXT S340 PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W Fully Modular Wireless NIC: Edimax - EW-7822PIC CPU Cooler: Deepcool Captain 240 EX Storage: Boot Drive: Intel 530 Series M.2 SSD 80 Gb Games Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 240 Gb x2 Main Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1Tb Archive/Backups: Western Digital WD Red NAS Drive 3Tb x2 Right now I use the computer for both gaming and light video creation with adobe after affects. The only bottleneck that I have noticed so far it the RAM. I plan to upgrade to 32 Gb of Trident Z in the next month or so. Is there anything else I should upgrade or consider getting?
  4. When it comes up with the blue screen it should display an error code. What is it?
  5. At the beginning of the month I decided I needed to actually build my fist gaming PC. Previously I was using a terrible laptop. All I want to do with this blog post is get some thoughts on my config. CPU: Ryzen 7 1800x GPU: nVidia GeForce GTX 1080 RAM: Basilisx Elite 8 Gb (2x4) Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty X370 Gaming K4 Case: NZXT S340 PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W Fully Modular Wireless NIC: Edimax - EW-7822PIC CPU Cooler: Deepcool Captain 240 EX Storage: Boot Drive: Intel - 530 Series 80GB Games Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 250GB x2 Main Storage: Seagate - BarraCuda 1TB Archive/Backups: Western Digital - Red 3TB x2
  6. Sorry to get back to you sooooo late. Basically the BIOS is the instruction set that lets your components speak to each other. If the BIOS and motherboard are too old it won't speak the right language to let them communicate.
  7. I don't know what kind of cooling solution you have but, one of the important things to watch out for is your temps getting too high. Anything below 85 degrees c is safe with optimal being about 75. Other than that just make sure you don't slam your CPU with too many volts and you should be alright. After you boot into the OS after applying the OC make sure to run something like Cinebench R15 to do a quick stability check and if the system passes that, do a test for like an hour or two using a torture test like Prime 95.
  8. This argument about RAM amuses me. There are no significant performance differences (while gaming) between 8gb and 16gb or even 32gb of RAM. I will agree that 8gb is really pushing it as far as trying to do any kind of workstation work but, if you're building a legitimate workstation you will have the budget to get at LEAST 32gb of RAM if not more. My current build only has 8gb RAM and I can still play games, listen to spotify, encode hifi audio and, have RAM to spare. But if you want to do real work and multitasking you are going to need more RAM. It's all about what you intend to do with the system and what your budget is.

    My Setup

I would DEFINITELY look into Ryzen it offers so much at an awesome price. I just finished a build for not too much more than what yours is priced at (minus the monitor) https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ssPf3F If you went with a Ryzen 5 instead of a Ryzen 7 like I did you could save some money and you don't have to get a 1080 either a 1070 or a 1070ti are awesome for 1080p gaming as well. Everything else about your build looks like a soild choice and as is would be great. I just know you can squeeze more peformance out of your budget.
  10. I have an EVGA superNova G2 550w and it works really well but, going with a higher wattage than you need is better because it puts your power usage into a range that is more efficient for the power supply to handle. And as far as CPU and/or Motherboard upgrades go, what all do you use the computer for? Just light gaming or do you do any work with it as well? Because you can get FX-4100 for around $60 and that would be a huge improvement as far a clock speed is concerned. And since games don't benefit from having a 6-core processor having better clock speeds and lower cores would be a definite improvement. Not to mention it would give you a WAY better upgrade path than just limiting yourself to a 1050ti. I'm not sure that your current motherboard would support it as far as BIOS revisions and whatnot but, I would at least look into it.
  11. I am going to use the LTT Forums to log my growth as a PC enthusiast and learn more about computer hardware. This is my first profile post and I hope to write here daily.

  12. Sounds good! I'll give it a try tomorrow and post my results. Thanks for the suggestions.
  13. Yeah I originally had an air cooler on the system but, at 1.4v it was starting to get into the upper 80s. That's why I got the AIO and so far with the multi hour stress tests I've peaked around the upper 60s to the low 70s but, I'm going to try lowering the voltage just a bit. Do you know of any good resources for learning how to overclock RAM?
  14. Yeah keep us updated. If it does work I guess it goes back to either a bad GPU or bad PSU. Is the PSU making any abnormal noise or getting hot?
