  1. In the mobile phone world, everyones focussed on how much bezel a phone has, the thinner the better etc. And lesser so in the laptop world... However I want to discuss what MacBook owners think about the bezel (if you can call it that) or the space between where the keyboard ends (left and right) and the edges of the laptop. I have both the Macbook 12 and MacBook Pro 13 and personally I prefer the edge-to-edge design of the Macbook 12 keyboard. It just looks slicker when compared the MacBook Pros with the grill on either side. Granted, the grill on either side of the pro keyboards does look damm good, but again I prefer the tighter edge-to-edge layout on the Pros I had hoped that when Apple re-released the air, that it would be in the style of the Macbook 12 keyboard just bigger. Instead they went with the grills either side of the keyboard like the pros. Im also hoping that with the new releases this year, that they go with the edge-to-edge design on the pros... here's hoping ? Discuss...
  2. Hmmm interesting, will look into Markdown... thanks for taking the time with an extended reply ?
  3. As the titles suggests am looking for peoples opinions / experiences with some kind of help / guide writing application. To expand I work for a company who has 150+ software / web based products which are administered by myself and colleagues. We have the usual word documents with bullet points, numbered steps etc containing information on administering each product, screenshots etc. However working with word documents and the like is troublesome to both maintain and use, especially if they are 30-40 pages long! Im not sure what exactly it is I am looking for hence the post for suggestions. Ideally a package which is specifically designed for such a task... ie the creation of help guides / instruction manuals as it were. The end "guides" would need to be searchable and easy to navigate... perhaps via a screen by screen interface which would contain step1 on one screen, then step2 on the next screen etc etc Answers on a postcard ?
  4. Yeah but then moving it to the left of the screen just chews up real estate horizontally instead of vertically The hide option is the best solution to be honest until someone comes up with a terminal hack ?
  5. So here's the question... When you full screen an application, in macOS it hides the doc at the bottom and the menu bar at the top However if you have an application (for example safari) running in a non full screen window, the dock prevents you from resizing the window right to the bottom as illustrated below... dock uses the bottom section of the screen However, I want to have the dock not foceabnly take up that extra space at the bottom like the picture below (this was achieved by turning on the auto hide dock, resizing the browser to the bottom of the screen and then turning the auto hide option off) This is what I want to happen, ie the dock to be transparent over an application using all of the screen I realise that this may sound petty, but its a preference one would like to have ? Yes, you can use all available space by either having auto-hide turned on, or full screening the app, but was curious if there was a terminal command to allow the dock to overlay any running applications and not reserve the bottom section of the screen?
  6. Ok maybe the title of this post is a bit click-batey but bear with ? From my early teens (I'm in my 40's now) have always been an amateur hobbyist. Back then, was into CB Radio's, stereos, speakers, games consoles, mini tv's...you know ya typical 80's / 90's teenager I remember when my grandma used to take me shopping to the local outdoor markets, and always used to gravitate to the stalls selling power adaptors ,audio cables, coax adapters etc etc Funny thing though, even now in my 40's whenever I'm in a store or supermarket, I always gravitate to the section which sells wires, plugs, adapters etc. There will be some nostalgia mixed in here, but again, even if I don't need a new USB hub, or charger or HDMI cable, I always find myself in this section poking around nevertheless! Is this just me or does anyone else have a "fetish'" for wires and generic peripherals? ? PS - I have a humongous wires box in the garage stuffed with peripherals and wires... some of them going back 30 yrs!
  7. Am glad it wasn't just me then! I find myself looking for the most complicated fix sometimes, and ignoring the fact that its the most basic of troubleshooting which should be done first! There was a guy over in another sub forum who lost his wireless access after a windows update... a simple cold restart brought It back! Sometimes the old adage of a bit of spit n polish wins out ?
  8. Hours of stressing, re installs, factory wipes, vanilla installations, software updates, iPhone forum scouring ... ... Only to strike fixit gold with something a tad low tech! 12 year old daughters iphone 7 plus wouldn't charge at all or sync with pc, only to realise the lightening port needed a good scrub! #iphone #charging #toothbrush
  9. I personally grew up with MS Windows from the early days of 3.0,3.1 all the way through to Win10 Switched to macOS via macbook laptops several years ago, as my tweaking and hobbyist days are behind me now. I work from home several days a week, mostly with Citrix, RACF products, VDI's etc As most of my work is connecting to other systems either web based, RDP or virtualised, I prefer the macOS environment due to its effortless touchpad gestures, beautiful hi-res scaling (windows doesn't scale hi-rez displays half as well as macOS) and easy swiping between different desktops / screens For the hobbyst I agree windows is hands down more tweak-able, however products like Parallels emulate windows and other os's effortlessly on a Mac. The oriingal poster was a tad fan boyish in their views of the apple world, however I personally lean towards a more balanced approach regarding ones computing requirements... ...as others have said, why limit yourself to one OS when you can have several and reap the benefits each has to offer ?
  10. I hated it when I first saw it, however switching to light mode was too light. I discovered this terminal workaround to get the best of both wolds ? ...Dark Menu Bar only like it was in High Sierra https://www.tekrevue.com/tip/only-dark-menu-bar-dock-mojave/ ONdefaults write -g NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance -bool YesOFF (Full Dark)defaults write -g NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance -bool No If you choose to use this hack, just make sure you have switched to light mode before you run the terminal command, otherwise it screws up some app colouring. Log off and on again after you have run the command
  11. Good discussion so far peeps ? and yeah, I kinda like to fill my screen with apps, takes me back to Windows 3.1 days ? For the observant of you, I used to be a die-hard HTC fan, as they kicked off the lovely quality metal casing with the likes of HTC DESIRE HD etc (love the htc flip clock) I digress though, even if apple released a few more options to make the icons a tad smaller, add more to the tray etc.
  12. Ok here goes...I've been both an iPhone user and android user over the years, and recently have started to think that IOS is just looking so friggin outdated!Recently purchased a red iPhone 7 plus and started to get angry almost immediately.Granted iOS is a slick and polished OS functionality wise, but visually the chunky ass icons both at the bottom and for apps, are well just that...chunky ass friggin icons!Hell you can't even add more than x4 icons to the bottom bar!Anyone else agree with my Ranty Poo™ concerning crusty old visual iOS? IOS & ANDROID Side By Side
  13. Had a friend test the power supply with an oscilloscope and it was not outputting enough power... replaced the power supply and back in business ?
  14. Have had the unit in constant use for just over 3 years inside a cupboard with zero faults until today. ____________________________ Noticed the NAS had powered down so attempted to power on again... nothing Removed the power supply and re-inserted and attempted to power on - nothing Removed the drives from the bay and re-attempted to power on - nothing Left the power supply removed from the NAS for several hours and re-inserted and attempted to power on - nothing ____________________________ I know it's not a problem with the plug / power supply itself as on re-inserting the power cord, and pressing the power button, the unit powers for perhaps a second, and the fan starts again for a second before powering off. Have raised a ticket with synology themelves and am waiting for their repsonse Anyone else seen this problem with this or a similar model? Any suggestions of what could have failed?
  15. When you say the wifi wont connect when running High Sierra, can you expand on this? You attempt to connect and then what? Error message? If so, can you post a screenshot? You should see the option to run troubleshooting when the connection fails, have you done this? Is it just failing on your home wifi network or on all wifi connection when under High Sierra? Have you attempted to connect to a neighbours wifi or perhaps to a tethered mobile phone wifi hotspot?
  16. Have a copy of OS X 10.10 Yosemite I backed up a while ago, if you want this can upload to dropbox or something?
  17. Why or why didn't Apple provide a show desktop / minimise all function in macOS! Sure you can "show your desktop" with F3 but then that sux as a lot of the time, I want to make adjustments to stuff on the desktop without it pinging back to where I left off.... enter Show My Desktop... total godesend! https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/show-my-desktop/id1155368370?mt=12
  18. You could apply the same question to pretty much any complicated system Take for example a car... you would have to mine your own raw materials, then figure out how to create glass, rubber, metal etc Still an interesting thought process :-)
  19. What with the recently announced dark mode in the soon to be released macOS Mojave, it seems that everyone is jumping on the #darkmode bandwagon!
  20. Update: The glitches were getting progressively worse in all games... So we contacted the store where we purchased from and they said they had had a lot of returns for the same problem... Apparently the 1st gen controllers suffered a lot with glitches. The staff just handed over a second gen brand new pair of controllers and job done.. One happy daughter ?
  21. For anyone who is an avid youtube consumer, more often than not, the sponsors of videos is dbrand. I caved to the pressure the other day and purchased one for the MacBook and a suite of skins for my daughters Nintendo Switch. Took about a week or so to arrive from Canada --> UK ...and was impressed that the package hadn't being bent or crumpled Very impressed with the results on the MacBook! Anyone else skin their Mac? Pictures? :-) Unknown
  22. My daughter recently got Mario 8 deluxe for her switch and started complaining that occasionally the racer would slow down. On closer inspection she was correct and on letting go of acceleration the racer would then reverse automatically! OBSEERVATIONS Only happening when using the native switch controllers either docked or undocked Doesn't happen when using a pro controller for example Enabling airplane mode has no effect, still glitches TROUBLESHOOTING Restarted the switch Powered off and on the switch Re-calibrated the. controllers Activated airplane mode Installed latest switch software update Installed latest game update We noted when re-calibration the controller that on releasing the directional control stick, that the dot wouldn't always return to centre After the controller re-calibration the glitch would not rear its head, but after extended gameplay would start slowing / auto reversing Its a hard problem to track down to be honest, as it could be... Faulty controllers Faulty device itself Interference from wifi, other bluetooth devices etc Am considering contacting Nintendo and getting either replacement controllers or a complete replacement under warranty, but not before some good old fashioned research / troubleshooting.
