  1. Im a virgin media ISP user on a fibre internet connection here in the UK Have the latest Virgin Media Superb 3.0 at home connected to Virgins VIVID 350 offering and am very happy with the performance of this. Currently the only devices which are plugged into the ethernet ports on the superhub router, are a Synology NAS, a TIVO box and an Amazon Fire TV However my question is one of load sharing... I dug out a Network Switch (NETGEAR GS105 ProSafe 5-port) and was curious to ascertain if I daisy chain this into the superhub and then transfer the NAS and FIRETV into the netgear switch, whether or not I would experience a performance gain? The NAS is used heavily to stream HD content from its hard drives to the FIRETV running PLEX and KODI Considering that both the superhub and netgear have gigabit ethernet speeds, my train of thought was that as most of the high volume traffic is flowing between the NAS and the FIRETV, transferring the x2 devices to the network switch should ease the load on the superhub which primary use is 7 or 8 devices connected to the 5ghz wifi. Whats hurting my head though, is would the netgear switch take care of the heavy lifting with traffic between the NAS and FIRETV or would I have to make some changes on the superhub to make sure this is the case? Im not a networking expert by a long stretch (hence the forum thread) To recap on my questions... Would plugging the NAS and FIRETV directly into the switch improve wired performance? Does one need to make any config changes on the isp provided superhub to insure that traffic between these x2 devices is handled by the netgear switch? Any changes needed to the network config of the NAS? Perhaps use a different subnet on the netgear switch?
  2. As the title, is it possible to answer an incoming call on someones other than your own iPhone XS? For example, my misses is an agency nurse and receives calls from several agencies throughout the day. However there are occasions when she's in the shower and an agency is calling... can I physically answer said call without the Face ID and or passcode? Obviously if not, then she will need to tell me her passcode (evil laugh)
  3. @SansVarnic why the move to off topic? ln my mind it is a tech discussion... Browsers are "tech" are they not?
  4. Lol yeah kinda the same thing. There is however variables to this rule though... I only do this on a machine with SSD disks and or plenty of memory. I wouldn't do this at work as my pc has a standard hard disk and not much memory.. takes too many seconds to re-open the browser ?
  5. ... or does anyone else prefer to close and re open their Web browser rather than re use the open tabs for another site? I personally angrily close my browser if there's several open! Just feels like a fresh shiny browser rather than the dirty hoe full of open tabs! Re using tabs just makes me feel like am splashing into a nasty tart! ?
  6. How does one reply to this post? You've posted links to youtube videos and screenshots? What are you struggling with? Installing Win7 is allowed in High Sierra https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204048 How are you attempting to install windows 7? Bootcamp allows you to install from an ISO image of the operating system or creates a bootable usb drive from an ISO image. Have you physically got an ISO image of windows 7?
  7. Love the main free wifi players here in the UK... thecloud.net https://www.o2.co.uk/connectivity/free-wifi Instant connection when you whip out your kit... What free wifi offerings are available in other countries which offer really good coverage and performance / ease of use?
  8. Not at all ? Its a topic which up until today I knew very little about... so thanks for the enlightenment ?
  9. I didn't realise no ? And you're right, the majority of home interwebz users wouldn't give too hoots about remote access.
  10. Im with Virgin Media in the uk, and I don't believe they have rolled out such a travesty! I have no probs port forwarding to my home network. Was kinda hoping for a discussion on the topic though... ?
  11. Carrier-grade NAT Discussion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier-grade_NAT Was in a reddit discussion for the last couple of days and couldn't figure out why this guy couldn't access his game server remotely. Then someone replied with "Carrier-grade NAT" Never heard of this process until today and a quick read of the WIKI and this has made me angry! Granted there's the whole "boo hoo hoo the worlds running out of IPv4 addresses" but ISP's employing this kind of evil voodoo on their customers COME ON!! Venting aside though, what are the alternatives for ISPs? For users who are strangled with this nonsense via their ISP is their any workarounds? Let the discussions begin ?
  12. Some good points... this is why I posted this, to kick off discussions. Will admit though, that from the advertising it highlights simple a hell of a lot... and to my detriment, I should have realised that this product wasn't designed for advanced users.... I just wrongly presumed that because google had released it, there would be all the usual bells and whistles
  13. Nice! You've actually summed up what I was trying to say ? Thats my mistake I guess, in buying just one and hoping for comparable performance. If you're looking at it purely from a price point though, then as you said, there are more beefy products out there for the same price point of a single google unit. We only need wifi in the house, which covers x3 floors, and have our existing router in the middle of the house, which serves our needs well. I think this is a learning experience to be honest, considering our needs... ...again we don't need a mesh solution and in doing doing so would just be cash wasteful... again considering our requirements
  14. Interesting concerning the BT offering... good price? I realise that mileage can vary with wifi hubs in general, and they're a lot of variables at play, for example the physical placement of the thing. My main rant was to highlight that this particular google device in the same location as my previous router suffers from poor performance full stop. I almost think that's Googles plan, to milk users for more money by purchasing additional mesh hubs just to get comparable performance!
  15. Google Wifi - Mesh Wi-Fi Router Discussion / Rant Picked up the x1 pack version yesterday, as a potential replacement for my now faulty Apple AirPort Extreme router All of the reviews I had read were glowing concerning this google router and had high expectations during installation. Boy were my expectations shattered! I think the best way to describe my disappointment in this product is by bullet points... Although the setup was straight forward, the lack of web interface config is highly annoying. One has to download either an android or iOS app just to configure it All the talk about auto performance adjustment and monitoring is for nothing, as I quickly realised that although it supports 2.4ghz and 5ghz, its auto-switching with no way to separate the frequencies. In other words, if the device decides that your too far away from the router, then tough your getting 2.4ghz Performance was good at close range, however going into a different room or floor and the device refused to auto-switch to 5ghz even if you chose the priority device option. We are talking big difference... tested in my downstairs office and couldn't get speeds above 20-30 mbps. My Apple Airport even my ISP router offered up in excess of 350 mbps in the downstairs office! The thing has only x2 network ports and the 1st one is taken up by plugging in the cable from your internet router / modem! This google router has a fair number of good points, but are overshadowed by the poor network / wifi performance from a single device. Granted, this is a mesh wifi device, however spending £100's extra on additional hubs just to get better coverage and potentially performance is not justifiable, especially since even my ISP provided router (Virgin Media Superhub 3.0) provides the same performance as my existing Airport router in different rooms / floors. I will admit, the functionality to configure the device from an app was kinda cool if not useful and other family granular controls again were well implemented. In conclusion though, for anyone who wants overall WIFI performance / throughput over convenience and gimmicky controls... LOOK ELSEWHERE!
  16. I had a similar problem with my NAS a while back... pressing the power button, you would see the light, then the fans would turn for perhaps 1-2 seconds then nothing... Turned out to be the physical external power supply which had gone caput. You may want to try another power supply, at least it will rule off another source of the problem if not...
  17. Well here's a twist! Was thinking about this issue with regard to my own reason for booting High Sierra, because modern browsers, Chome, Opera and Safari no longer support plugins, which was giving me grief launching Citrix Workspace from a Citrix link in Mojave... I discovered Maxthon browser http://www.maxthon.com Holy sh*t... navigated to the Citrix site which only worked within Safari 11 which allows plugins and boom... it launched the Citrix Workspace app!!!!!! and within Mojave! So stoked ?
  18. I actually dual boot my machines and use Mojave as my daily driver unless I'm going to be spending the day working with citrix... To be honest I wish citrix would release a better client to get around this!
  19. As the title suggests, anyone had a reason (or desire) to downgrade / dual boot to High Sierra? I work from home a lot myself and use MacBooks to conduct my work. After Apple upgraded the plugin security requirements in Safari 12, and as a result busted the Citrix plugin In a nutshell even with the latest Citrix Receiver (workspace) client, you can't launch certain Citrix sessions in the native client on Safari 12 / Mojave https://www.citrix.com/blogs/2018/08/03/npapi-support-is-being-removed-from-safari-12/ Basically I had to install High Sierra on my machines as a workaround for this and prevent automatic updates so the browser version was kept at 11 But back on topic, again... does anyone else have a requirement / need / desire to keep running High Sierra?
  20. True, true, true! But.... I like Big Buts And I cannot... wait another discussion for another poast Lets not focus on just the internet, this is becoming more of a social / governmental norm to just ban stuff when it gets scary or corrupted! For example, Kids / minors were getting really ill on buying too many high caffeine drinks in this country.. governments reaction... make it illegal for them to buy said drinks! Educate those directly or indirectly effected by any perversion of something... don't just ban it! We as kids would get our wrists slapped if we dare reach up to the top shelf of a newsagents magazine rack, where all the titty mags were! We were educated about it, the government didn't ban titty mags from being stocked!
  21. Exactly! Youtube are worried about either receiving fines from regulatory government knee jerk reactions or upsetting their youtube superstars from loosing money! Also as my original comments, what's next, companies /governments blocking adults from going into toyshops incase there is peedos planning on grooming kids!
  22. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-47408969WTF Google!Once again its the minority "groups" ruining it for everyone else!Whats next, facebook banning all commenting on photos / videos of kids?! ?Obviously they will be using facial recognition and advanced algorithms to calculate which videos contain minors... however how will this detect videos such as archived footage going back several decades. For example I upload a video of myself as a child (80's child ) running around on a beach whilst on holiday ... will that commenting be disabled for featuring a child?Or how about artists like Aled Jones... he has just released music albums of him singing in duet with himself as a child... and I've seen video compilations on youtube of him as a child as well.Or Michael Jackson singing as a child on youtube... how will the algorithms cope with that!!!!! ---------------------------------------- Granted... there are is a lot of COMMENT guff in the majority of mainstream content so trolls won't be too pleased either! My problem is the whole blanket ban approach.. this kind of approach never ends well... and it sets a president for other companies I use Facebook for example to share video content of my child with grandparents and family members, some of which live thousands of miles away.. Again my problem with this blanket approach is that other media companies like Facebook will more than likely repeat this approach on their own platforms and all of a sudden can't comment on family stuff! Some further examples...High Street Bookstores...here in the UK we have Waterstones... a large retail chain who's primary product is books. If this blanket ban mentality continues either as a direct decision by the retailers themselves or as a mandate by Government, then in this example, the children sections of these stores which are decorated to attract and please children, suddenly became a no go zone enforced by staff for adults! The mentality would be that there is a possibility of Peadophiles hanging out in this section of the store, running the risk of attempting to offer the children sweeties and puppy dogs! AKA blanket ban of ALL adults entering the children area of Waterstones bookshops!LucozadeThis is now a product which has received a blanket ban to children converselyBecause of its high caffeine and sugar content, minors are legally restricted from purchasing this and similar products. Let's say Im out for the count with flu symptons and I need my 11year old child to head to the local shop to buy me some. Nope, the government have blanket banned minors from purchasing "energy drinks" because of a small amount of incidents where minors have either died or come to severe harm because of these products. What happened to educating children? Be-it in the home or in school (or both).Or look at China and the almost complete ban of all but government sanctioned website and internet products.BLANKET BANS = NANNY STATE PEOPLE!Why should companies like google or governments forcing them, try and protect the public from harm? When it comes to children, its education / education / education all the way.
